Basil Paterson Edinburgh is proud to have beenhelping learners achieve their goals for over 90years. We remain as dedicated to empoweringstudents through their studies as all those yearsago.

Located in the heart of Edinburgh's historic NewTown, Basil Paterson Edinburgh provides a uniqueacademic environment where internationalstudents learn under the same roof as localstudents studying for UK qualifications as well astrainees taking the Cambridge CELTA course.

Qualified and enthusiastic teaching staff workhard to ensure the highest level of academicsupport is provided while also challengingstudents to progress and take ownership of theirown learning. We believe learning involves muchmore than is taught in the classroom, so wecomplement the work done in class with a variedsocial and cultural programme.

As the largest open test centre in Scotland forIELTS and Cambridge Examinations, we are bestplaced to guide learners through the exampreparation process. Studying at Basil PatersonEdinburgh allows students to be familiar with theenvironment in which they will take their finalexam.

The History of Basil Paterson When Basil Paterson founded the school back in1929, he believed that learning should be morepersonally tailored and should keep the learner atthe heart of it. These views still play a big part informing our ethos and approach today.

Basil Paterson was born in India as his father wasa minister there. The family returned to Scotlandwhen Basil was a child and he was brought up inEdinburgh. At 25 he travelled to London where hetook up a post as an Instructor at GreenwichNaval College. It would appear that he enjoyedthis foray into education as on his return toEdinburgh a few years later, he set up his firstschool which was based around five minutes walkfrom where the school stands today.

Our building also has an interesting history havingbeen built in the 1700s by John and JamesWilliamson. The Williamson brothers would go onto travel to the USA where they were involved inthe building of The White House. Experts havetold us that there are a number of similarities inthe internal design. The famous connection wascommemorated in 2018 when a plaque wasunveiled outside Basil Paterson Edinburgh tocelebrate the link.

Students are also expected toselfassess regularly, evaluating their ownprogress in relation to their goals. This is furthersupported by students being invited for anindividual coaching session each Friday. Thesesessions provide learners with an opportunity todiscuss their own progress and to set achievablegoals for selfstudy.
