"The quest for leadership is primarilyan inner journey to discover our true

    selves, which include our strengths,

skills, prejudices, and talents, and arecognition of our unique giftsand

    some of our limitations,"

    (Matusak, 1997)

"We say we want effective leadership,

    but Hitler was effective. Criteria

beyondeffectiveness are needed.Ultimately, we judge our leaders in the

    framework of values," (Gardner)

    Core Personality

    Accumulation of enduringphysical & mental

    attributes

Result from the interaction of heredity &

    environmental factors

All too often, leaders are blind to the obvious

when it comes to something of critical

importance to them their own personality.

    Values

Values are the social principles, goals, orstandards held or accepted by an individual class, society, etc. (Websters dictionary)

Values are a broad tendency to prefer certainstates of affairs over others (Geert Hofstede"Culture's Consequences")

The principles we seek to live in accordance with.

Essential and enduring beliefs and principles notto be compromised for short-term gain orexpediency. (Collins and Porras "Built to Last")

    Principles vs Practices

Practices are the whatto do's- specific

    applications that fit specific circumstances.

Principles are the whyto do's- the elements

upon which applications or practices are built

    "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day;

teach him how to fish and you feed him for a

    lifetime."

Be a light, not a shadow.

    Some examples of shadows

Insecurity - we identify ourselves with the

external, such as institutional identity or a

    specific cultural role

Misperception- life is a battleground i.e. "wins

and losses," "do or die" tactics, and "allies and

    enemies.

Fear - fear of the natural chaos of life, of

    negative evaluation, of public failure

    Interpersonal trust

Trustworthiness is the foundation of trust

Why is trust important for effective

    leadership?

Outcomes of trust in a relationship are clear

    communication, empathy, synergy, and

    productive interdependency.

    Circle of Influence

    revolves around trust

    low trust= high control

high trust= low control with high trust, you don't have to supervise

    because followers supervise themselves

circle of influence grows as we build moretrust because people are supervising

    themselves

    Business

Fine line between preparing people for

    management and leadership

Growing need to ensure that business leaders

can be more than orators, but also more than

    martinets (Doh, 2003)

Keen attention to bringing forth concepts of

    ethics, decision-making, and critical thinking

    Community

Complex political scenarios play out in

    communities everyday

    -History and Tradition play havoc

    Educational

Whether it is K-12 or another educationalprogram, there is intense scrutiny overdecisions made by leaders

Students need relevant introduction intoleadership in secondary school programs

Universities need to continue to focus on

programs, majors and activities whichreinforce concepts and academic instructionrelated to leadership

    Some questions

How will leadership be used to bridge

    expansive polarization in today's society?

How can we further our understanding of

ethics in relation to leadership to solve many

    of today's issues?

How will our understanding of leadership

identity development help us better teach

    students?

    Caveats on studying leadership

"Anyone who has attempted to lead will

understand that the act of leadership is

    considerably more challenging than talking,

writing or seeing leadership all put together. There's no doubt that one can learn the most

about leadership from actually trying to lead."

    Caveats on studying leadership

"The distinctive feature of leadership is that it

would appear the more we learn about

leadership, the more we realize we have to

    and want to learn."
