tration, more evenly compacted, andsmoother in appearance.

There are many applications wherepneumatic rollers can be used inde-pendent of steel drum rollers.

Larry Hodge of Spartanburg, SC’sHodge Paving, uses strictly theBASIC Model 700 in laying asphaltfor driveways, parking lots, and shortstreets. Before purchasing the BASICpneumatic, Hodge used a steel drumroller. Overall compaction with theModel 700 is much better, he says.

Sena says AFJ Custom Paving usesthe Model 700 on all asphalt paving

jobs, from patching potholes topaving interstates. With a water tankfor additional ballast weight, Senasays the BASIC pneumatic can han-dle large or small jobs with themaneuverability of a small roller.

Jim Wasson of Cushing, OK-basedJLT Corp. has been using the BASICpneumatic roller on asphalt patching, overlay, and chip seal jobs for morethan three years.

“It does a good job on roll-out,especially on chip seal. Too heavy asteel drum will break the aggregate,”Wasson says. “The pneumatic seats it

into the oil better.”Like Sena, Wasson has used other

manufacturers’ pneumatics, but JLTCorp. was in need of something easi-er to transport. Wasson says it’s “a bigplus” that the BASIC pneumatic issmall enough for a flat bed and does-n’t require permits to transport.

Customer supportShannon Chastain’s manner of

doing business was a large influencein Sena, Hodge, and Wasson’s decisions to purchase the BASICModel 700.

Hodge was considering anothermanufacturer but decided to purchasethe BASIC machine “becauseChastain is a good businessman.”And Hodge says that when there wasa small problem with the machine,Chastain was quick to fix it.

“Price was a big factor, but so wassalesmanship,” says Sena, who saysthat when he called to order wearparts, the phone was answered by a“real person” and the parts were sent promptly.

Wasson first saw the machinewhen Chastain stopped in Oklahomaon his way to deliver AFJ CustomPaving’s machine to Santa Fe. Wassonbought the roller at the next NationalPavement Expo.

DesignThe BASIC Model 700 Pneumatic

Roller features a seven-wheel designthat allows each wheel to oscillateindependently for 100% surface con-tact at all times. The machine weighs1 1/2 to 3 tons, depending on ballast.

Chastain says the roller was designedfor optimal safety and visibility. The oper-ator seat is situated in the center, allowingthe operator to see from all angles. Thefront tires are fully exposed so that theywould be the first part of the unit to makecontact, should it run into anything.

AdvantagesFor Larry Hodge, the best thing

about the Model 700 is its simplicity,

especially in maintenance and parts replacement.

Sena says the versatility of themachine is its greatest feature. AndAFJ Custom Paving’s roller hasn’tbroken down once. “And if it didbreak down, it’d be really simple tofix,” Sena says.

Wasson says the BASIC pneumatichas been a great addition to JLTCorp.’s equipment fleet. And thoughthe BASIC roller was selected for itstransportability, Wasson says he likesthat it is simple to operate and main-tain. And above all, Wasson isimpressed with the machine’s capabil-ity to do the job right. n
