About Us

Basic Needs Services Philippines, Inc. is a non-government

organization currently focusing on water and sanitary issues through infor-

mation and education campaign, and project implementation.

We are facilitating basic-needs

service projects in Indonesia, India,

Vietnam, Philippines and

neighboring regions. Some projects

in the African SADC-region are

on-going such as Cambodia, Laos,

Afghanistan, (America).

We and our country partners have

been collaborating with

international institutions such as the

World Bank, ADB, KfW, GTZ,

AusAID, CEU as well as national

and local Governments.

1

Our programs are financially supported by the Federal Republic of Ger-

many, the Commission of the European Union, the Free Hanseatic City of

Bremen, InWent, WSP (World Bank) and UNDP. And since 2001, we are

focusing on development co-operations that aim is to provide sustainable and

environmentally sound services for basic needs to disadvantaged segments of

society.

We are conducting our services in partnership with Bremen Overseas

Research and Development Association (BORDA) a German-founded

not-for-profit organization focuses on the development and dissemination of

environmentally friendly and appropriate technologies which enhance the

communities’ self-help potential, strengthen women participation and protect

natural resources.

Page 4: Basic Needs Services Philippines Incorporated profile lower.pdfAbout Us Basic Needs Services Philippines, Inc. is a non-government organization currently focusing on water and sanitary

The partnership is working for the achievement of the Millennium

Development Goals target for water supply and sanitation by promoting

and implementing demand-oriented decentralized wastewater and

sanitation services in highly populated regions in the Philippines.

Services are provided to communities, small and medium enterprises,

and local government units (LGUs) in conducting:

Community participatory education and

decision-making.

Feasibility Study.

Planning and designing.

Construction and supervision of effective and

cost-efficient appropriate wastewater treatment

systems.

OUR MISSION

To improve the livelihoods of disadvantaged groups within

societies and to sustain the functioning of eco-systems through

dissemination of demand oriented Basic-Needs-Services in the

fields of decentralized sanitation, water and energy supply as

well as solid waste and wastewater management.

Our Services

3

The following Services are currently available in the Philippines:

Quality and Knowledge Management

To achieve high quality standards of measures and

services, local implementation capacity,

competence and expertise must be built at an early

stage.

Target groups and stakeholders need to be

informed about different options in a systematic

manner to ensure high participation during

planning and management.

Available technical and management options are

adapted to preferences of stakeholders and target

groups.

Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS)

1 2 3

4 1. Settler

2. Anaerobic Baffled

Reactor

3. Anaerobic Filter

4. Planted Gravel Filter.

DEWATS projects support micro-small and medium-sized enterprises, institutions as well as

public administrations in planning, designing and constructing effective, reliable, cost efficient

and custom-made wastewater treatment systems.

Technical options within DEWATS are based on a modular and partly standardized design.

DEWATS projects are carried out in Indonesia, India, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

DEWATS is very flexible, walls can be constructed using locally available materials.

Page 6: Basic Needs Services Philippines Incorporated profile lower.pdfAbout Us Basic Needs Services Philippines, Inc. is a non-government organization currently focusing on water and sanitary

4

Community Based Sanitation

Improved public health and reduced

water pollution.

Cooperation with communities,

NGOs, key-stakeholders and political

decision-makers.

Holistic project framework: Besides

improving sanitation infrastructure,

operation and maintenance systems

must be developed with participating

stakeholders that ensure the

sustainability of measures to improve

basic sanitation and community

hygiene.

The following services are available through our South East Asia partner

and BORDA:

Decentralized Water Supply

Remote mountainous villages in

Asia are often located far above

streams and rivers.

As mechanical supplies are

scarce, water-lifting services by

Hydraulic Rams provide a

continuous water supply for

essential sanitation & agriculture

purposes.

Appropriate capacity building

measures ensure that villagers

handle management tasks in

co-operation with partner organi-

zations.

Decentralized basic needs service: Water supply for households and agricul-

tural use

Page 7: Basic Needs Services Philippines Incorporated profile lower.pdfAbout Us Basic Needs Services Philippines, Inc. is a non-government organization currently focusing on water and sanitary

5

Decentralized Renewable Energy

Decentralized power generation by Micro

Hydro Turbines that are powered by the

flow-energy of mountain streams is a

proven method to provide remote villages

with electricity for productive and

household purposes.

Partner organizations are trained to

become “Micro-Utilities” and act as vital

service providers in marginalized regions

All households from a project village have access to electricity -or light, hot water and optionally for handi-

craft production.

Decentralized Solid Waste Management

A regular and environmentally friendly

collection & disposal of solid waste is

demanded by residents and local govern-

ments of Asian cities.

Good Practices of solid waste manage-

ment are characterized by the 3 R

principles: “Reduce – Reuse – Recycle”

Cooperation of residents, local waste

pickers and local government departments

is essential to plan lasting for

decentralized solid waste management so-

lutions.
