BASIC GLOBAL VOCABULARY
1. Economic System: system of production and exchange of
goods and services as well as allocation of resources in a
society
2. Traditional Economy: customs and traditions dictate jobs
and all decision making
3. Command Economy: government makes all Economic
decisions
4. Market Economy: laws of supply and demand guide this
economy type
5. Mixed Economy: has elements of the different
economies: command, traditional and market
6. Factors of Production: resources used to produce goods
and services
7. Geographer: someone who studies the Earth's
natural environment and human society
8. Archaeologist: someone who studies the science
of prehistoric peoples and their cultures by
analysis of their artifacts, inscriptions, monuments,
etc.
9. Economist: someone who studies the
relationship between a society's resources & its
production or output.
10. Scarcity: limited resources for unlimited
wants
11. Primary Source: document or physical object
which was written or created during the time
under study
12. Secondary Source: interprets and analyzes
primary sources
13. Natural Barrier: physical feature that protects
or hinders travel through or over. Mountains,
swamps, deserts
14. Deity: god; divine being
15. Monotheistic: belief in one Deity
16. Polytheistic: belief in many deities
17. Golden Age: an era of great prosperity and
accomplishment
18. Civilization: highly organized group of people
with their own language and ways of living
19. Architecture: art or practice of designing and
constructing buildings
20. Agriculture: practice of farming, including
cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops & the
rearing of animals to provide food, wool, & other
products
21. Subsistence Farming: provides enough food
for the farmer and his family but not enough for
sale
22. Technology: application of scientific
knowledge to make everyday life better/easier
23. Urbanization: movement of people from the
countryside into cities (often for jobs)
24. Crossroads: trade center where many trade
routes meet
