Basic Charting Exercises -following part 1 Four Horizontal Lines On charting paper, rule four (4) horizontal lines eight (8) steps apart. On the topmost line place 32 people at a one-step interval. On the second line place 32 people at a two-step interval. On the third line place 32 people at a three-step interval. On the fourth line place 32 people at a four-step interval. Center the lines so you get a pyramid appearance. Note the change in density of the lines. See how the different intervals affect the weight and size of the line element. Four Vertical Lines Rule four (4) vertical lines eight (8) steps apart. On the leftmost line place 16 people at a one-step distance. On the second line place 16 people at a two-step distance. On the third line place them at a three-step distance and on the fourth line place them at a four-step distance. Again, note the change in density, but also note the effect of the opening of the space between individuals in the vertical element and the readability of the line.

Four Horizontal Lines• On charting paper, rule four (4) horizontal lines eight (8) steps apart.

Four Vertical Lines• Rule four (4) vertical lines eight (8) steps apart. On the leftmost line

place 16 people at a one-step distance. On the second line place 16 people at a two-step distance. On the third line place them at a three-step distance and on the fourth line place them at a four-step distance. Again, note the change in density, but also note the effect of the opening of the space between individuals in the vertical element and the readability of the line.

Four Oblique Lines• Rule four sets of angled lines away from the centerline of your

paper. (create four obtuse upside down V’s.) Place 8 people on each line segment as follows: On the V closer to the front sideline put 8 people on each side at a 1-step interval. On the second V put 8 people on each side at a 2-step interval, On the third V put 8 people on each side at a 3-step interval. On the fourth V put 8 people on each side at a 4-step interval. The lines should be wider than 45 degree angles. You will have to split the centerline as 8 people on each side = 16 and remember you cannot have a point person on the center line when you want the same amount of people on each side. Note changes in density and size(length) of lines and angles.

Two Concentric Arcs Place the point of your compass on the 50 yard line and place the

lead point on the 30 yard line. Draw an arc to the other 30 yard line. Now make a smaller arc inside this one from the 40 to the 40. On each arc place 32 people--straddle the 50 yard line so there are an even amount of people on each side. On the smaller arc put them at a two-step interval. On the larger arc put them at a three-step interval.
