In the laboratory at the BASF subsidiary Deutsche Nanoschicht GmbH, we conduct research on the next generation of superconducting tapes. These are based on metal strips to which a superconductive coating is applied. Superconductors transfer electricity at almost zero loss, which translates into huge savings potential in the genera- tion and transport of electricity. Co-creation and Celebration

150 years of BASF is something special. That is why BASF wants to look back on its long history and cele-brate it. At the same time, BASF’s anniversary program looks to create a lasting contribution that helps to answer the questions facing society. Under the motto “Co-creation and Celebration,” BASF invests in the connectedness and creativity of its employees, cus-

tomers and partners across the globe. With the Creator Space TM program, BASF invites interested minds to share in the process. The program includes events, fes-tivities, scientific symposia and an interactive platform called Creator Space online. This virtual lab gives experts and all interested people access to online discussions on issues facing us in the future.

Three key themes in the anniversary year

Societal trends and challenges will have a major impact on how we live in the 21st century. In collaboration with employees, customers and part-ners, BASF wants to contribute to solving these challenges in the anniversary year and beyond. The themes comprise:

Urban Living Food Smart Energy

Urban Living

What will the cities of the future look like?

Estimates suggest that over 70% of the world’s population will be living in cities in 2050. How can more and more people find living space and quality of life? How can we create intelligent transpor-tation systems? And will there be enough resources, such as water, for everyone? Two examples show how chemistry can help to meet those challenges.

For more information, see basf.com/creator-space/urban-living

Food

How can everyone have access to healthy food?

More than nine billion people will be living on our planet by 2050.What can be done to provide a healthy and balanced diet for all? Innovative products and solu-tions for agriculture and fortifying foods with vitamins are part of the solution.

For more information, see basf.com/creator-space/food

Smart Energy

Where will the energy we need come from?

By 2050, humanity will need two to three times more energy than it does now, but fossil resources are finite. How can we use energy more efficiently and minimize loss-es during storage and transport? How can we expand electricity generation from renew ables in a cost-effective way? Solutions in wind and solar energy and in elec-tric transportation present two possible answers.

Commuting in comfort

Streets and rails are the veins and arteries of a city. Millions of commuters use them every day. Commuters on the way to work in the Canadian city of Montreal have been enjoying a nicer ride since the beginning of 2014, follow- ing the introduction of new subway cars featuring special thermal and acoustic insulation. The Bombardier-made cars have ceilings equipped with BASF’s Basotect® mela-mine resin foam. Noisy and uncomfortable subway rides are hence a thing of the past.

Protecting harvests

To feed a growing global population, harvest yields need to improve. BASF crop protection products guard against fungal infections, pests and weeds and raise the quality of agricultural products. Xemium® developed by BASF pro-tects more than 100 different crops from fungal disease. Xemium’s high intrinsic activity, mobility in the whole plant and easy application helps farmers to raise their yields while improving crop quality.

The power of sun and wind

Solar and wind power plants convert energy to electricity from infinitely available resources. BASF’s expertise goes into improving their efficiency and longevity. BASF is also the leading global supplier of synthetically produced sodium nitrate for solar thermal power plants. A pilot plant estab-lished in collaboration with Novatec Solar in Spain uses inorganic molten salt as a heat transfer medium, enabling higher operating temperatures and hence yielding a high-er electricity output.

Promoting a balanced diet

One million children die of malnutrition caused by Vitamin A deficiency every year. Since our bodies are unable to produce Vitamin A, we need to take our supply from foods rich in Vitamin A such as vegetables and meat – which many people in emerging and developing countries are un-able to afford. BASF’s Food Fortification Initiative assists governments, developmental aid agencies like UNICEF, and producers in supplementing necessary staples such as oil, corn, rice and flour with vitamins and minerals.

Real bundles of energy

Electricity is also taking on an increasingly significant role in the field of mobility. The key to success for electric cars is battery performance. BASF develops and produces cath-ode materials and electrolyte formulations for lithium-ion batteries, and cooperates in this sector in a global research network and with strong partners. BASF was also involved in the development of components for the BMW i3, BMW’s fully electric mass-produced car. It has BASF plastics built into the body and seats.

Anniversary year activities

BASF wants to connect with customers, employees and partners in a creative and inspiring environment. BASF’s Creator Space TM tour combines future chal- lenges in areas like urban living, food and smart energy with local celebrations.

Creator Space tour stops

We stop off in Shanghai to discuss living and transportationin the cities of tomorrow.

May 2015 August 2015Our featured theme in New York is the housing of the future in metropolitan areas.

The key issue in São Paulo is how to avoid food loss.

October 2015 November 2015In Barcelona sustainable food consump tion and nutrition are the main topics.

Smart energy is the main theme in Ludwigshafen.

Making room where space is scarce

Continuously growing cities need more and more living and workspace. Since space is limited, the trend is to build upwards. BASF’s products assist in construction. The admix-ture MasterGlenium® Sky enhances the concrete’s poura-bility for easy pumping to great heights. Green Sense® con-crete technology enables manufacturers to improve the concrete’s strength, longevity, environmental impact and processing characteristics, as evidenced in the One World Trade Center in New York.
