Baseline Environment Audit Introduction In January 2009, the Department for Transport published details of various options for a new high speed railway in the UK and concluded that the most appropriate route for a new high speed line was between London and the West Midlands. A separate company, High Speed Two (HS2) Ltd, was set-up to study the feasibility and viability of new high-speed rail services from London to Scotland using trains capable of speeds over 223miles per hour (360 km/h). The Department for Transport and HS2 Limited ran a consultation on the proposal from February to July 2011 and in January 2012 the Transport Secretary announced the decision to go ahead with HS2. This announcement released new information on proposed alterations to the route’s vertical alignment and associated engineering and infrastructure. The changes, in relation to Buckinghamshire, include both adjustments to the line positioning as well as modification to the engineering form. Contents This assessment is an update on the work prepared by Buckinghamshire County Council to inform the 2011 consultation. Aligning to a methodology previously used by consultants employed to undertake research for HS1 proposals in Kent, a buffer of 1km has been employed in this assessment to provide an indication of potential impacts. For the route, baseline environmental audit has been undertaken using accurate route and earth work data provided directly by High Speed Two Ltd. The following page provides, in table format, a summary of the changes to the 2012 compared to 2011 route, distance of route and statistics according to a number of environmental designations. Following this, detailed maps are provided, based on 1km squares, detailing designated and known environmental features falling on or within a 1 km buffer of the assessed route. In spring 2012 the government will be commissioning an Environmental Impact Assessment, which is likely to provide further information on environmental features along the route.
