Gail Roller, Editor Barry Good News
We are grateful for her years of
service and wish her all the best in
future endeavors. When asked if
we might offer a reception in her
honor, Mary declined, stating that
we already had a big reception on
the occasion of her 50th year. So,
while we cannot do that in a
formal way, you may still offer
your grateful words by dropping
her a note or a card.
Love, Bob

I am sad to report that our
long time organist, Mary
Davis, has resigned from
her position as organist
and Music Minister. Mary has
been the primary organist at
Barry Christian Church for
nearly 51 years. What does that
mean? Well, it means that for
most of that time she has
planned the Prelude, Postlude
and all the music in between.
She has played for over 5000
worship services, for we have
had two services each Sunday –
and an evening service for
several of those years. She
chose the hymns we sang, and
practiced untold hours to perfect
her skills. She has played for
weddings, funerals, Vacation
Bible School, accompanied
soloists and the Chancel Choir.
She often said that her first
church service as organist almost
coincided with her first organ
lesson. Her style encompasses a
wide range of musical genres –
from Honky-tonk to classical.
Barry’s Third Annual Bowling
Get-Together will be on Sunday May 20th from 3-5
PM at the Gladstone Bowling Alley.
Please be there 10 - 15 minutes early,
go to the counter and get your shoes.
Then go all the way to the right to lanes
23 - 24.
Dave Dyer will meet you there to collect
your $5.00 and assign you a lane.
By being there early we can reduce a
traffic jam at the counter and you can
started bowling closer to 3 PM.
There is an opening for the
May 6th Fellowship Dinner. If
your committee or Sunday
School group would like to host
the dinner, please contact Gail
in the church office.

CHURCH HISTORIAN’S NOTE:MELODIES DID YOU KNOW?
The period between Advent Sunday and Easter is generally considered to be the high season of the church
year. That period encompasses the Birth, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. We just finished the Lenten and Easter
portions of our church celebrations. Often, one of the last hymns to be sung on Easter Sunday is the famous
“Christ the Lord is Risen Today”, called rightly ‘Easter Hymn’ and carrying the words of John Wesley.
But the beginning of our church high season, Advent, often incorporates another famous hymn and hymn-
tune, “Sleepers, Awake”. This is not found in our Chalice Hymnal, but it is likely that we will hear it sometime
during the pre-Christmas season in some form. It is often performed early in the season, signaling the Birth.
These two hymn-tunes represent a curious set of musical book-ends for the church year. The first three
notes of the melody of each form a chord, that when sounded together, form the foundation of the rest of the
hymn-tune. This chord, or triad is the stoutest melodic pattern we have in our musical culture, and is often re-
peated in various guises throughout our hymnal. The laminated arches in the church are a structural translation of
the strength of the triad principal found in music. Solid, simple, and direct.
In our hymnal, for example, are no less than 15 examples of tunes that begin with this same melodic
fragment. We frequently sing “Holy, Holy, Holy”, “Kum-ba-yah”, “Eternal Father”, “My Faith Looks Up To
Thee”, and all of the others without grasping the relationship that these tunes have to one another. Another
interesting example of this is “The Star-Spangled Banner”, in which the first three notes of the melody are
reversed.
Here is a listing of the tunes in our hymnal which begin on the same melodic outline:
Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Kum Ba Yah, Holy, Holy, Holy, Clap Your Hands, Morning Has Broken, Brother
James Air, My Shepherd You Supply My Need, Eternal Father, Holy Ground, I Have Decided, Filled With Joy
and Gladness, O God Who Gave Us, My Faith Looks Up to Thee, Lord, I Want to Be a Christian. Incidentally,
the Marines’ Hymn also begins with this melody. They are not all in the same key.
If you have a heart for our youth and would
like to help lead the Sunday School time,
please contact Kelly Frentrop at
[email protected] or 436-5865
Lesson materials are provided.

the same opening 3-note melodic fragment.
