INVESTITURE OF THE 2018 CAPTAINS,

VICE CAPTAINS AND SENIOR LEADERS

Student leadership has a high profile at Barrenjoey and our senior school students are pivotal in

setting the tone of the school, creating a positive culture and in enhancing our school spirit and

pride. Five weeks ago prospective leaders presented their speeches to the entire Formal

Assembly. Furthermore the staff, SRC, Executive and all students voted for their preferred

Captains and Vice Captains.

Congratulations to the following students who were inducted as the Senior Leaders for 2018 at

the Investiture Assembly on August 25.

Zac Abbas Axel Akerman Ella Couston Emily Grunseit

Henry McGilchrist Jack Nesbitt Myles Pymble Joseph Tiernan

Elijah Thomson Beatrix Twibill Hall Ariel Wheeler

At Friday’s Investiture Assembly the students recited the Leadership Pledge, some of which I have included below, as it is a challenge attainable by all Barrenjoey students…

“…and do my best at all times to promote the best interests of my fellow students…

I will set a good example in both word and deed

And I will willingly work with teachers, parents

And students to maintain and promote the good

Name of Barrenjoey High School.”

The entire Barrenjoey learning community voted for the 2018 Captains and Vice Captains under

the cloak of secrecy five weeks ago after listening to the prospective Leaders presentations.

I had the privilege to announce these office bearers.

Captains for 2018 will be: Vice Captains for 2018 will be:

Ella Couston and Elijah Thomson Beatrix Twibill Hall and Ariel Wheeler

I’d like to thank the Captains; Caroline Wang and Yusuf Fayers, Vice Captains; Charlotte Oliver

and Tasman Couston and the other 10 Senior Leaders: Nicholas Bradhurst, Bernhard Brueckl,

Julia Cole, Tegan Field, Gabrielle Joslin-Thomas, Oliver Pitt, Paige Rutherford, Shakirra

Sadrinna, Harry Smith and Evan Turner for being such fine examples to their peers and younger

students.

You have led well… congratulations to the outgoing Senior Leaders.

Last week they handed the staff of leadership to the newly elected team. Their legacy to

Barrenjoey is to have set a new benchmark for student leadership.

The Senior Leaders for 2017 performed their duties right up the last minute, representing

Barrenjoey at community and public events such as the ANZAC Day’s Dawn Service and through

organising ‘fundraising’ and promotional initiatives…. most recently the Disabled Surfer Association

and the Sleepover fundraiser where they raised substantial awareness and funds for worthy

causes.

The duties you have performed will live on in future generations of Barrenjoey. On behalf of the

parents, staff and students I thank you for your outstanding contribution throughout 2016/2017.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PAST STUDENTS

Last week you read about the successful exploits of Jim Colley who recently won a European

Championship in yachting. However, last week’s news was dotted with other stories of successful

ex-Barrenjoey students...

Josh Holmes (class of 2004) was the Warringah Rats halfback who guided the team around the

park magnificently. Rob Kelly (class of 2009) was the Hooker who played a vital role in scrums

and lineouts in last Saturday’s win in the Shute Shield against Northern Suburbs. Josh and Rob

played outstandingly well and both were arguably the best players throughout the final series. Well-

done Josh, Rob and the Warringah Rats Team!

James Lange (class of 2009) launched his debut album last Saturday

night at an evening called Conscious Creative. James spent three years

travelling the world then returned to Australia to further develop his music.

James now performs under his stage name of Karuah and has titled his

album Wild Plums.

Good luck James!

TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY 2017

PARENT, STUDENT AND TEACHER SURVEY

This Term, Barrenjoey is taking part in the Tell Them From Me Student Survey. The survey will

provide us with valuable feedback on what our students, parents and teachers think about school

life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with students.

Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them

improve. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research company, The

Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys.

Students will be asked a series of questions, however there is also a Parent Survey. The survey

asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student

wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help Barrenjoey understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their

child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff,

activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school’s support of learning and

behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

Congratulations to all our students and a teacher who competed

last Sunday in the annual Pub 2 Pub charity Fun Run and

Festival. Many students took part in this annual fun run, but a

special mention to Year 11 Student Tom Colley who was 1st in the

Under 18 Category finishing in 49.03 in the 13km race and 8th

overall. Well done Tom.

The 13km course followed our amazing coastline with spectacular

views of more than a dozen beaches. There was the option to do

either the 13km, 6km or 3km course for recreational runners,

joggers and walkers. All courses finished at Newport Beach for

fun and festivities afterwards.

your phone screen, you will see the School Stream Logo. Once you

go into that the Barrenjoey High School Logo will appear and it will be

business as usual. BUT YOU MUST RE-DOWNLOAD IT FIRST! We

are therefore asking you to please download the School Stream App

On Monday the 21st, The Australian Reptile display came to Barrenjoey High School. The

presenters name was Anthony Stimpson and he brought lots of reptiles in and showed us them

and taught us facts about them. It was very interesting we learnt lots of interesting facts abought

reptiles. My favourite reptile was the saltwater crocodile. I liked the crocodile because its skin was

smooth on the bottom and rough and scaly on top. His mum was 2.5 m long and his dad was 5.2 m

long and his grandad was 8.1 m long and they killed him for handbags but they couldn’t use his

skin as it wasn’t suitable for making handbags so he died for nothing. Written by: Louis Sprouster, Cody Allan and Harley Wilson.

On Monday the 21st of August year 7 were excited to meet Anthony Stimpson and his reptiles. We

had the pleasure to pat Bluey the blue tongue lizard. We learnt that the blue tongue lizard sticks

out its tongue because it reflects ultra violet light which dazzles predators, like eagles allowing it to

escape. The tongue is also blue because it protects it from sun burn. We loved seeing all the

different animals such as the Saltwater Crocodile, two Lizards, the Tawny Frog Mouth, the Ring

Tailed Possum and the Diamond Python. We really enjoyed this experience and hope to see more

of our wonderful wildlife. We hope the rest of year 7 enjoyed the Australian Reptile Display as

much as we did. Written by: Sophie Armitstead and Tara Gillespie.

YEAR 7 REPTILE DISPLAY

Wendy Gillespie from Pelican Rescue and Research was a guest presenter for

Year 10 Marine Studies.

She came to talk with the class about the work she does rescuing injured

Pelicans and water birds on the Central Coast. Normally Wendy is found at Woy

Woy feeding the Pelicans and talking to the public about Pelicans during the 3

o'clock Pelican talk and feed at the Fisherman's Wharf. When she is not doing

that she is rescuing injured Pelicans and other marine birds. Wendy also

presents to other scientists around the world about her area of research into the

effects of recreational fishing on water birds, in particular Pelicans.

The students were shown an array of objects and items removed from injured

Pelicans and their nests. They were able to see the effects of some injuries

sustained by Pelicans and see their successful release. They were able to

handle the very large but lightweight bones from a Pelican. The class used this

as a fund raising opportunity and was able to raise and donate over $73 towards

Pelican rescue and rehabilitation.

SCHOOL FEES ARE BEING SENT HOME, YOU CAN PAY VIA Parent Online

If you feel there are any discrepancies please contact Felicity Hance on 9918 8811.

We have recently disabled the Create Message button in the Parent Portal for parents to contact

teachers.

The reason is that this message does not go directly to the teacher’s email; instead it sits in an

area of the portal that is rarely visited by the teachers.

We believe that it is more expedient for parents to contact teachers through the

[email protected] email – which is attended every day – and that way we can

ensure that the teacher will receive the email in their normal email account.
