What you might ask is a parish? Well, the Church of Scotland is required by constitution to provide the 'ordinances of religion' to every part of the country and it has achieved this successfully by dividing the country into parishes with each hav- ing a parish minister. If you haven’t met me – let me intro- duce myself. I am Susan Sutherland and I have been the minister at Barnhill St Margaret’s for 7½ years. Although it is one of the most chal- lenging jobs it has to be for me the most rewarding. I have the privilege of being with people at very impor- tant milestones and have the responsibility of not only caring for members of our church family but for caring for everyone who lives in our parish. I have my own family to care for too. From the Philippines I have now been in the Philippines for 6 years and greatly enjoy the va- riety of ministries in which we are involved. We are grateful for the practical help we received from 2 teams from Scotland who covered over the canal outside the church. Thank you for all your support and prayers. We would love to welcome you to a Special Service on Sunday 25 September at 10.30am Back to Church Sunday coincides with our Harvest Thanks-giving celebration so you can help us support the Dundee Foodbank by bringing along: A jar of coffee or a box of tea bags, a tin of fruit, custard, rice, beans, soup, tuna, ham UHT milk or cereal They comprise of my husband Bill, our son Craig and his wife Linsey in Aberdeen, and daughter Vivien and her husband August who live in the Philippines. (Vivien has written an article opposite about the work they do there.) This has been a special summer for our family. Vivien and August have been in the UK for a family wedding. Craig and Linsey had a baby boy called ‘Noah’ in July. So I have just become a granny for the first time! It is wonderful! I have been thinking about the most valuable gift you could ever give a child. It is probably not your old car or a university education. I think the most important thing you can ever give a child, whether or not you are a parent, is a relationship with you. This summer I have enjoyed a family wedding, celebrating August’s birth- day with everyone in Aberdeen, a picnic on St Andrews beach, and picking strawberries and raspberries something August has never done! I have loved shopping with Vivien, going out for meals, visiting Noah, feeding him and taking him out for a walk in the pram. At the end of each day I give thanks to God for the time I have spent with my family. I would encourage you to give your children the most important gift you will ever give them a relationship with you. Blessings Susan It has been two years since we were last in the UK and it was lovely to be able to attend my cousin’s wedding and to meet our adorable newborn nephew Noah.

FROM THE MINISTER

Welcome to ‘Network’ – our church newsletter – which is being distrib-uted to the whole parish. What you might ask is a parish? Well, the Church of Scotland is required by constitution to provide the 'ordinances of religion' to every part of the country and it has achieved this successfully by dividing the country into parishes with each hav-ing a parish minister. Social Club

This is one of the charities we sup-port locally and it responds posi-tively to the problems faced by reset-tling homeless and needy individu-als and families in the Dundee area. Donations of good, unwanted basic household goods, bed linen and curtains are always welcome.

You don’t have to be a member to be married in our church. If you live in Barnhill or your parents live in the Parish then it is possible to be married in Church. You don’t have to be a member to have the minister conduct a funeral. Again, if you live in the parish or have a connection with the church then the minister will take the service. Many couples ask about baptism. Vows have to be taken to bring the child up in the Christian faith and in the life and worship of the church. The minister is happy to meet and discuss this further. Telephone Susan on 779278.

Prayer Group On a Tuesday morning a group of people meet at 9.30 am for a time of prayer in the church. We give thanks to God for the blessings he has given. We pray for the world, our city, our congregation. Some people ask us to remember them and to pray for their specific situation or crisis. In our pews there are prayer cards but if you do not come to church and wish us to pray for you then either telephone the minister (779278) or the church office (737294) with your request. You do not need to give any personal information

Are you a committed Christian

excited by the ministry of children and families?

If so, we may have opportunities for you. . .

Our Cradle Roll Service on 4 September is when we invite everyone who has been baptised in Barnhill St Margaret over the last couple of years back to come for a special party. Invitations have been sent out to parents inviting them to bring their children along to this event. For the first part of the service the families will be in church and then go down to the hall. There we will have craft, games, a song and a story together. There will of course be some cake to celebrate this happy occasion.

Cradle Roll

A varied programme of events has been arranged for both the Evening and Afternoon Guilds for the 2016/17 session. I hope to welcome back previous and new Guild mem-bers. The Evening Guild meets fort-nightly on Tuesday evenings at 7.30 p.m. in the church hall and the Afternoon Guild is held monthly at 2.30 p.m. also in the church hall. The first Evening Guild is on 13 Septem-ber and the Afternoon Guild on 27 September. Lifts can usually be arranged for those who have diffi-culty in attending.

Some members of our Guild Link from Kingswells near Aberdeen are attending our church service on 18

September. There will be a lunch afterwards at the Woodlands Hotel. Please let me know if you would like to join us.

Please make a note in your diary of the date of our annual fund-raising Coffee Morning. It is to be held on Saturday 12 November from 10am till noon. For further details on any Guild mat-ters, please contact me. Norma McDonald (Guild President) Phone: 01382 793834

The Garden Group

Many of our members are involved in caring for our Church and the grounds in which it stands. These people are largely unseen as they work quietly in the background. We have volunteers who cut the grass and the hedges and tend the flowerbeds and we want them to know that although we don't see them , we appreciate all they do.

Messy Church draws people of all ages together and helps us to experience what it means to be part of a Christian community outside of Sunday worship. At its heart, Messy Church, aims to create the opportunity for par-ents, carers and children to en-joy expressing their creativity through craft work, to sit down together for a meal of pizza or macaroni, to listen to a bible story, sing together and have fun. We meet on Saturdays from 4.00 - 5.30pm. Here are some dates when you can join us in our hall at 1 Guthrie Terrace: 27 August 24 September 29 October 26 November

Contemporary Worship In September 2015 we launched our 9.15am service using multi-media and contemporary worship songs. The service is led by a team – Susan the minister, Beth, Anita, Ian and Jenny.

We arrive around 9am for coffee and donuts. If you are looking for some-thing different – why not come and join us?

Traditional Service Our 10.30 am service is more tradi-tional and baptisms are normally arranged for this service. We have a choir and our youngest member is just 18! Praise is led mainly by the organ although we use backing tracks each week too. There is a crèche for young babies and older children go down to the hall during the service for Junior Church. The service is very busy so come early to avoid parking problems. If you are elderly and require a lift to church then this can be arranged. A list of drivers is printed on page 2 of this edition of ‘Network’.

Monday is the Minister’s

day off: please call her only

if your request is urgent

Barnhill St Margaret’s Church sup-ports the worship, mission and service of the Church of Scotland through the money we give in our offerings. Our Congregation’s contri-bution to Ministries and Mission for 2016 is £94,896. £80,946 of this goes towards the cost of providing over 1000 ministers and other parish workers in communities throughout Scotland. £13,950 of the total contribution is used to support the Church’s work in providing social care services as well as paying towards the day to day administra-tive, financial and legal matters.

Mission and Service

We had a fantastic start to the school holidays when we became guardians of Ancora, the City of Light. Because some of the story treasures were lost, the light was no longer shining as before. The Guardians had to find 5 story treasures to enable the light to shine brightly once more. The children along with their leaders and helpers had fun completing the various activities. We must keep telling the wonderful stories that are found in the Saga (another name for the Bible) so that the City of Light (God’s kingdom) keeps shining. Here’s to next year!!
