Insight #1: Separation- Company is separated into divisions internally

- Separation between retailer and corporate offices

- Mr William Lynch, former CEO, kept his distance from the traditional business and never moved into Barnes & Noble’s corporate offices on Fifth Avenue. He worked in the retailer office, which was located somewhere else.

Insight #2: Many divisions- Barnes and Nobles has failed with its Nook business and has looked for

other ways of continuing to build their company.

- It made more money on its non-book products than its book products (in-store), especially during the holiday season.

- B&N has a spin-off company, Barnes & Noble Education. - Separate entity with its own stocks in the NYSE- Works with the schools with textbooks, retails, and tech support.

Insight #3: No international presence- While competitors Apple, Amazon and Kobo continue to expand

internationally while fighting for market-share in the U.S., Barnes & Noble stores briefly expanded to the UK and Luxembourg and closed earlier this year.

- The Nook Store had been available in 40 countries, including Australia, much of Europe, Canada, the UK, and the US; as of August 2015 the Nook Store is only available in the US and UK. Instead B&N are now focusing on their Education spin-off.

How would B&N benefit?-It would make Barnes and Noble operate as a single unit, instead of separate division.

-The corporate and retail division will function as one and not be disjointed. -As well as recognize their business and function under one name, especially their spin-off Barnes & Noble Education

-More of a transparent “team environment” amongst employees and management means employees within corporate/retail divisions can be more involved within the innovative aspect of the company i.e. creating new products, building new sectors and services in the company

-Since Barnes and Noble is established in the United States, by expanding to other countries will help them build their brand internationally and make a profit in other countries, particularly developing countries.

-It will give them an equal footing with other companies like Apple and Amazon. -Created a business model that will work for other countries when it comes to selling their product and brand.

-They can reestablished their Nook business because it has potential to be something more, even rival Amazon’s Kindle and Apple’s iPad.

How would B&N benefit?- As B&N focus more on being a lifestyle brand, pushing their sales on non-book related items -

gifts, toys, stationery….They can monetize on creating new products other than tablet e-readers (Nook).
