Dear Parents, As the academic year begins to draw to a close it is a time for reflection, celebration and giving thanks. The children have had such an amazing year! It has been an absolute pleasure and delight to watch them all grow, develop and become such competent, self-assured learners. For the children in Year Two and their families, who we have known for a number of years, it is an especially poignant time. I hope you feel your child will take away many significant learning experiences, precious moments and a wealth of happy memories from their time at Barnes Infant Academy. It is also a time to share some of the amazing learning which has taken place across the school. In July we had further indication of success through the notification that Barnes Infant Academy had successfully achieved the Platinum Anti-bullying award, building on the established best practice and the achievement of the Gold Anti-bullying award three years ago. The evidence presented was verified by a group of external as- sessors, which included children from another school. Although this year has been busy, it has also been very productive. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Governors of the Trust Board, who are such an amazing group of elected volunteers, willing to give up their own time to help move the school for- ward so positively, the staff, whose dedication and commitment shine through, and of course our wonderful children and families who make it all worthwhile. We look forward to seeing you all in September and hope you have a fantastic holiday. With the very best of wishes, Mrs J. A. Dear Parents,

As the academic year begins to draw to a close it is a time for

reflection, celebration and giving thanks. The children have had such an amazing year! It

has been an absolute pleasure and delight to watch them all grow, develop and become

such competent, self-assured learners.

For the children in Year Two and their families, who we have known

for a number of years, it is an especially poignant time. I hope you

feel your child will take away many significant learning experiences,

precious moments and a wealth of happy memories from their time at

Barnes Infant Academy.

It is also a time to share some of the amazing learning which has taken place across the

school. In July we had further indication of success through the notification that

Barnes Infant Academy had successfully achieved the Platinum Anti-bullying award,

building on the established best practice and the achievement of the Gold Anti-bullying

Great news…

The Academy has been awarded the Platinum Anti-bullying Charter

Mark. The Anti Bullying Charter Mark was created to help schools show-

case the work they do to prevent bullying.

Do you know that everyone carries an invisible bucket? Its purpose is to

hold positive thoughts and feelings. This is based on the book ‘Have you

filled a bucket today?’ by Carol McCloud.

Also thanks to Class 1 who performed their friendship song as part of

the assessment.

The Nursery children enjoyed a visit to Hall Hill Farm and had lots of fun meeting different farm

animals. The boys and girls bottle fed a lamb, held the chicks, rabbits and guinea pigs and went on a

tractor and trailer ride too.

The children enjoyed meeting goats, sheep, pigs, highland cows

and llamas too!

They have also enjoyed taking part in science Week. We decided to focus on bubbles and carried out different experiments. We made large bubbles with a hula hoop

outdoors, carried out the Mentos and coke experiment and watched raisins dance in lemonade.

“It look’s like an exploding volcano!” said Eli

“Wow they are huge, I want to pop them!” Greyson said

excitedly.

The Reception children have also enjoyed Science Week this term. We love carrying out investigations!

Over the course of the year we have explored changes of state using ice and also when baking. We have looked at the life cycle of the caterpillar and observed changed over time

when growing cress.

During science week we loved the rainbow skittles experiment and making gloop with cornflower. We tested magnets and

made and tested our own boats in the water area.

Following our interest in animals and new life, we decid-ed it would be a great idea to take a trip to a Farm to

see the baby animals first hand. The children thoroughly enjoyed feeding a greedy baby lamb a bottle of milk,

feeding the teddy bear sheep and llamas as well as hav-ing a hold of chicks, rabbits and guinea pigs! We also

enjoyed a tractor ride to see all of the larger animals in the paddocks around the farm too! The children were all extremely well behaved and the farmers who worked with us all commented on the out-

standing behaviour of the children, and how it it stood out from other children, who visited,

which is great news! .

Henri Matisse ‘The Snail’ 1953 We made our own Matisse-inspired collage. We took a closer look at nature and were creative with shapes and colours as we

created our snails.

We found out about the French artist Henri Matisse who is known for

making colourful works of art. He used a variety of materials in his work,

including paint, bronze (for his sculptures), and he also made drawings using

charcoal. As Matisse became older, he began to work with brightly coloured paper

and would ‘paint with scissors’ to cut out shapes, animals, leaves, dancers and

flowers and then arrange them.

As part of our minibeast topic, the children in Year One were set the challenge of designing and making their own minibeast hand puppet. The

children recorded their ideas through drawing and then chose their favour-ite design. Then they were ready to begin to make their puppet. The children did a fantastic job using chosen resources, for example, felt, googly eyes, pipe

cleaners and card.

This half term our topic has been ‘It’s a Bugs Life’. The children in Year One have enjoyed finding out about minibeasts and their habitats. The children expressed a particular interest in snails so lessons were

planned to satisfy their curiosity. We started off by observing garden snails and our giant land snails to find out as much about them as we possibly could. We also found out about the life cycle of a snail

and researched some facts about each stage. Do you know how snails hear or how many years they live?

Following on from the Barnes Park Heritage Event, we have been learning about the environment and

how we can help protect our planet.

We conducted an investigation which focused on the effects of Greenhouse Gases. First the

children made two mini environments using Lego bricks, then they put an ice cube in each, one

was covered with cling film and one without. The children then observed the effect of the

greenhouse gases (the cling film) on the environment. They concluded that Greenhouse Gases cause

Global Warming and this is a problem because the ice melted more quickly.

We have also been researching the effects of Global Warming on our planet and

ways to reduce this. One of the main things we have considered is the over use

of single use plastic and how we can limit this.

In our class groups, we have been designing a sculpture or mosaic which we would

like to make using recycled plastic. The children have been bringing in plastic

from home and we have been collecting it in school.

We have conducted lots of experiments as part of science

week! As you can see—we had a fantastic

time.
