The Mastheadby

Jeanne Ferris, coeditor

Happy New Year! Ourcover this first monthof the new decade comesfrom the 1990 BamfieldMarine Station calen-dar. The artist, ScottGarriott, 17, fromWilliams Lake, was alsoa winner in the 1989compebition. If youwould }ike to order acalendar, please call orwrite the Marine Sta-tion.

The Barkley Sounderbegins the 90's with acleaner, crisper look.We replaced our second-hand workhorse of a du-plicator with a newCopytron duplicator, which prints 300 highlylegible copies of eachpage. We do the layoutof each double page onour AT computer usingWordPerfect and print abeautifuL, 'cameraready' original on aIaser printer. Then wemake a stencil on aclassic electronic sten-cil maker. The stencilgoes on to the duplica-tor and, voila, the I

printed page emerges. We stitl collate, sta-pl€, fold, insert andsort by hand, trying toleave out bend and nuti-late. From here, theSounder's go by boat toMary Scholey at the postoffice. Character-building fun, as you cansee by reading Jim'scolumn.

As we begin oureighth year in print,Ird like to thank every-one who has contributed, and continues to con-tribute, to the successof the Sounder. Pu11in9your thoughts out of theprimordial soup and put-ting then on paper forall the world to see isnever easy. $le sincere-Iy appreciate the ef-forts of everyone who ''

writesr o! draws, forthe Barkley Sounder.Thank you.

And thank you to ouradvertisers too, many ofwhom have been with usright from the start,'way back in '83.

Biology by Phoneby

Jeanne Ferris, Bamfield Tutor

Are you interested in learningthe basics of biolog5r throughlabs and videos at the MarineStation and teleconferences inyour own home? The NorthIsland College course Biology060 will be offered through anew and experimental "audio-conferencing" project beginningon January 23. Every Tuesdayevening at 7 p.m. students inremote places like Gold Riverand Bamfield will be able toconnect'with each other andwith Dr. George Knox, the PortAlberni Biolog5l Instructor, via aconference call.

This has several advantages. For one, you get some feedbackas to how other students feelabout the chapters and labs youwere assigned for the week. Foranother, you can ask questionsabout your reading and asslgn-

ments from the comfort of yourown home. furd third, you havethe advantage of two tutors: Dr.Knox via phone and your regularBamfield tutor (me) in person.

One problem many peoplehave with correspondencecourses is keeping the initialenthusiasm going through to theend of the semester. Withweekly conference calls fromyour own home, you have oneless reason to procrastinate, andone more reason to burn themidnight oil and get through thecourse.

The tentative semester sched-ule is listed below. Cost forBIO 060 is $75., which includesbooks and learning materials.BIO 060 is the equivalent ofGrade 12 Biologr. For moreinformation, call me at home orat the Marine Station.

COMMUNITY PRIDESTEP ONE

''LET'S GET ORGANIZED'by

Arny PhillipsAs the name implies,

this workshop is thepreliminary step in or-ganizing a communitywith an action plan theycan agree on. It seemsthat a few residentshave grreat fears andsuspicions regardingthis program and haveexpressed their concernto the organizers inVicLoria.

For your information, the Community Pride peo-ple are ngL going tomake reconrmendations tctany "government agency"regarding ap-ythinq we ascitizens of Bamfielddecide to undertake. They are here strictlyto help us "get organ-ized"; to conduct abrainstonning sessi"on inthe morning, followed bya planning session inthe afternoon.

They will bringwith them "informationkits, videosr. guide-books, pamphlets, hand-outs, worksheets, andevaluation forms as nec-essary to perform theworkshop." At a laterdate there is a secondworkshnp we can reguestentitled "Step Two:Let's Get Technicalt'.This will provide in-depth technical informa*tion on how to carry outplans which are clearlyagreed on.

At the last CommunityAffairs meeting, a mo-tion, was made and sec-onded as follows: "Thatthe Corununity endorseand accept the ComnunityPride Program." Thiswas subsequentJ-y tabled,by a member of the Bam-field Preservation andDevelopment Society, toensure that democraticdiscussion could takeplace at a CommunityAffairs meeting wherethis topie would be of-ficially placed on theAgenda. byAl Benton

Regional Director

Here we are into anew decade, but with acarryover of o1d Prob-Iems. f sincerely hoPethat they will soon beresolved, so that we canget int,o some '90's pro-blems for a change.

The garbage problemseerns to be nearly sol-ved, although I am wellaware that some PeoPleare still not happy withthe proposed solution. The biggest fear seemsto be that the TransferStation will be a mess, wherever it is located.rf it were located somedistance from town, likethe old dump, I have nodoubt it would be, 1o-cated closer to town ibstill could be. ?he keyquestion j"s how much weas residents care aboutour torn. If we movedto Bamfield ao that necould live like pi9s,the Transfer Stationwill reflect that. Somepeople have said to methat the mess on the

16

Government Docks in thesummer reflects what theTransfer site wi}l l<loklike. I disagree. Inmy opinion the docks area mess because of insuf-ficiently freguent gar-bage collections, notbecause people want tothrow their garbage any-where. The TransferStation will be clearedas often as necessary, and I believe that thetourists will treat itwith respect if we set agood example. For thosethat don't the RegionalDistrict vill soon havepower to ticket and finethem.

rt seems a shame tostart a new year outwith a four letter word, but I feel that I mustgive you an update onthe ROAD. As you willhave noticed in lastmonth's paper, the Min-ister of Highways hasreferred the natter tothe Vancouver fslandTransportation TaskForce for reconsider-ation. f have just spo-ken to the Chairpersonof the Task Force, MayorGiLlian Trumper of PortAlberni, who informs methat they will be havinga meeting with the Hon-ourable Stan Hagen, (now

Page 19: Barkley Sounder...2016/02/08  · average high temPerature was 13.00. Port Alberni had a 14.9oC average high. Our average Iow, temperature in Bamfield gire us a cal Rnal Estate eircerns.

the ltlinister Responsiblefor Regionalization) inCourtenay on January19th to decide the mostappropriate action totake on the Road Con-nector guestion andother matters. I shallreport to you on theresults of those meet-ings next rnonth, becauseit is unlikely that anyaction will be takenbefore February.

One other relat,ed itemis the proposed Commun-ity Pride l{orkshop nextmonth. Unfortunately,it has come to be asso*ciated with the Roadissue by many people. Iconsider this most un-fortunate. Alt,hough Iam somewhat cynicalabout the likelihood ofthis leading to a con-tinuing process to dis-cuss the evolution ofour Community, I beLievet, hat such a process isvital if Bamfield is toexert some cont, rol overits own growth in thenext few years. I don'tthink that anyone whohas seen the changesover the last few years, and sees the ever in-creasing pressures forchange, can doubt thatthe next five years willbe critical to the de-

velopment of Bamfield.Unfortunately, I cannotsee Community Pride suc-ceeding if it is in anyway connected to theRoad controversy. Ivrill participate in theWorkshop however it,evolves, but I wouldurge the organizers todelay j.t until a deci-sion is rnade by the Min-istry of Highways. Whe-ther the decision be yesor no there will be adist.inct. and differentset of problems to ad*dress, and the CommunityPride forum could be anexcellent one in whichtcl discuss them.

Final-ly, I have onemore item for your con-siderat,ion. November of1990 marks the end of mycurrent term as RegionalDirector. As you know, politicians generally(even the two-bit var-iety such as myself) arenot noted for makingirrevocable decisions, however f feel it isunlikely that r shallstand for re-election.I am mentioning this now$o that any of you whonight be interested inthe position will haveample opportunity toconsider the matter. ftreguires guite a bit of I

WESTERN CANADAWILDERNESS COMMITTEE

byLaura TaYlor

If you are concernedabout the ProPosed Togg*ing in the Carmanah VaL-7ey or in wiTderness Pre-servation yau shouLd knawabout the hlestern Canadawilderness Committee(wcwc ) .

The WCWC was formedin 1980 by a handful,.'ofpeople to further thework of existing wilder-ness conservation groupsin gathering suPPort forpreservation of wilder-ness areas, esPeciallYSouth MoresbY. The foun-ding directors had faiththat mosL Canadians wouldsupport greater wilder-ness preservation andpressure their Poli-ticians to act according-Iy if they had accb'is toeducakional mateFials ex-plaining the imPoitance'of nilderness . '''''' ' '

In the late fall of1980r oD a shoestringbudget, the Connitteeprinted 10,000 lrlesternCanada Endangered lgilder-

ness Calendars. The Com*mittee grew slowlY butsteadily during the firstfew years, expanding itsproductions to includenot only an annual calen-dar but also posters andeducational newspaPers.

The $lCttlC has beenactively involved in thecampaigns to protect theSouth Moresby wildernessin the Queen Charlottesand to prevent the logg-ing of Meares Island.South Moresby became aNational Park Reserve in1987. The Mea:res Islandcase has been before theSupreme Court of B.C. forthe past five years.Meanwhile, the WildernessCornmittee has worked onalmost every major wild-erness preservation issuein B.C.

The Wilderness Com-mittee produced its firstbook, l,Ieares Island -Protecting a tlatural Par-adise, in 1985. It wasan immediate success andis currently in its sec-ond printing. A secondbook, Hiking Guide to the'Big Trees of SouthwesternBritish Col-unbia was Pub-lished in 1987 and hasalso been very well re-ceived. The I{CWC is be-coming increasingly in-volved in needed scien-

tific research and wild-erness trail-building.However, the mainstay oftheir work is still edu-cational publicationscalendars, posters andthe educational news-papers. To date morethan two nillion copiesof these neetspapers havebeen distri.buted.

Amongst the ttlCWCoutstanding achievementsis their first video -Carmanah Valley. Theyhave also won two majorcourt battles. Onestopped the helicopterwolf ki1I "predator con-trol program" in the Mus*kwa Valley inNortheastern B.C.

The second casej-nvolved an injunctionbeing sought against wCwCfor constructing accesstrails on Crown lands inorder to carry out, re-search and to enable thepublic to see wildernessareas threatened withdestruction. MacMillanBloedel (MB) Ltd., B.C.'slargest logging company, challenged the WCWCTsright to build trails inCarmanah Creek where M&Bhave a tree farm licence. The B.C. Supreme Courtruled that the T{CWC eterenot trespassers in Car*manah Valley. The Tree

Farm Licence only givesM&B rights to cut theforesL, not the right toprevent the public fromrecreationally using andenjoying Crown lands in away that, does not direct-ly interfere with theirlogging. After resolu-tion of the court case, and with lots of volun-teer help, the WCWC com-pleted their CarmanahTrail to Canada's tal.lesttrees. The Book and artexhibition - Cartanah;Artistic Visions of anAncient Rainforest, willbe a significant steptowards saving the wholeof Carmanah Valley forfuture generations.

Itluch of the work ofthe Corunittee has beendone by volunteers. Itis the wCrgC's good for-tune to eonsistently havebeen able to depend onexcellent volunteers tohandle correspondence andto hel-p on the education-al campaigns.

Unfor-tunately, like so manyothers, she had a hipinjury., To me she nas afriend of a lifetime. Apicture shows me as ababy with her and hertwo daughters andmother-in-law beside mybasket chair. The viewdown the harbour showsno shopr no houses andtrees to the beach. Sheis a good-looking lroman, straight and slim inthis picture. rn lateryears she retained thesefeatures with the addi-tion of some wrinklesthat someone ohce re-marked upon as "an in-teresting face for anartist to study."
