Morbid obesity is defined as being at least 50-100 pounds over an ideal body weight or having a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher. Severe or morbid obesity is a serious health condition that places an individual at an increased risk for several illnesses and a shorter life expectancy. Diet and exercise alone is rarely effective. Surgical treatment has been accepted as the most reliable and effective means of treating this problem for patients who have failed other medical weight-loss treatment options. Pre- and post-operative education and support classes are available to help you achieve and maintain successful outcomes. The bariatric team will help guide you through the steps necessary to have surgery and provide you with the support essential for post-operative success for years to come. Long-term support and resources available will include nutrition management, psychologic counseling, medical evaluation for chronic health issues, continued surgical care, and support groups and workshops such as the Lifestyle Lab classes. SERVICES GASTRIC BYPASS The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is considered the ‘gold standard’ of weight loss surgery. The stomach is made smaller and the first portion of the intestine is bypassed. This is the most powerful weight loss operation. Significant improvement in metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, is likely to be seen.

SLEEVE GASTRECTOMYThe Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy - often called the sleeve - is performed by removing approximately 80 percent of the stomach. The remaining stomach is a tubular pouch that resembles a banana. The sleeve has very low long-term complication rates. This is the most common operation performed for weight loss today.

GASTRIC BANDThe Adjustable Gastric Band - often called the Lap-band™ - involves an inflatable band that is placed around the upper portion of the stomach, creating a small stomach pouch above the band, and the rest of the stomach below the band. The band can be tightened over time to help control portion size.
