Year 6 students will head to the GRIP Leadership Conference in Bendigo on Tuesday 1st May, the first day back for Term 2. This opportunity is part of the students’ Personal Development program and will focus on developing their awareness of their role as a member of our school and as a citizen, and skills that will equip them for leading themselves and others now and in the future. ANZAC Day falls in the holidays this year. All students are invited to march representing the school. Our school leaders will be involved in the town commemoration and Mrs Sweeney will coordinate our school on the day. Students need to wear school uniform and assemble as a school group to march. This is an important community event that we are proud to be part of. Our school’s Cross Country event will be run this Friday, 13th April, the last day of Term 1. The event is being held in Riverside Park Barham this year. Thank you to the Murray River Council and Gannawarra Shire for allowing the event in this public setting. We look forward to seeing school families there to support the event. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Catherine Peach SMILING MIND – MAKING MINDFULNESS ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL Last Wednesday, school staff participated in training about the Smiling Mind program. This program promotes mindfulness and self-awareness in students that serves them well in learning.

During this training, staff developed an understanding of: • what mindfulness is and how to practice

mindfulness; • the science behind practicing

mindfulness, including neuroplasticity research;

• how mindfulness can benefit young people and support their learning in the classroom;

• how to use the Smiling Mind app and web-app in the whole-school and classroom settings.

Teachers will be planning for the implementation of a mindfulness program that will link in closely with our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) systems. We are most grateful for the generous support our school has received that has enabled us to participate in this training and explore how Smiling Mind can enhance students’ learning and wellbeing, and help us to build and maintain a positive, engaging learning environment. NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY 2018 In 2018 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be held for all students in Years 3 and 5 in all government and non-government schools. This program will assess the literacy and numeracy learning of students in Australian schools. The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level

of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the agreed national benchmarks of student achievement. The tests will be conducted across Australia in Term 2 on the same days for all students according to the following timetable: • Tuesday 15th May: Language Convention

test (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) and a separate Writing test.

• Wednesday 16th May: Reading test

• Thursday 17th May: Numeracy test (Number, Algebra, function and pattern; Chance and Data; Measurement and Space)

• Friday 18th May: A make-up day is scheduled for students who missed a section of the test or were absent on a particular day.

Parents who wish to withdraw their child from the tests must discuss their preference with the principal and sign a parent or carer consent form. Please make an appointment with Mrs Peach if you would like to discuss this further. Additional information for parents about the National Assessment Program can be found on this website:

http://www.naplan.edu.au/parents/parents.html

Please make an appointment to see Mrs Peach if you would like further information about your child’s participation in the National Assessment Program.

WESTERN RIVERINA AFL SELECTION TRIALS SUCCESS Three Barham PS students competed at the Western Riverina AFL Selection Trials in Leeton last Thursday. Jye McGowan, Eli Boyd and Will Lake played well throughout the day and are to be commended for their effort and sportsmanship.

Congratulations to Will and Eli who were selected in the Riverina AFL side to compete at the State carnival at Bateman’s Bay in May. This was a fantastic result for the boys. Well done! CARE WHEN STUDENTS ARE UNWELL Parents and carers are reminded that some illness and conditions that children present with may be contagious. It is important that parents and carers check with a medical practitioner if they are worried about the symptoms of any illness, and to check whether time away from school is required.

P&C Meeting Tuesday 10th April

7.30pm All Welcome

OUR HARMONY DAY CELEBRATION On Thursday of this week, students will participate in a day of activities to celebrate Harmony Day. Harmony Day was officially on 21st March this year, but we are marking the day this Thursday.

Students will participate in a range of activities in groups of mixed ages, including sport and games, language and culture activities, maths & art, and an outdoor art installation. Students in Kinder through to Year 6 will work together to learn about and celebrate cultural diversity. The day is about developing a sense of inclusiveness, respect and belonging for everyone. The activities will create opportunities for all of us to think, talk about and recognise how our differences make Australia a great place to live.

Did you know? • Over the last 70 years more than seven

and a half million migrants have made Australia their home.

• Nearly half of Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was.

• People from over 200 countries make up our Australian community and over 300 languages are spoken in our homes.

• Apart from English the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi.

This day will be a great way to promote the important message of Harmony Day and our school – everyone belongs! SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY THIS FRIDAY This year, our school’s Cross Country event is being held in Riverside Park Barham, running across to Koondrook and back again.

All students will walk down to the park at 9.00am to be able to walk the course at 9.30am. The course will begin at the grassed area behind the Barham Reception Centre. The students will run down in front of the boardwalk and across the pedestrian bridge into Koondrook. From there, the students will follow the river walking track to their designated turnaround point. Mr Marsh is coordinating the event and will very much appreciate some parent

volunteers to help with timekeeping and supervising the course. Marshalls will be situated along the track at the various wooden statue carvings. Students will then finish their race in front of the boardwalk near the rotunda. The ‘Order of Events’ is as follows (please note that these times are approximates):

• 10:15: Year 2 Boys and Girls (1000m) • 10:30: 8/9 Boys and Girls (2000m) • 11:00: 10 Years Boys and Girls

(2000m) • 11:30: 11 Years Boys and Girls

(3000m) • 12:00: 12/13 Years Boys and Girls

(3000m) • 12:45: Kinder (500m) • 1:00: Year One Boys and Girls (500m)

Students in Kinder and Year One will be walking down to the Riverside Park at 11.30am where they will walk their course after the 12/13 Years race. Presentations of certificates and champions will follow after the final race.

P&C are offering a barbeque lunch, with food available from 11.30am. Come along and support the students and teachers at this school event, and be part of the fun. BOOKS TO BOOST BRAINS – SERIES STUDENTS OFF TO STEAM CAMP Four Barham Year 4 students are off to the 2018 STEAM Camp at Berrigan PS on the Wednesday and Thursday of this week, 11th and 12th April. The camp will be an opportunity for Year 4 students to be involved in collaborative problem solving activities involving STEM/STEAM principles with strong links to literacy and numeracy, robotics and coding.

The students will have three mentors at the camp: • Michelle Meracis: Apple Distinguished

Educator, eLearning Leader/Coach, Teacher, Lifelong Learner, KidzTek Founder, STEAM Advocate

• Emma Phillips: STEAM teacher • Vicki Kempton: science teacher, robotics

and coding educator with a love of challenging students.

Students will engage with a variety of learning activities, including time for groups to work on challenges and whole group tasks, all culminating in presentations showcasing student learning, using technology of course. Students will travel home with parents/carers at the end of the camp. This is a wonderful opportunity provided by the BiJOU Learning Community (Berrigan, Urana, Jerilderie and their other network schools). We know the students will enjoy the experience. BOOKS TO IGNITE READING Literacy skills often progress suddenly in leaps and bounds. The secret is to keep kids of all ages reading over the weekends and school holidays.

Even 20 minutes a night can make a huge difference to their reading, comprehension and general knowledge. It’s also a great way to settle their minds down before sleep (for adults too!).

If your child hasn’t found a book that grabs their imagination, why not try them on a series book from the Premier’s Reading Challenge list? Here are top suggestions for all ages, including young adult: http://bit.ly/1dLSGC0

ICAS ASSESSMENTS ON OFFER Parents are reminded that permission notes and money are due for the ICAS Spelling, Writing, English and Mathematics tests if you would like your child to participate. ICAS assessments encourage critical, higher order thinking, and include challenging questions of a high academic standard. This is a great opportunity for students to participate in an internationally recognised assessment program. The assessments will be completed at school during normal school hours. Be sure to return the note before the end of term if your child would like to participate. 2018 EXCURSIONS Following school review of our excursions including curriculum review, consultation with school families and a review of monies outstanding from previous excursions, the excursions for 2018 have been set. • Stage 3: Port Phillip Island & Melbourne,

including environmental and life science activities, surf school and ‘School of Rock’ theatre performance.

• Stage 2: Campaspe Downs Adventure

Camp, Kyneton. The program uses outdoor and challenge activities to excite, inspire and build confidence, and to develop a sense of achievement and a better attitude in school.

• Stage 1: yet to be planned Further details will be issued early next term, including finalised costs. School families are invited to begin making payments for their child’s excursion.

Payment plans can be negotiated to suit your circumstances. Please see Mrs Peach. While the decision about the excursions may not align with your thoughts, it is a decision made considering the options and views expressed by many, and the educational and equity priorities that we as a school must address. The experiences students will have on these excursions have been extensively researched and are well planned, and will provide treasured learning and memories for all who attend. TERM 1 FINISHES ON FRIDAY 13TH APRIL Students will resume classes on Tuesday 1st May.
