We have a lot of newer members, so I thought it would be a good idea to give you an overview of our Water Taxi Pub Crawl, and what to expect.

Water Taxi Pub Crawl continued. By Amy Bres low

How long is the Event - The average is 3 to 4 hours, depending on boat time schedule. Does everyone go together - There are three boat times. Each boat has a ca-pacity of 58 guests. Each boat has a group Captain(s) to escort them, and make sure that they arrive at the right destination, and leave as a group. There is beer for sale on the boat, you are welcome to bring snacks. Generally, when one boat arrives at a destination, the group already there is preparing to leave that location. Too many people at one location can overwhelm the bar and result in bad service. What if I want to stay longer at a location - If you decide to leave your group or stay behind when your group leaves a location, you are on your own. If there is a later boat, and if there is room available, you may board, but if there is no room, or you are on the last boat to leave a location, you will need to provide your own return transportation. You may not board other water taxi boats that visit that loca-tion, as you will not have a Water Taxi Ticket. What can I expect at each location - Each location is a unique bar with beverage and food service available. Most locations will provide the group with a discount on your purchases. Your group Captain will advise you what each location is offering. You are responsible for anything you order. You must pay your tab before you leave each location. Any other activities held during the crawl? Along with the pub crawl, we hold a poker run. You can purchase your poker card sheets at registration. When you purchase the card(s) you will get pull a card and get a stamp. At each bar stop, you will pull another card and get your sheet stamped. Final draw at the end of the crawl. Highest poker hand will win a great prize… What else does my registration to the Water Taxi Pub Crawl, include: All registered guests will re-ceive a coupon good for a welcome cocktail at the Friday night pool party. This party takes place at the River-side Hotel from 6 pm to 10 pm on Friday, May 19, 2017. The drink coupon is only good at this time The party will have live music by Lynley Tolls of Calypso Nuts and Girlz Rule fame… We also have a ducky race, a si-lent auction and other fun activites. There will also be a “Last Pirate Standing” Party on Saturday May 20, 2017 from 6 pm to 10 pm, also at the Riverside Pool Deck. Music provided by Catfish Hunter. Continued on page 3

Page 3 Water Taxi Pub Crawl continued By Amy Bres low Is my registration refundable - Sorry, no refunds allowed. This is a charity event.

Do I need to stay at the Riverside Hotel - No, this is optional. However, as we strongly suggest that you not drink and drive…. It is a great place to stay and enjoy the entire weekend. If you book your hotel through our group, you will also get a discount on the parking rate. If you decide not to stay at the Riverside, and come only for the day, you can also take advantage of the discounted day parking rate. Make sure to mention that you are with our group.

Are there any activities on Sunday, May 21st? Many people plan a brunch for Sunday on one of the great places on Las Olas. We are trying to arrange a discount and will advise. This is optional and not included in registration fees.

Any questions, let me know: [email protected] Link to Register and Order Tickets: https://barefootchildrenphc.com/2017-water-taxi-pub-crawl/

Treetop Flyer By V.P. Craig Holmes We made another winter, we’ll remember our winters are a couple days that are cooler than normal and we lose daylight. I think the loss of daylight is the worst. Several years ago I would think of winter as rough seas and calm seas for the summer, but now it’s the loss of daylight. Either way, Laurie and I are coming home to the daylight yahoo. Laurie and I headed over to Port Charlotte for New Years Eve party with Steve Tolliver and the Trop Rock Junkies. We stayed on for New Year’s day pool party and what an awesome pool party it was, just one great weekend. We had an awe-some time with the pholks from The Villages and all of the other people that made it. I hope every-one that made the re-gifting had a great time, a new and unique venue. One definitely needed good navigational skills to drive to the venue. We had our picnic a month back or so, I sure hope that everyone had a cool time. Food was awesome and the socializing was phun. Who can wait for next year, yea mon. Laurie and I missed MOTB, and again sad that we did. We missed a bunch of great phriends. There was a Seafood Fest down in Marathon. Yep Laurie and I made it down there, on the way down Laurie put a shout out for any locals down that may be also attend-ing and yep, low and behold we had a couple of Key West phriends working the Conch Wurst booth. Something I never had before and they were really good, Conch sausage sandwich, totally awesome. Everything down there was great, the Conch fritters, Conch salad was fresh and awe-some and lobster was really great. We have a couple of phriends later that day, were getting the lobsters for $5.00 a pop, that is awesome. Last week Laurie and I made it down to Islamorada Moose Seafood Fest, that was very good music and good food. Then joined a Jim and Olga for a beer and wine then headed over to the Pilot house and had dinner with Video Dave from Key Lar-go and phriend.

Page 4 Another BFC Newsletter swings around, Oh how time flies while were all having so much fun! Just a few months into the New Year and the months ahead are also shaping up to be too much fun, with Buffett concerts in our future (finally!), BFC’s Annual Pub-crawl, phlockings and all. Excited and tired just thinking about it all! I would like to remind members to mark their calendars, ‘Save a Date’ for two events --- Saturday, August 19th, Craig & I will host ‘The Second Annual Movie Night for Alzheimer’s at The Holmes Tiki Hut Patio’. All who attended the first will tell you the fun we had, despite the rain and lightning show. We nestled together under the canopies and the show went on. We will be planning another fun event and we hope everyone will come. If anyone has a movie suggestion, feel free to let us know. Watch for further details to be announced early summer. Then the main event --- Saturday, October 21st I will chair a team for the 2017 Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the Broward Walk. Please NOTE: LOCATION CHANGE… This year the event will be at the Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Bummer I know, Craig & I cannot possibly see why this location was chosen over walking along the Hollywood Broadwalk, viewing the beautiful ocean and all; BUT, I know my Parrot Head friends will make it great fun. Soon I will register our team on the official Alzheimer’s website and en-courage those that would like to donate or participate to join our team. Additional details will follow from the club. Thank you, Laurie Holmes

Notes from Laurie By Laurie Holmes

Treetop Flyer continued By V.P. Craig Holmes Hey I heard that Jimmy Buffett is going to be into town. Yahoo, I believe we’ll be in West Palm Beach at the Perfect Vodka Amphitheatre, May 16, yep a couple days before the Water Taxi Pub Crawl and yes it is a school night, get there early for the tailgating, it is always a great time. WPB Parrot Heads are firing up the grill and having a feeding frenzy for everyone and taking small donations for a worthy charity. Laurie and I will be miss-ing Jimmy Buffett in Orlando, but I also heard that Jimmy Buffett is going to be in Tampa a couple weeks later, how cool, June 3 and not a school night, yahoo. Laurie and I will be at that one too. Tampa has awesome tailgat-ing parties. The first one that Laurie and I made it to, they had a corral of motor couches with local trop rock singers including John Frinzi, John Patti and I believe that Jimi Pappas was there tooo, plus others. The following year they had the Trop Rock Junkies playing. Always phun at the tailgating. I have heard stories of people playing really hard early and not so much later, so always pace yourself. Thinking of the Water Taxi Pub Crawl, did you get your registration in, I sure hope you’re not going to miss this, a phun event. Bring out your best Pirate garments for an evening of arrrrrr’s and someone told me that Lynley Tolls is going to be the entertainer for Friday evening. You should remember her from several years ago, when she came down with Rob as the Calypso Nuts and played at our Taste of Parrotdize. Lynley and Rob have been playing at the Conch Re-public Restaurant down in Key West during MOTM, in the afternoon for years. Saturday I heard that Catfish Hunter will be singing and he is local. I’m sure everyone has heard of Howard Livingston and Mile Marker 24 Band, just 1 Saturday evening last year he raised over $30,000.00. Laurie and I will be heading down to Key West June 8th and return home June 11th for MMITK a Howard Livingston and Southernmost Coconut Casta-ways event. I started going down in 2011 and have not missed it since. Always an awesome event for a worthy charity. Picture is Mark at the pool party down at MMITK, and I believe Dave Mckenney was the musi-cian playing at poolside. Mark your calendars for Au-gust 19th, Laurie and I are going to host our 2nd Annu-al Holmes Tiki Hut movie night benefitting “find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease”. Somewhere in the summer Laurie and I are going to have a clam bake or some-thing, keep your ears open to that parrot head telegraph line for details.

Useless Shakers of Salt From Your Club Secretary By Roland Del Form Page 5

WHY DOES POLLY WANT A CRACKER This is age old question, just as important as the one - “Why did the chicken cross the road”. However, it’s a question, who’s answer has been pondered on by many a scholar and drunks in the Florida Keys alike. As Club Secretary, I thought I might provide some light on the subject for your knowledge and future reference should you, one day, be that drunk at the end of bar. A good place to start might be – what kind of cracker did Polly want? There's soda crackers, Ritz crackers; wheat thins; Town House; water biscuits; animal crackers; cream crackers; Maltose crackers, Mein gon crackers; Oatcake crack-ers; Captain’s wafer crackers, Carr’s crackers; Cheez-it crackers; Club crackers; Crown Pilot crackers; Triscuit crackers; Pepperidge Farm crackers; Oyster crack-ers; (HOLD IT) (Think I just heard someone yell “Would you STOP naming crack-ers). Guess that will just remain a question for further discussion. We once had a balla par-rot and all she liked was cracked ice and rum cake!!! OK, now that I’m back on track. While there are a number of sources that attribute the origin of this phrase to R.L. Stevenson's Treasure Island (pub. 1883), or alternatively, to the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco, c. 1876) which used it as a popular slogan, neither of them appears to be the right one, since "Polly want a cracker" can be verified to have been in use even before these dates. An earlier, entry in a in The Knickerbocker (or, New-York Monthly) magazine, Volume 34, in 1849 found an For Sale ad with the following: a poll parrot, cheap. She says a remarka-ble variety of words and phrases cries “fe foe” and “you rascal” and “polly wants a cracker” and would remain with us but for her having been brought up with a now dead sea-captain. She is profane and swears too much for me, and having children in the family we must part with her. She will be sold at a bargain and hope that the buyer will use their skill to break her of the habit. Her feathers are green and while and she’s 25 years old but will live to 100. An 1848, cartoon showed a boy is ready to crack the skull of the parrot open, presumably for annoying him for repeatedly asking him for a cracker. One can assume from this to make a connection between the use of crackers on ships (as long-lasting food) and perhaps parrots being on board as well. At any rate, they conclude that even in 1848, parrots named Polly wanted crackers and that the phrase might have been commonly used. I further note that since cracker biscuits were invented in 1801 (or perhaps earlier in 1792) the phrase may have even earlier origins. In conclusion, there is no concrete proof of the exact origin of the phrase and this exercise was quite pointless; but, I wouldn't have it any other way, I'm not a parrot-fancier, but I sus-pect it may be easier to get a parrot to give a recognizable rendition of the word "cracker" than the word "seed". Keep in mind that parrots have no concept of the meaning of whatev-er it says - after all, it is a “bird-brain”. Okay - I know if you read this far - you sailors would say "Arrggghhhh!", but the point is they probably wouldn't have seed on board or maybe they did? Am sure you will all now be looking forward to my next subject: Why is the parrot named Polly?

Your Secretary, Ron

Grilled Guava Cornish Hen Ingredients 1 Cornish hen per person for big eaters. ½ jar of Guava jelly or Guava paste (Paste takes longer to break loose) ½ inch of grated ginger 3 cloves of garlic grated 1 cup of fresh Orange Juice or Tropicana, If using fresh OJ also grate the rind for

Instructions The cut the Cornish spine backbone, with kitchen shears cut the spine out so the

hen will lay flat on the grill. Preheat grill, I use gas but charcoal will work fine, coals maybe cool by the time

the hen is done. Season the hen with salt, pepper, and I like Butt Naked or Mike’s seasoning. Add the guava jelly, oj, ginger, garlic, soy sauce and vinegar to a sauce pan had

heat up When the grill is preheated put the Cornish hen down with inside down and skin

and use indirect heat now. When you see the leg and thigh and wings pull away from the rest of the hen,

you are ready to eat.
