Kyley, Hydey and Shane Storey and new addition Cody the goat at the Out-back Pioneer Centre at Slygo near Jericho.

New tourist attraction takes shapeTwenty kilometres from Jericho

on the Blackall-Jericho Road, the district’s latest tourist attraction is being developed by Shane and Kyley Storey.

Until recently Shane and Kyley ran the Universal Store and a museum in Jericho, but found the space wasn’t big enough to contain the museum’s growing collection.

Shane said the idea of running a local museum came from a passion for rescuing historical items that would have otherwise been lost, with many of the museum’s items salvaged from properties and tips around the district.

“Often when people die, their next of kin throw out all their things- old photos and possessions,” Shane said.

“Then all that history’s gone, so we try and grab it to preserve it.”

Now based at their property Slygo, the Storeys have big plans for the Outback Pioneer Centre and have already done a substantial amount of work.

The museum is now housed in a homestead that used to be located at Mafeking near Jericho, but was previously transported out from England in the late nineteenth century.

The property is also home to a menagerie of animals including goats, dogs, horses, sheep, chickens, turkeys and a joey kangaroo.

Kyley said the animals were a large part of their life, and that the property was always willing to take in unwanted pets, particularly if people’s circumstances had changed and they were no longer able to care for them.

Many adventure travellers are in our region right now, enjoying great weather and all we have to offer in the way of hospitality and tourism. I believe the unhurried pace of life is of great advantage to us all and it is something the travellers revel in.

School holidays are over and teachers and students are commencing their studies once again. I am sure this term will be both exciting and interesting as we are now in the latter half of the year.

The art exhibition “Outback Impressions” by local artists is currently open at the Grassland Gallery in Tambo. This is the second “Outback Impressions” exhibition by local artists from our region. It is well worth the time to have a detailed look at the delightful art works offered by our talented artists. There are two new artists exhibiting which adds to the interest as well. Congratulations to all on a wonderful exhibition.

The disclosure of the carbon tax information on Sunday certainly has brought more questions than answers. It will have an impact on the operations of every local government and business in Australia. I

would like to know who the 500 businesses are who will be taxed significantly and why did the other 500 businesses get dropped off the register as the figure was originally 1000 businesses to be paying significant taxes.

It was also pleasing to see the ban on live exports finally lifted by the federal government. It remains to be seen if the industry can obtain permits from the Indonesian authorities to get underway again as soon as possible.

The Blackall Tambo Regional Council workforce continues to reconstruct the flood damaged road network. The process of obtaining funding for flood damage through the Queensland Reconstruction Authority has proved lengthy.

The 2011/2012 budget is well advanced and will be announced at the end of July. The Blackall Tambo Regional Council is working to have a balanced budget which will have minimal impact on ratepayers in the region. With a focus on sustainability, equity, accountability and transparency, our intention is to accomplish as much as possible with available funds.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

It may be cold outside but that’s not stopping the array of activities in Blackall, Tambo and the surrounding districts.

Last weekend’s Bee Gees concert apparentally drew a crowd of around 170 people and Tambo had its share of entertainment at Sunday’s art exhibition opening.

A little further afield Jericho was holding its monthly drive in movies on Saturday night. I went along and it was honestly a fantastic night out. I’d highly recommend it to anyone thinking of attending a future screening.

There was a good crowd of people to talk to during intermission, a

barbecue dinner and a sense from

old fashioned charm in the air.

Occasions like this just remind

me that although we may be far

from the city lights, there’s plenty

of first rate cultural experiences

around the district.

Central west high school students will get the chance to learn about careers in health when the health students from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the University of Queensland (UQ) visit schools early next week.

The QUT and UQ rural health club TROHPIQ, which stands for ‘Towards Rural and Outback Health Professionals in Queensland’, is comprised of students from medical, nursing and allied health degrees and aims to encourage students to work rurally after graduation.

From July 18-20, the club’s team consisting of Susan Mullen (Medicine and Surgery), Joshua Nicholls (Medicine and Surgery), Emily Moore (Speech Therapy), Melissa Cooke (Speech Therapy) and Sally Rouhan (Nursing/Midwifery) will be visiting schools

in the Central-West including Alpha, Barcaldine, Aramac, Tambo and Blackall.

The club will run scenarios and conduct practical workshops that provide the students with an understanding of the roles of the different health professionals.

Twice a year volunteer members of TROHPIQ with support from Health Workforce Queensland conduct visits to rural high schools to promote careers in health.

The club’s aim is to encourage high school students to consider careers in health and provide information on the different career pathways, as well as scholarships available for rural and indigenous students with research showing that students who grew up in the country are at least two times more likely to go back to rural areas to work.

A group of young Blackall dancers have been rehearsing hard this week in Brisbane in preparation for this weekend’s Creative Generations showcase which will see them perform along with students from across the state.

Creative Generations - State Schools Onstage will see 1500 state school students from across Queensland showcase their performing arts talent in the professionally produced event with shows on Friday and Saturday.

The performances will feature a 700-voice choir, a 65-piece symphony orchestra, 600 dancers

and solo vocalists aged from 12 to 18.

The Blackall dancers flew into Brisbane on Monday morning and have been busy preparing for the show with full day rehearsals on Wednesday and Thursday, as well as their own private rehearsals on Monday and Tuesday.

The group has also managed to find time enjoy the city lights with some highlights of week including going to the movies, visiting the surrealism exhibit “The Poetry Dreams from Paris” at the Gallery of Modern Art and shopping in the Queen Street Mall.

Blackall dancers in Creative Generations Human Ventures is taking

the next step in handing the Shockwave festival and Creative Pathways program back over to the Central West region and looking for a regional program coordinator.

The organisation is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic and proactive person based in the central west Queensland region for the role.

Brooke Newall from Human Ventures said the role was the first step in a three year plan to give the program a constant regional presence.

“We’re entering a transition phase where it’s about creating a strategy and delivering the program back into the community,” Ms Newall said.

The transition phase will take three years, at which time Human Ventures will re-evaluate their role in running the program.

Ms Newall said it would be nice to find a person within the Blackall Tambo region to take on the role, but that the position could equally be filled by someone in a different central west community.

“The position is not necessarily based in one community,” Ms Newall said.

“Once we’ve found a suitable person, we would then find a base for them to work out,” she said.

“We’re hoping for applications from across a range of communities.”

However, this did not mean that the Shockwave festival would relocate to another community, Ms Newall said.

“The home of Shockwave is in Blackall, and we have no plans to move the festival,” she said.

Applications for the position close Friday 5 August 2011.

Tambo Timberwolves compete in junior touch titles

SPORT ON THE BARCOOFortnightly Pony Club rally

In the space of eight weeks a group of young girls from Tambo have gone from never having played touch football to competing in the State Touch Junior Touch titles in Hervey Bay over the weekend.

For the Tambo Timberwolves under 10s team the titles were the first chance they had to play against other teams, some of whom played between two and four times a week.

The Tambo team consisted of six girls from Tambo, two girls from Charleville and one from Toowoomba.

Coach Lorelle Sankey, a touch fanatic, said she started the team after her own nine-year-old daughter complained about a lack of team sports in the town and asked Lorelle to teach her to play touch.

“She was desperate to be part of a team, so that’s where this all started,” Lorelle said.

Lorelle said competing in the state titles had been a fantastic experience for the girls, who had done well for their first competition.

“You can train all you want, but it doesn’t mean much until you get thrown into a competition,” Lorelle said.

“That’s where you really learn all the skills and rules.”

The team’s efforts showed in a number of close games with Timberwolves narrowly going down 4-2 to Noosa, 4-2 to Kingaroy, 3-2 to Brisbane and 2-1 to Hervey Bay.

The team was sponsored by the now defunct Tambo Junior Rugby League Club to buy a team uniform.

“Now that there isn’t a team any more, the club still wanted to keep the money in the town,” Lorelle said.

Lorelle said she hopes to co-

ordinate a few regional games for the team against Roma, Chinchilla, Dalby and Toowoomba in coming months.

“Whatever we can get, we’ll have a go at,” Lorelle said.

“These girls now could have more knowledge about touch than girls in Year Six or Seven,” she said.

Lorelle said distance naturally posed challenges for the team, as with any sporting team in the district.

“Darling Downs kids don’t have to travel three or four hours for a game, which makes it hard, but you have to try,” Lorelle said.

“Some of the players will be too old for the titles next year, but hopefully we’ll pick up a few more girls before then,” she said.

“We’re really trying to keep touch alive.”

New cook at Prince of Wales

Brendon Collins brings fifteen years experience cooking full time in hotels to his new position as the cook at the Prince of Wales Hotel.

There are new ideas on the menu at the Prince of Wales Hotel with the arrival of new cook Brendon Collins.

Brendon is an experienced cook, having worked most recently at the Purple Pub in Normanton.

Previously Brendon cooked at the Birdsville and Innamincka pubs for a total of five years, where during the winter months it wasn’t unusual to cook over 200 meals a night.

Brendon said he had cooked in pubs for around fifteen years full time and had also done it part time in his younger years.

“I have also tried cooking more upmarket food for lodges and five

star restaurants, but I just didn’t get into it,” Brendon said.

“I’m more interested in pub bistro, home style cooking that still looks good on the plate.”

Brendon said the dishes he enjoyed making most were curries and pasta dishes such as carbonara and amatriciana.

“Thai green curry is probably my favourite dish to make,” Brendon said.

Brendon said that although he had only arrived in Blackall on Sunday, he already had a good vibe about the town.

“Everyone seems very friendly and it’s all very easygoing and laidback,” he said.

The Blackall Poultry and Caged Bird Club will hold its first ever Poultry and Caged Bird Show this Saturday at the Blackall showgrounds with entries flocking in from around the district.

Club member Kaye Wood said the club was only formed at the end of last year as a low cost recreational activity for bird lovers in the district.

“The original idea was to share some information and build up some networks,” Kaye said.

Kaye said the club had already received entries from Blackall, Barcaldine, Longreach and Alpha, as well as further afield.

“I think it’s going to be a really good day for people just to get together and chat about their poultry and birds,” Kaye said.

“Anyone who has birds is also welcome to come and perhaps ask some questions and speak to people with experience with breeding and caring for poultry.”

The show entries will be judged by skilled judges, some with over twenty years of experience.

Judging will take place at 11am with community members welcome to view the exhibited birds from 1pm.

The event will include a backyard chook section and a junior section, and point of lay chickens will be available for sale.

Seven young people from Blackall and Tambo are receiving valuable assistance with their life goals thanks to the Blackall Tambo Education Group.

The group will give out over $8000 in grants to the prospective nurses, electricians, business managers and vets following their successful applications for help with their employment and studies.

The young people receiving non-cash grants are Alex Choyce, Kirsty Johnstone, Rebekah Richardson, Ellerah Campbell, Alexandria Bolton, Haylee Ogden and Lucinda Noble.

BTEG president Kaye Wood said it was pleasing to see some of the region’s youth taking up the opportunities presented by the group, and she encouraged others to apply for assistance too.

The grants given out this year will assist with textbook purchases, help pay rent and accommodation expenses, and go towards computer costs.

Kirsty Johnstone described the help she is to be given as “priceless”.

Currently in her fourth year of a vet science degree at James Cook University in Townsville, Kirsty said it had been very costly for her to relocate to north Queensland to study.

“Textbooks are $200 to $300 each, and every day I have coursework from 8 to 5, with

assignments and study on top of that,” she said.

“These sorts of hours make it really hard to get a job to support myself although I have done weekend work looking after the uni’s animals.

“On top of that I have to undertake 12 weeks of practical placements in vet clinics, which has to be done in holiday time when I could be working for money.”

Kirsty said the group’s assistance would help her greatly.

Similarly, Ali Bolton at Tambo said the BTEG assistance would remove some of the stress involved with university and allow her to concentrate on her studies.

She is in her first year of nursing at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba and is currently working in two jobs as well as studying.

“I want to go into surgery when I finish,” she said.

“I plan to get some city experience first and then come west.”

BTEG will assist Ali with textbooks and rental payments.

Also nursing at USQ is Rebekah Richardson, who has plans for midwifery when she completes her course.

“I like the idea of delivering babies, of helping another life into the world,” she said.

“The grant will help me to buy the necessary textbooks plus a computer, which will mean I won’t have to be traipsing off to the uni

library all the time.”Ellerah Campbell is in the third

year of an Applied Science degree as well as a certificate 4 in vet nursing, and said it had been a struggle to put herself through university study.

“The accommodation costs in Gatton are horrendous so it’s great that the town wants to help its young people,” she said.

Kaye Wood said that BTEG was designed to assist regional youth to achieve their goals, recognizing that those in rural and remote areas must often leave home, travel and live elsewhere, which comes at a high financial and emotional cost.

The group’s parent body, the Country Education Foundation of Australia provided assistance of over $820 000 nationwide this year.

Kaye said the group was looking forward to giving out further grants to young people in Blackall and Tambo and she encouraged people to get in touch for application forms.

C The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a highly successful state and local government partnership that supports professional and emerging professional artists and art practitioners living in regional Queensland. Established in 1991, the RADF program focuses on the development of quality art and arts practice for, and with regional communities. RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Councils to support local arts and culture.

The program funds one-off, short term projects that offer professional arts, culture and heritage opportunities. Our local council bids for an annual allocation of funding for the region from arts Queensland which is managed by Council and a committee of community volunteers.

Round one of this financial year funding is now open and applications close on July 27.

To celebrate RADF’s 20 year birthday, the Blackall Cultural Association is planning a display of past accomplishments from workshops that have been funded by RADF. This will be part of the

‘Gallery Day’ which is being held on November 4.

The association is appealing to students who have taken part in workshops to dig out their creations so RADF can be acknowledged for their contribution to the Arts in our town. Without RADF funding Blackall and Tambo would not be able to afford to employ the variety of tutors that have visited our towns over the last 20 years.

Workshops and projects have been presented in many areas of skill development and art forms: Painting in differing media, leadlighting, photography, furniture restoration and woodwork, upholstery, silversmithing, glass bead making, pottery, sewing and quilting, hebel sculpture and resin craft.

Blackall and Tambo will be joining to rejoice in the 20 year anniversary of the RADF program and to celebrate and appreciate the benefits it delivers.

Please contact Lorelei on 4657 6403 if you have anything to offer for display.

Back to Blackall

16-18 September

As in 1941, the “Welcome to Blackall” banner goes up again to welcome everyone back to a great weekend in the bush.

It is now only 10 weeks away, and accomodation is filling, so please take our advice to book now. We have the offer of other accomodation once motels and hotels are full, but some may be swags only! Maybe a bus could be organised to meet the train on Wednesday if numbers require. Tell us!

We are requesting that people advise the contacts below if you have friends, relatives, or just know of someone who is coming back. We need to know so we can cater for everyone! Also, if anyone has any photos that you would like to have displayed on our memories wall, please see below. Photos can be copied if you don’t want the originals to have blu-tac on them.

Cattle sale cancelledThe Blackall saleyards remained silent this

Thursday morning, with the cattle sale for the week cancelled due to lack of numbers.

Landmark agent and president of the Blackall Livestock Agents’ Association Paton Fitzsimons said current insecurities in the industry were causing general instability in the market.

“Prices are cheaper at the moment so producers are choosing to hold onto their cattle for a bit longer,” Paton said.

“The actual processors are also having trouble shifting the product at the moment, mainly in exports.”

Paton said he believed the decrease in prices was only temporary and that the market would pick back up again.

“Prices aren’t going to be what they were at the start of the year, but the lack of cattle will generate some increases in price,” Paton said.

“Markets fluctuate and it’s always been a numbers game so sales will be cancelled when there’s a lack of cattle,” he said.

“When there are not a lot of cattle on the market, we then might see an increase price, like what happened at the Roma Store sale earlier this week.”

The Longreach saleyards also cancelled their sale this week citing lack of cattle numbers.

“We’ve always had a lot of animals, and we would have them even if we weren’t doing this,” Kyley said.

Shane also has a large collection of salvaged wagons and carts collected from across the district which he is working on restoring.

Shane said he currently has about 20 wagons, with half of them at Slygo and the other half at his father’s place near Mackay.

“We want to build a shed to present them so we can have them on display undercover,” he said.

Visitors with self contained campervans can camp at the property’s 20 mile site where drovers used to camp, and plans are underway to establish other accommodation options.

The centre was officially opened on April 22 by Barcaldine mayor Rob Chandler but is still in development stages, with the Storeys hoping to have the attraction open for tours and fully operational by April 2012.

At present the attraction is gearing up for its first major event, a wagon trek in early September.

A convoy of wagons driven by the Townsville Harness Club will travel from Blackall to Slygo to raise money for Angel Flight.

The wagon trek will leave Blackall on August 31, with plans to travel along the railway corridor and part of the Blackall Jericho Road before reaching their final destination at Slygo on September 6.

Members of the Townsville Harness Club will be visiting Blackall this weekend to survey the route and get plans underway for the event.

Over 60 works of art produced largely from the Blackall-Tambo region made up the Tambo Arts Council’s Outback Inspirations, Twenty Eleven exhibition opened last Sunday at the Grassland Art Gallery.

Thirteen artists – Helen Sargood, Sally Campbell, Cassie Swanson, Kiralee Fox, Mylinda Rogers, Trish Arden, Marilyn Hobbs, Selina Courtice, Alison Shaw, Emily Ridley, Sally Cripps, Heather Wehl and Sharynn Brigg – contributed works.

Tutors brought to the region with Regional Arts Development Fund grants had a big impact on the paintings and glassware produced

for the exhibition.According to curator Cassie

Swanson, it was a delight to witness the growth of the showcased artists over the past year.

“We have been extremely fortunate to have been nurtured and supported by our community and visiting tutors,” she said.

“To find such wonderful talent in this isolated corner of central Queensland is a true inspiration.”

Former Tambo Shire Council mayor Dougal Davidson, speaking about that council’s initiative in developing the Grasslands complex, said the idea behind a gallery in the town was to encourage local people to explore

their skills, and he was pleased to see this coming true.

Dougal opened the exhibition and said he thought the standard of artwork on display was getting better every year.

He congratulated exhibition curator Cassie Swanson for all her work, saying that since she had arrived in Tambo in the early 2000s she had encouraged the district’s artists greatly.

“And the whole Swanson family has put their all into putting this day on,” he added.
