Whilesome towns in the Central West, including Longreach, Barcaldineand Charleville, will be visited bythe Q150 train, a small number oftowns have been selected as venuesto host the Q150 Shed event. TheShed entertainment venue hasbeen modelled as a replica of theIsis Downs woolshed, the largestin the southern hemisphere. Thereplicated shed will be transportedby road train to each of the selectedtowns, and is due to arrive in

Blackall in November. The Q150Shed will hold around 300 people, while many more will be able towatch and enjoy the performancesfrom around the exterior.

Blackall was rst on the agenda

At the works and nance meeting held in Tambo onWednesday, February 25, council was able to presentretiring water and sewerage ofcer Lawrie Doonar witha gift in appreciation of the 18 years service given to theformer Blackall Shire Council and to the Blackall-TamboRegional Council. Lawrie indicated that he wished tobe able to do some serious surng before undertaking any furtheremployment. Blackall-Tambo Regional councilors wished Lawrie wellfor the future. The corporate planning process continues with further councildiscussions and community information sessions planned forThursday and Friday in Tambo and Blackall respectively. Your input isvery important to the ultimate document which will take us all into thefuture. I hope to see you at the information sessions which have beenarranged for 3pm and 6pm in Tambo at the Shire Hall on Thursday,March 5. The Blackall Cultural Centre supper room will have sessionsat 1pm, 3pm and 6pm.Alarming increases in costs to Councils have been imposed over thepast few months with state government nancial audit fees increasingfrom a total of $54,000 for both previous shires to $139,000 for theBlackall-Tambo Regional Council. The escalation of the fees levied bythe Environmental Protection Agency has absolutely no relation to theprevious amounts charged. $4.000 now becomes $17,000 which is a4 fold increase. All Central Western councils are faced with similarnancial dilemmas, which will have a detrimental effect on theirbudget outcomes for the year. I am trying to nd the cost saving inthese charges and pray there are no more departments out there withaccounts such as these in the mail. Council has written to governmentto express their concern at these unreasonable charges and will puta resolution to all councils attending the Western Queensland localgovernment association meeting scheduled for April 2/3, for discussionand action.

The ecumenical pancake evening held at the Anglican Church was verypleasant for all attending. The pancakes, both savory and sweet, weredelicious, with compliments to the cooks! The pancake tossing wassomething to behold and the service held afterwards was uplifting.I was able to attend the Beef Up forum held at the Blackall CulturalCentre for a short while. The segment which I attended on new cutsfor rump steak and oyster blade was very interesting indeed. Theproducers attending for the entire program were impressed with thedepth of industry material presentedand enjoyed the social barbeque atthe close of the day.I was also able to attend the Q150auditions at the Blackall CulturalCentre on Monday morning; thetalented local performers will certainlyadd their unique western avour tothe program for the three nights thatthe Q150 Shed will be in Blackallon November 18/19/20. The Shed

is reminiscent of the Isis Downsshearing shed. With professional actsas well as our own local performerswe will certainly have a memorablecelebration for the 150th year of thestate of Queensland.Hot off the press: the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council has receivedfunding from the state government tocreate a sport and recreation plan forour region. This will enable council tolook to the future for the lifestyle andtness benet of the residents in ourcommunities in this most importantcomponent of our lives.

Mozart coming to Blackall through Co-Opera

Kyle awarded universityfoundation scholarshipThe Central West Youth Network

was hosted by the Blackall-TamboRegional Council CommunityServices on Thursday, February26 at the Blackall Cultural Centre.Service providers, youth workersand representatives attended fromBlackall, Tambo, Longreach andBarcaldine.

School captains of Blackall StateSchool, Shagun Gandhi and Harley

Kowald-Dawson spoke of some ofthe issues that the Blackall youthare facing. Other than sport andpart-time jobs after school, there was disappointed expressed atthe lack of organised activities for young people. They emphasisedthe need to have their own youthspace; somewhere to go on Fridayand Saturday nights. In the pastin Blackall, young people have metbehind the Blackall Memorial Hall with a supervisor over 18 yearsof age. The hall has since beenrefurbished and used for otherservices. Possible meeting places were discussed but consideredless than ideal.

Service providers who attendedthe meeting said that they wouldcontinue to look for a possiblespace for young people. The young people of Blackall were

also very keen to see the cinemaoperating again. There was lengthydiscussion of the possibility ofstudents using the facilities at thecinema to undertake Certicate

2 and Certicate 3 in Media and

Hospitality if it was operational. It was concluded that the buildingowner would have to be approachedto discuss the possibility of re-opening the cinema.

Hinzy and Mardi Noonan managed to mow elevenlawns in just one and a half days last week to raisemoney for the Victorian bush re appeal. They collected

a total of $280.Hinzy gives Mardi the credit for the idea of giving

Blackall the opportunity to mow and donate to theappeal at the same time.

The idea came to me when I was mowing my ownlawn, thinking about the loss of gardens in Victoria,as well as everything else, and what Hinzys HandyHelp could do to help, she said.

It is hard to imagine that for many families in Victoriathe simple task of mowing a lawn will be something of

a dream for quite a while. Unlike in Blackall where weare mowing once a week.

Both Mardi and Hinzy are grateful to all of theirregular customers and their new ones for supportingthe cause.

Skate park vandalism, disappointingCouncil infrastructure is not acceptable.

Someone had smashed the newly installed ood

light mounted over the ramps only days after it was

erected. The Blackall Police have also noted that

vandalism is being committed against the footings

    that support the roof posts.

These ongoing costs associated with repairing

damage are repaired at ratepayers costs and I am

sure the ratepayers of Blackall will not be happy to

x the costs of continued vandalism, said Lisa.

Police believe that skate park users would know

who has damaged the light and are most likely as

annoyed at this as other community members.

Police and Council request that any person with

information regarding the damage telephone the

    Police station on 4657 4200.

Police patrols of this location will continue with a

view to ensuring that the public spaces in Blackall

remain safe and enjoyable for all members of the

    community.
