Preamble

Comprehensive research is being carried out at all the branches of science and

enormous resources in terms of funds, equipment and manpower is being pooled.

However, the relevant engineering viz. micro-nano engineering to convert the

research in nano-science and nano-technology into product is a neglected area and

lot of resources are required. More than resources it is the innovative approach towards product development and packaging that needs to be addressed. This can

be achieved by collaboration, multi disciplinary team work and pooling of skills & knowledge. BARC has taken a pragmatic approach and has focused on micro-

nano-engineering and has been able to promote a culture of mission mode

development by collaborating with academia, institutes and national labs. It is now

envisaged to form a consortium of engineering institutes, to take up product development, more so meeting the societal and rural needs of emerging India

The approach of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) in pursuit of exploring

the field of micro-nanotechnology through collaboration, consortium and outsourcing by hand holding private parties is a welcome sign. The objective is to

enthuse by mentoring the faculty of engineering colleges to take up relevant

research in the advanced areas of Micro-Nanotechnology. The attempt will be to

address the needs of Society especially to the Rural Areas in a 'Collaborative Mode' and develop products and technologies in 'Mission Mode' by using knowledge base,

facilities and skill sets available in the country.

To begin with, the major areas of exploration will be health care, environment and

water, Rural relevant energy systems, human resource development in advance

technology areas, Agriculture and food processing spreading advance technology

at grass root level.

The first theme meeting was convened by BARC on 24th and 25th February 2012, was attended by number of faculty members from various engineering colleges.

Guidelines for conducting R&D activities in the thematic areas were given by various experts of above organizations. Subsequently four projects were

shortlisted for R & D through BRNS grant-in-aid. As a sequel of this meeting, the

second theme meeting is being organized jointly by BARC in collaboration with

WCE, Sangli at Sangli. The theme meeting will showcase the developments at BARC, IGCAR, RRCAT, IITK, IITB, IITD and National Labs and societal work being

pursued by these centers. The objectives of this meeting will be to conduct Brain Storming sessions among faculties of various Engineering colleges and scientists to

draw a roadmap for rural development through Micro-Nanotechnology and other

areas. Schemes of funding for R & D work will be discussed and considered.

The main focus of rural development is to take technology to rural masses. Efforts

with mentoring from institutes of repute like IITs, NITs, research organizations like

BARC, TIFR etc, collaboration amongst institutes, projects with definite deliverables with much larger enthusiasm, encouraging local population,

industries, NGOs and other stake holders will have to be appreciated. Rural development efforts taken by Mahatma Gandhi, Vinoba Bhave etc. from the

generation of freedom fighters and Dr. Baba Amte, Dr. Prakash Amte, Dr. Abhay Bang, and many others in the recent past have created history. The theme of the

rural development is to provide low cost and affordable technology to rural

masses. In this process, efforts are needed to rope-in industries, conditioning the

minds of youth in societal problem solving, linking education across layers etc.

There is a need for creation of ecosystem which will have unified development of the urban and rural population.

Projects sanctioned in 2012 by BRNS

1. Development of microbiosensor for rapid diagnosis of mycobacterium Tuberculosis (MTB) – Dr. D. S. Joshi

2. Design, development of manufacturing technology for indigenous Low cost dental implant – Dr. M.Mapara, MGMs University of Health Sciences, Mumbai

3. Photonic crystal waveguide based multiplexers for optical networks and sensor applications – Dr. S. K. Narayankhedkar, MGMs COE, Kamothe

4. Rasin Making process and energy audit – Dr. S. P. Chavan, WCE, Sangli

About the College

Walchand College of Engineering (WCE), Sangli, established in 1947, is a premier

engineering institution in Maharashtra and one of the oldest in the country. WCE is a government aided institution and well-known for academic quality of its

degree and diploma courses. Affiliated to Shivaji University Kolhapur, the degree programs of WCE have been conferred autonomous status since 2007. Since then

the college has upgraded its academic systems and adopted contemporary practices, like credit based semester system, continuous assessment and grading,

etc. Recently, it has yet again revamped its curricula and learning systems with

the active engagement of international faculty and experts. WCE faculty is actively

engaged in research activities funded by AICTE, DST, DRDO, BARC, industry, etc. and contributes in research publications. A large number of WCE alumni are

working in leadership positions in academia, government and industry in India and abroad. For details on WCE course offerings, please see www.walchandsangli.ac.in
