15 BARBAROSSASCENAJUO ORDER OF BATILE The tables below present the Orders of Battle for the Soviet and Axis Armies on the frontiers during the final moments before the campaign began on June 22, 1941. Each formation in the Order of Battle' is broken-out according to its superior formation: Army Group for the Axis, Military District and Army for the Soviets. Shown directly below the name of each superior formation are the number and type of counters from the War in the East game required to represent all the units comprising that formation. Because mountain units are not differen- tiated from regular infantry in the game, infantry counters must be used to represent them on the game map. This is the case also with the single German cavalry division. In addition, note that Rumanian cavalry brigades are represented with armored bri- gade counters; that Rumanian mountain, fort and marine brigades have been combined and are represented by infantry division equival- ents; and that the three Finnish brigades were also combined into an infantry division equi- valent. The resulting unit set-up may be used for either the Barbarossa Scenario or the Campaign Game of War in the East. The German Army OB was provided by Leo Niehorster; the Soviet OB, by Ed McCarthy; and the Finnish OB, by Col. George A. Rasula. It must be noted that the Soviet OB is 'the most controversial. Any individual wishing to add his knowledge to the matter, or seeking further information, can write to the authors in care of SPI. KEY TO ABBREVIATIONS: i = infantry: a = armored: m mechanized: mn = mountain: s = security: c = cavalry: r = rifle: t = tank. All Axis units are divisions unless otherwise noted. Bde = Brigade. German Wallen SS mechanized divisions have a letter in place of numerical designation. The abbre- viations: T = Totenkopf Division: DR = Das Reich Division: LAH = Leibstandarte Adolph Hitler Brigade: W = Wiking Division.
