Aphasia Think Tank Participant (September, 2007 to 2010). One of 15 invited participants from six

countries convened to examine current status of social approaches to managing aphasia and

defined directions for future research and practice, with sessions convened at the Pat Arato

Aphasia Center in Toronto, Canada. Work of the Think Tank continues to present. I am leading

an outcomes initiative.

AphasiaBank (2005 to present). In 2005, an international group of scholars met at Carnegie Mellon to

explore the feasibility of creating a data base of connected discourse from persons with

aphasia in order to enhance the research data base available and expand our understanding of

aphasia’s characteristics and impact. The efforts of the group resulted in national funding for

creating and maintaining the data base.

Aging Well Contest—with funding from a private donor, the Office for Studies on Aging sponsored an

Aging Well Writing Contest yearly from 2005 through 2008. Contest was open to submissions from

faculty, students, and staff at the University and uses reviewers from Butterfield Trails Village.

Alpha Phi Omega, Institutional contact faculty member for this honor society for students and

faculty interested in gerontology, 2006-2007.

With Co-Director Ro DiBrezzo, have served as primary liaison with community and state agencies

and initiatives related to aging.

Co-Directors Shadden and DiBrezzo also provide multiple workshops within the community and work

collaboratively with a variety of agencies on service projects. We also were funded for a Walton

Distinguished Doctoral Fello in Gerontology. We have had numerous presentations, community

workshops, and publications. We have submitted grants to a variety of national as well as local

Development of Resource Guide

Technology support services for persons with ALS – involves evaluating technology needs,

including travel to the home for those who cannot physically be transported to our clinic.

--Currently member of Patient Care Services Committee – the group is seeking affiliate status

with the national organization (ALSA). This is requiring us to develop all policies and procedures

and to identify a strategic plan that will allow for expansion of services across the entire state

of Arkansas.

Reflections Memory Care, Inc. Board Member, 2006 to 2008. This organization was created to develop a

unique residential and treatment facility for older adults with dementia in the Springdale level.

At present, there is no activity in the group because of funding challenges.

Area Agency on Aging – consultation and coordination of involvement in projects individually and in role

of Co-Director of Office for Studies on Aging

Stroke Support Group of Northwest Arkansas. Facilitator and Founder of this group beginning in 1982

and continuing to present. Currently believed to be the longest running support group in the

country, at least under leadership of the same individual.

Other activities:

Women’s Giving Circle grant for education for caregivers – with R. DiBrezzo set up (and conducted)

a series of workshops on topics relevant to caregivers and used remaining funds to conduct focus

groups for certified nursing assistants working in three residential facilities for the elderly.

Information from these workshops was summarized and provided to each agency to help improve

service delivery.

“Project PUSH: Using University Resources and External Funding to Support Senior Center Needs

for Exercise Programs.” Train the trainers workshop offered in April 2003 to services providers in

northwest Arkansas.

Over 150 community and inservice presentations to service organizations, health professionals,

educators, and parent/family/caregiver groups. Over 30 extended (multi-hour) workshops to area

service providers in professional groups ranging from speech-language pathology/audiology to social

workers, VA Medical Staff, mental health workers, certified nursing assistants, and other health

professionals. The majority of workshops addressed issues of aging and communication behaviors

and/or disorders, caregiving, and aging well, although additional topics include the impact of humor on

health, communication technologies, and others. Most presentations were designed to enhance service

provider knowledge of how to communicate with or serve older individuals with communication

disorders or to empower those living with communication disorders.
