The better known among these are Bara Gali, Kalabagh, Nathia Gali, Ghora Gali & Changla Gali, collectively known as Gulliyat. These Himalayan hills stations were developed directly as a result of British imperial rule in India. The development and characteristics of these hill stations can largely be accounted for by two explanatory factors: their non-indigenous origin and temporary nature of their function. For the larger part of their colonial history , their principal function was to act as summer resorts for European population living in the hotter climate of the plains. Simultaneously, however hill stations were also built to accommodate cantonments or mi litary camps established for political and strategic reasons. Bara Gali, one of the prettiest among these hill stations, is situated at a distance of about thirty kilo meters from Abbottabad, covering an area of 60 acres, with a height ranging between 7000 to 9000 feet, above sea level. It is on a thick-forested spur of a hill with commanding views of the varying scenery, and overlooking the plains of the Punjab toward south. Turning round towards east one beholds the beautiful peak of Miranjani (1000 ft appox.) the highest in Guliyat. One of the main attractions of the Bara Gali campus is the numerous walks to the neighboring peaks and villages. A trip to Kalabagh, Nathia Gali and Ayubia, by the old bridle road is enchanting and refreshing. Like most of other hill stations in Hazara, Bara Gali is about hundred years old. Its first barrack was probably built in 1912. It was used by British soldiers till the emergence of Pakistan in 1947. In August 1965, Bara Gali Campus was handed over to the University of Peshawar. Since then it is used as Summer Campus of the University. It is a hub of academic activities particularly in summer. The various Departments of the University of Peshawar are holding national and International conferences, seminars, training workshops and symposiums in summer season. It has electricity, water supply and limited accommodation for the employees of the Peshawar University during the summer season. About 9 kms from Bara Gali, on the main abbottabad- Murree road is the delightful town of Nathia Gali, Which is quite a busy place to which great folk from distant places come to enjoy, and buy and sell goods. It has all sorts of accommodation for visitors and tourists. VENUE OF THE CONFERENCE

BARAGALI SUMMER CAMPUS

University of Peshawar

During the nineteenth century a number of small hill-stations sprang up on either side of the Abbottabad- Murree road, on the slopes of the outer Himalayas. The better known among these are Bara Gali, Kalabagh, Nathia Gali, Ghora Gali & Changla Gali, collectively known as Gulliyat. ABOUT CDPM

Established with a vision to contribute towards national integration and consolidation and help overcome the sense of forlornness and alienation in vulnerable communities, the Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management (CDPM), University of Peshawar is efficiently playing its due role in research, training and education in the field of Disaster Management. This newly established Centre, which was inaugurated by the worthy Chancellor of the University of Peshawar and the Governor of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (the then NWFP), is the first of its kind in the public sector universities of Pakistan. Mandated for Disaster Education, Research and Policy Advice to the government, the pioneering CDPM is readily moving ahead in the field. The CDPM has initiated the country's first ever academic programme regarding Disaster Management in the shape of a postgraduate diploma in Disaster Preparedness and Management (DPM), which is overwhelmed by the academicians and professionals working in the field. The CDPM is also aiming at the launch of M.Phil. and Ph.D programmes, which would be more specialized research based programmes in the field of Disaster Management.Having the belief that no single organization could work efficiently for development in isolation, the CDPM has been focusing on the establishment of linkages with the national and international organizations and with line agencies since its establishment. In this connection, the CDPM has developed appreciable working relations with a number of organizations of sound repute, namely the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ); International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Nepal; Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Pakistan; Rescue 1122 Punjab; Asian Universities Network for Environment and Disaster Management (AUEDM),Kyoto, Japan; Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC),Thailand; SAARC Disaster Management Centre (SDMC), New Delhi, India; and Disaster Development Centre (DDC), University of Northumbria, New Castle, UK; and Swiss Intercooperation (IC) Pakistan etc. As a result of these collaborative efforts, the CDPM has succeeded to organize advocacy events of higher level, most prominent of which are the Disaster Management Exhibition (DME 2009), in which around 40 local, national and international organizations from the field actively participated. In the sequel the CDPM organized the First International Disaster Management Conference (IDMC 2009) with the theme of “Integrating Disaster Management and Climate Change Adaptation into Policy Making”. Based on the performance of CDPM in the short span since its establishment, it is envisaged that it would efficiently play its due role in the future as well and would focus on the strengthening of working relationships with the rest of the stakeholders for the sake of enhanced coordination and optimal utilization of resources.

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the conference is to provide a platform to exchange views on how to mainstream the practices of disaster management into development.! CDPM via the conference aims at providing a platform for the

integration of disaster Management and Climate Change Adaptation into Policy Making.

! Through the conference CDPM would like to ? Bridge the communication gap amongst the policy

makers, disaster managers, academia and researchers.? Assess the possibility of implementation of various case

studies in Pakistan and in other parts of the region. ? Review the role of good governance in Disaster Risk
