3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

– Romans 6:3-4.

26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

– Galatians 3:26-27.

To properly define “baptism” it is important to understand the difference between a “Translation” and “Transliteration.”

• “Translation” – “a rendering of something into another language or into one’s own language from another” – (Webster).

• “Transliteration.” - “to change (letters, words, etc.) into corresponding characters of another alphabet or language” – (Webster).

The word “Baptism” is not a translation but a transliteration from Greek…

mean?

“consisting of the processes of immersion, submersion and emergence.” – (Vine).

“to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet)” – (Strongs).

- Romans 6:3-4.

To answer the question of what baptism does, we should not look to the wisdom of men but to the word of God.

"It is most likely that in the Apostolic age when there was but "one Lord, one faith, and one baptism," and no differing denominations existed, the baptism of a convert by that very act constituted him a member of the church, and at once endowed him with all the rights and privileges of full membership. In that sense, 'baptism was the door into the church.' Now, it is different..."

To answer the question of what baptism does, we should not look to the wisdom of men but to the word of God.

“The ordinance of baptism by a burial with Christ should be observed as commanded in the Scriptures, by all who have repented and in their hearts have truly believed in Christ as Savior and Lord. In so doing, they have the body washed in pure water as an outward symbol of cleansing, while their heart has already been sprinkled with the blood of Christ as an inner cleansing.”

20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.21 There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, - I Peter 3:20-21."He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
