AEROTROPOLIS

The term “Aerotropolis” which means an airport city has been popularized by American academic, Dr. John Kasarda to explain the fact that they are actually cities in which the layout, infrastructure and the economy are centered around an Airport.

“AEROTROPOLIS” - THE CONCEPT

“Airports are much more than aviation infrastructures. They have become multimodal, multifunctional enterprises generating considerable commercial development within and well

beyond their boundaries” – Dr. John D. Kasarda

Precedence by way of aircraft based activity in the past

Large contiguous land parcel without major geographical limitations

Strategic Location – connectivity to major roadways

Selectively Cultivated – predominantly mono crop and fallow land

No habitation on site earmarked for project

Geo-physical suitability

Scope for future expansion

No Forest land

AIRPORTTRAFFIC FORECAST

Page 16: Bapl Presentation

Traffic Forecast Methodology

4 Step process to determine Durgapur’s potential pax traffic at sector level.

1 Air Passenger Estimates

Determine no. of air passengers from Durgapur’s catchment area now flying to/from Kolkata and Ranchi airports, whom we can convert to use Durgapur Airport.

2 Train Passenger Estimates

Calculate no. of existing train pax from Durgapur’s catchment whom we can convert to use Durgapur Airport.

3 Travel Agents’ Feedback

Obtain anecdotal feedback on travel demand to/from Durgapur through interviews with TA s based in Durgapur and the region.

4 Sector-level Traffic Forecast

Marry inputs from the desktop study and TA interviews to come up with traffic estimates between Durgapur and various cities.

Used 2009 figures as a base and grow these by 15% year-on-year to obtain projected 2012 traffic when Durgapur airport opens.

Page 17: Bapl Presentation

Total Estimated Pax at Durgapur

2-Way Annual Traffic at Durgapur estimated to be 370,290 pax in Year 1 (2012).

Twin with another destination to be viable

ATC COMPLEX

An unique conceptual design in the development of the ATC Complex. Its

uniqueness is in the integration of the Air Traffic Control, Administration,

Metrological and the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting unit into one single

building. This is a proprietary design for this development and is the

first of its kind for airport in India.

Other special feature is in the conceptual design for the utilities and the

use of treated ground water for potable water in the airport and the

incorporation of a sewerage treatment plant to treat waste water for re-use

thus achieving zero discharge from the site.
