COMMODORE’S CORNER Guy Sorensen, [email protected]

Sailing season is finally upon us! Looks like we have endured yet another winter and spring is right

around the corner, time to get underway. The membership meeting this month will be held at Big Ugly

Brewery, 1296 S Battlefield Blvd Suite 104, Chesapeake, VA 23322 and food will be available right next

door at 3 Girls Restaurant. Festivities start at 1800 (6:00) and will go on until the sea stories end.

For those of us in Broad Bay Sailing Association that race our seasons are about to kick off! Little Creek

starts off their spring series Wednesday, April 4th but not before the March 31st 2017 awards and 2018

kickoff party. Please contact Randy Goodman for information regarding Little Creek racing and any

questions you may have. Willoughby Racers annual Skipper/Crew party is going to be held at their

sponsors brewery, Bold Mariner Brewing, 2409 Bowdens Ferry Rd, Norfolk, VA 23508, March 22 at 1830

(6:30). Racing for Willoughby Racers starts Thursday, April 5th. Please contact Robert Duncan for

information regarding Willoughby Racers. I would like to encourage you all to get involved in the racing

series offered within our association. If you are a current racer please extend invitations to other

members to join you on the course! If you are curious about racing and are currently not part of a crew

walk the docks on a Wednesday or Thursday, I am certain you will get a ride!

Our Sock Burning party is scheduled for April 8th at 1530 (3:30) and will be hosted by Cindy Lee and Eric

Fee. The party will at Cindy Lee's home located at 722 W Ocean View Ave, Norfolk, Va. I can't wait to

toss a pair of socks into the fire and welcome summer! Please feel free to bring your favorite beverage

to share and finger foods that we can share as we burn socks and tell stories. The sunsets from

Willoughby beach are spectacular so we are in for a treat. There will be a Conch Blowing at sunset as

well as one to start the festivities. Additional parking can be done so at the parking lot next to the Ocean

View pier, it is short walk west to Cindy's house, it's prettier if you take the beach route! Thank you,

Cindy Lee, for hosting us.

The BBSA winter cruise in the BVI's was a smashing success. I personally would like to say Thank You to

Jean Pattenaude and Connie Motley for organizing such a wonderful time. We managed to get 711 nm

under the hulls of the s/v Rumba. Chris and Kim Schott joined in the fun on board the s/v Tchao. It was

great to have the younger crowd around. When I say younger I mean the kids! The s/v Tchao had 4 of

them under the age of 14! Also, in the floatilla was the legendary s/v Freckled Parrot. Al and Connie's

experience in the BVI's was very helpful to all. We were able to celebrate Connie's retirement at Capt

Michael Beans pirate party in Leverick Bay, what happens there stays there "RRRRRRR" (except for the

pictures leaked on Facebook)! While in Anegada we were joined at dinner at the Wonky Dog by Sir

Richard Branson. He was a very nice chap and took pictures with all that wanted them. Sir Richard

engaged in conversation and danced on the table, pretty down to earth! It was indeed a special trip with

excellent weather, great destinations, spectacular views and even better company! The islands are still

in an incredible state of repair from the hurricanes. Once you get off the beaten path the devastation

from the hurricanes were overwhelming. Many places are completely gone and the struggle to rebuild is

real but with that being said the ports are open, the drinks are cold, the people are welcoming and very

appreciative!

I apologize on the delay in getting this out. There was some culture shock in coming back from the

beauty of the Caribbean Sea to cold and rain of Norfolk. Alas, sailing season is upon us and the air and

water temperatures are on the rise. Make Friends and take them Sailing!!

See you on the Water,

Guy

RACING NEWS Scott Almond, [email protected]

Jerry Pattenaude, [email protected]

The 2018 Southern Bay Racing calendar is posted on the lower right-hand corner of our homepage:

www.broadbaysailing.org; look for “2018 Racing Schedule”.

The first big-boat races of the season are about a month away as Little Creek starts their Wednesday

Night Series on April 4th and Willoughby starts their series the next day. Keep your eyes on our website

for registration details.

There is still time to register for the upcoming race committee workshop on March 10th. Southern Bay

Racing News You Can Use is presenting a Murphy Seminar: Nuts & Bolts for Race Committees. The

seminar is entitled, “Bearings and Angles and Numbers, Oh My!” and will cover starting lines, gates,

offset legs, finish lines, and other places where numbers are important, but need not be daunting. More

information is in this Banter or on our website, www.broadbaysailing.org. This will be a great workshop

for regular race committee volunteers as well as those who have to pull their obligatory duty for their

weekly beer can series; LCSA and Willoughby Racers are strongly encouraged to attend!

Don't forget to finish up the following applications/renewals before the prep flag drops:

US Sailing – as a member of BBSA, you get a discount on your membership:

https://www1.ussailing.org/membership/MPP/Default.aspx?ycid=108856C

CBYRA – for eligibility in their season long High Point competition; the Southern Bay has its own division

(Region IV) for trophies.

https://www.regattanetwork.com/membermgmt/CBYRA/membership_registration_start.php

PHRF of Chesapeake for your Valid Rating – a necessary evil for racing (even if you are a Cruiser or a

beer-can racer). http://www.phrfchesbay.org/. Also, please be sure to put BBSA as your primary club to

be sure you are represented at the PHRF Annual Meeting of the Delegates. Willoughby Racers and Little

Creek Sailing Association are NOT member clubs of PHRF of the Chesapeake and are not represented at

the Annual Meeting, so do not put them down as your primary club on this application.

CCV – Their racing membership automatically enters you in all of their races for the season (except for

Southern Bay Race Week); saves time, money, and headaches!!

At least join as a club member to get your copy of the annual racing bible (the CCV Racing Guide) to have

information on every significant race in this area. Online application is here:

http://ccvracing.us/membership-registration/

Southern Bay Race Week (June 1st – 3rd) – It’s not too soon to get registered in the most competitive

CRUISING NEWS Ed and Aimee Darling, [email protected]

Attention all Cruisers! Cruising season is just around the corner. I know it is still winter, but spring is just

a few weeks away, the air is getting warmer, and it is time to start planning your summer cruises. With

this in mind, we had a combined cruising meeting at Hampton Yacht Club on February 11 with a

wonderful turn-out. There are over twenty cruises that have been put on the calendar for this upcoming

season! So, you are bound to find a few that work for you and your crew. On the next page you will find

the dates, location, and cruising captain for each cruise. Please contact the cruise captain to let them

know that you are interested in their cruise so that they can begin planning.

Yorktown River Walk

April 27-29

We are kicking off the cruising season with a sail to Yorktown River Walk on April 27-29. It is a great sail

to a fun location. The marina is in good shape, can accommodate large boats, and has excellent facilities.

Yorktown is loaded with history, cute restaurants, and even a beach! And, for all you pirates, bring your

pirate garb, as it is the weekend that “Pirates invade Yorktown”. Plus, Saturday is the Farmers Market

with a variety of vendors, live music, and food trucks. It is a fun weekend for both kids and adults! Ed

and I will be hosting cocktail hour at our boat Saturday evening around 5:00. Let us know if you are

interested! Contact Aimee at [email protected] or Ed at [email protected].

Salty Dawgs Have Fun! Join Us this Summer!

If you are headed up the coast this summer, two great rallies can add to the fun (and safety) of your

adventure. The Salty Dawg Sailing Association is inviting all sailors to join a cruise-in-company from the

Chesapeake to Maine and then a second rally from Maine to Nova Scotia.

Enjoy the cool weather, beauty, and flavors of Maine and then escape the lobster pots to journey to the

land of Celtic music on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton. Some cruisers will join us in the Chesapeake Bay and

follow the route of both rallies to the Bras d’Or Lakes. Others will join us along the way.

The Salty Dawg Rally to Maine will leave the Chesapeake Bay on July 10; the Rally to Nova Scotia will

leave Rockland, ME on August 8. Stops along the way to enjoy quaint villages, local cuisine, and

maritime lore are part of each rally. Registration is now open for both events. For more information,

visit the Salty Dawg Sailing Association web site at http://www.saltydawgsailing.org. Sign up now!

Ship’s Store News: Bev Borberg, (757)460-1051, [email protected]

It is time to start thinking about sailing and, of course, Burgees. I hope you will check yours out and if

needed ask for a replacement and most importantly fly the Burgee. I usually have them at meetings or I

can mail a Burgee to you. $25 whether mailed or picked up.

If you want a cap or shirt with BBSA logo and ship’s name embroidered on it, contact Sean Myers,

[email protected]. Tell him Bev suggested it. He does a good job.

BBSA Name Tags: Now is your opportunity to order a name tag. It has the BBSA Burgee

on it along with your name and, if applicable, your boat name. If this is

your first order, you get 2 for free. If it’s a replacement, then it’s

$10/each. The next order will take place in May. Here is a link to the

order form: https://form.jotform.com/71134870954157 Please email Mary Greblunas at [email protected] with any questions.

Eric Brinsfield wants capture BBSA events! Over the past year or so, I have served as the “unofficial” photographer for BBSA events. By the end of

this year, I realized that I only had pictures from events in which I participated. Thanks to Jerry

Pattenaude and Eric Fee, I was able to fill in many of the gaps when I produced the banquet slide show.

For this year, if you would like to have someone come to a specific BBSA event and take pictures, let me

know. If I am available (not sailing), I will try to come. If I am not available, I will see if we can find

another volunteer. Many members already take lots of photos, so I may be able to just recognize those

people and steal some shots. I can be reached at [email protected]
