3 Installation Steps

This chapter describes the steps used to install and configure the components of Banner® Integration for eLearning. There are three possible integration configurations:

• Banner is integrated with Luminis® Platform only. In this configuration, steps 3 and 10 are not performed.

• Banner is integrated with a learning management system (LMS) such as Blackboard’s CE Enterprise or Vista Enterprise. In this configuration, step 4 is not performed.

• Banner is integrated with both Luminis Platform and an LMS. In this configuration, all steps in this chapter are performed.

Before You Install

To gain a comprehensive understanding of Banner Integration for eLearning components and processing, review the data flows in the “Overview “chapter of the Banner Integration for eLearning Administration Guide.

Be sure to review “Pre-Installation Worksheet” on page 8. Before you begin this installation process, you should complete all checklist items for your Banner system and any partner systems that are part of your integration solution.

Single Sign-On

If you are integrating Banner with Luminis Platform and an LMS, you can implement single sign-on. This capability enables users of Banner self-service products and the LMS to log on once using the same user name and password. Refer to the Luminis Platform Installation Guide for specific instructions on setting up single sign-on between Luminis Platform, Banner, and your LMS.

Installation Steps

Use the following steps to install and configure the components of Banner Integration for eLearning.

2009 Banner Integration for eLearning 8.0 15Installation GuideInstallation Steps

Page 16: Banner Integration for eLearning - Bridgewater State … Banner Integration for eLearning 8.0 Installation Guide August 2009 Banner Integration for eLearning 8.0 3 Installation Guide

16

Step 1 Upgrade to Required Banner Releases

Begin the installation process by upgrading to the appropriate releases of all Banner software (Internet-Native Banner and self-service products) being integrated at your institution.

Verify that you have the most current software and documentation available by consulting the Integration Solutions Dependencies document available on the Customer Support Center. If you do not have the minimum versions required, you can download Banner software and documentation from the Customer Support Center. Refer to the appropriate documentation for specific instructions about each product installation.

NoteIf you do not license a particular product, you do not need to install it.

Step 2 Install and Configure the Luminis Message Broker

The Luminis Message Broker (LMB) is the communication link between Banner products and partner systems such as Blackboard. It requires a database to store Luminis Platform-specific log reports and site-specific setup information.

You can install the LMB on the same server where you are running Banner, or you can install it on a separate server.

Refer to the Luminis Message Broker (LMB) Installation and Administration Guide for installation instructions.

Step 3 Install Luminis Platform

NotePerform this step only if you are integrating Banner with Luminis Platform.

Consult the Integration Solutions Dependencies document, available on the Customer Support Center, to ensure that you have the correct releases of Luminis Platform for your contracted products. If you have not done so already, you can download the required Luminis Platform software and documentation from the Customer Support Center.

Ellucian recommends that you install Luminis Platform and all of its components on a dedicated server.

NoteDeployment of Luminis Platform to either prospective students or alumni users may require a modification to your licensing agreement. If you plan to use the software with either of these user communities, contact your Ellucian representative for further information.

Step 4 Install and Configure Blackboard’s CE Enterprise or Vista Enterprise

NotePerform this step only if you are integrating Banner with Blackboard products.

Consult Integration Solutions Dependencies, available on the Customer Support Center, to ensure that you have the correct releases of the LMS for your contracted products. After verifying correct releases of your products, refer to documentation for both Blackboard and Luminis Platform for details about integrating Luminis Platform with your LMS.

Implementing an LMS With Luminis Platform

Banner Integration for eLearning works most efficiently when Banner, Luminis Platform, and an LMS integrate as partners in the solution. Luminis Platform offers the following advantages:

• Single sign-on capabilities contribute to the unified digital community. Single sign-on enables seamless navigation from a central user interface to Banner self-service products as well as to products such as Blackboard’s. Single sign-on processing to your LMS is available only from the student's or faculty member's list of courses in Luminis Platform.

• The portal provided by Luminis Platform is where the institution can publish automated alerts as soon as grades go online, and where it can post reminders to students about such things as scholarship and tuition deadlines.

To enable Luminis Platform and Banner support in an LMS, you must enter information about your integrated environment and select the template to be used for course creation. If you choose a non-default template for course creation, you must also create and release Midterm and Final Grade columns.

Add the following parameter values to your Luminis Platform IV (or higher) configuration directory:

Parameter Definition

CPINUSE Specifies whether Luminis Platform is being used by your institution. Enter Y.

WEBCTINUSE Specifies whether Blackboard’s Vista Enterprise or CE Enterprise is implemented and in use at your institution. Enter Y.

18

Implementing an LMS Without Luminis Platform

If your institution decides not to take advantage of the benefits of integrating with Luminis Platform, you must perform the following steps:

1. Create a user account called lmg.

2. Configure your user navigation system so users can navigate from Banner self-service products to your LMS. Use the self-service configuration options detailed in “Using Web Tailor” in the Banner Web Tailor User Guide to achieve this transfer

When configured, a section title link in Student Schedules (Banner Student Self-Service and Banner Faculty and Advisor Self-Service) transfers the user to the LMS log-in page. You can configure Banner Student Self-Service and Banner Faculty and Advisor Self-Service so that the link from the Student (or Faculty) Schedule Detail is not displayed.

Step 5 Enable LDI Events

Use the Event Queue Name Definitions Form (GOREQNM) to enable the following events delivered in Banner Intcomp. The target system is LDI.

Step 6 Build Rules for Data Extraction

Refer to “Synchronized Data Elements” in the Banner Integration for eLearning Administration Guide for information on building the rules for data extraction in Banner.

WEBCTLOGIN Indicates the URL where your instance of Blackboard’s Vista Enterprise or CE Enterprise is installed.

Example: http://webctserver:port/webct/homearea/homearea

where, webctserver:port should be replaced with the correct value for your institution.

Step 7 Extract Banner Data

Use the Extract Process (ICGORLDI) to extract data for each partner system you plan to integrate with Banner. Refer to the extract matrix tables for ICGORLDI in the Banner Integration for eLearning Administration Guide for recommended settings to use with single and multiple partner products when you run ICGORLDI. Review the extract files for errors.

Step 8 Import Extract Files

Import the Banner XML extract files (created in the previous step) into Luminis Platform or a partner system using appropriate import procedures. Refer to Luminis Platform or partner documentation for details.

WarningAs with any large data import, this operation can be lengthy. The length of time depends on data and hardware configurations.

Step 9 Install and Configure the Learning Management Gateway

The Learning Management Gateway (LMG) is the software component used to transfer data between the Banner database and the Luminis Message Broker.

Refer to the Learning Management Gateway Installation Guide and perform all of the steps to install and configure the LMG.

Step 10 Set Up LMB Configuration for Blackboard’s LMS products

NotePerform this step only if you are integrating Banner with Blackboard products.

Refer to your LMS documentation for this step.

Step 11 Set Up Luminis for Processing LDI Events

Although changes communicated via LDI events might be received and processed successfully by LMB, the changes might not update data in the Luminis LDAP store. This might be due to an incorrect configuration setting.

Use the following steps to set up Luminis for processing LDI events.

1. Run the following command in Luminis:

• Banner is integrated with Luminis® Platform only.

• Banner is integrated with a learning management system (LMS) such as Blackboard’s CE Enterprise or Vista Enterprise.

• Banner is integrated with both Luminis Platform and an LMS.

Integration With Luminis Platform Only

Perform the following verification steps if you are integrating Banner with Luminis Platform only.

Step 1 Verify the Login to Luminis Platform

1. Log in to Luminis Platform using a username/password combination for a person contained in the extract.

2. Navigate through the system tabs and channels.

3. Verify that the name display is correct.

Step 2 Verify Single Sign-On From Luminis Platform to Banner Self-Service

1. Navigate to the Academic Services channel via the Integrated Services link.

At this point you are still in the Luminis Platform although you are looking at a menu template for the Banner self-service application.

2. Verify that the correct event data was created and written to the event queue. Use the Event Queue Record Maintenance Form (GOAEQRM) to review the event data.

3. Point your browser to Luminis Platform and log in as the person you just created. Ensure that the person has a valid user ID and PIN; if not, create one for the person using the Third Party Access Audit Form (GOATPAD). Verify that the correct name is displayed above the system tabs.

For information about synchronized events, refer to the Banner Integration for eLearning Administration Guide. This is only one of numerous tests you could and should perform for this step.

Step 4 Test Smart and Notify Events

1. In Banner, build the data that triggers an Add Hold Smart Event.

2. Verify that the correct event data was created and written to the event queue. Use the Event Queue Record Maintenance form (GOAEQRM) to review the event data. The event should be retrieved by the Event Dispatcher and successfully delivered to the Luminis Platform.

3. Point your browser to Luminis Platform, log in, and verify the receipt of your message.

• If the message delivery type is TMS, the message is displayed in the Personal Announcements channel.

• If the message delivery type is EMAIL, the message is delivered to the Luminis Platform e-mail box.

4. Navigate to the message (either personal announcement or e-mail message) and click the View Holds link.

You should be transferred to the student’s View Holds page in Banner Student Self-Service. The hold you just placed should be displayed. You have achieved single sign-on and authenticated to the Banner self-service applications.
