Banksia Bulletin Thursday 12th December 2013
Our Year 5 students had a wonderful time on their camp
at Sovereign Hill last week. They enjoyed learning about
the history of the Gold Rush era and participated in many
hands on activities which gave them the opportunity to
experience what life was like in the mid-1800s. Well done
to all our students, staff and volunteers on a great camp.
On Tuesday many of our Year 6 students attended the Government Schools state wide transition
day for 2014 Year 7s. It is a very exciting time for our exiting Year 6 students as they reflect on
their time at primary school and look ahead to a whole new phase of their education. We wish all
our Year 6 students the very best for their future and look forward to their Graduation Evening next
Tuesday 17 December.
As part of our in school transition program, next Monday 16 December all our current students
from Prep to Year 5 will participate in a “New Class, New Teacher” session. The students will get
to meet their new teacher/s for 2014 and find out where their 2014 classroom is located. The staff
allocation for the 2014 classes is attached to this newsletter.
We have a number of staff changes happening for 2014 with
some of our teachers leaving, new teachers coming on
board and staff returning from leave. We will be farewelling
the following teachers - Paula Phillips, Adrian Vitale, Laila
Contini and Joy Stanley. A big thank you to all of them and a
particularly big thank you to Joy who is retiring after a long
career in teaching, the last 24 years being at Mount Martha
PS. We thank Joy for her dedicated service to teaching and
her years at Mount Martha over the past two and half
decades – well done Joy on an amazing career.
We wish Sally Richardson all the best as she will be taking extended long service leave from the
commencement of next year. Our Education Support staff, Kerry Spiers, Julie Sutton and Lyn
Reed will be finishing at MMPS at the end of the year. We thank these teachers and support staff
for their valued contribution to Mount Martha Primary School this year and wish them well for the
future.
We will be welcoming four new teachers for 2014 – Danielle Howle, Darrel Hartwig, Jane Doye and
Justin Whelan. We will also be welcoming back Principal Judy Beckworth following her long
service leave this year. I will be returning to Mount Eliza Primary School as the Assistant Principal.
I have enjoyed my time as Acting Principal at MMPS and have appreciated the opportunity to work
with the students, staff and parents in such a terrific learning community. Thank you to everyone
for making my time at MMPS such a positive experience.
Last week those students who have participated in the
instrumental programs at MMPS performed in concerts over two
evenings. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to show
case their talent and proved to be a fitting culmination to their
year’s work in learning a musical instrument. Well done to all our
instrumental students on a top effort. SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
TONIGHT
We have a very full calendar over the next week as the school year draws to a close. Our final assembly will be held on Wednesday at
9.10am. We hope to see many parents, grandparents and friends attend our farewell assembly for the 2013 school year.
We look forward to an eventful and exciting week ahead to conclude a wonderful 2013 at Mount Martha Primary School.

2014 School Teaching Teams
IF YOU HAVE ANY SPARE SCHOOL SUPPLIES
We have a family at school that has a connection with The Kathleen Keegal Children’s Fund that funds St Anthony’s Children’s Home in Sri Lanka. If in sorting your children’s school supplies for 2014 you have any spare items at home that you do not require please place them in the box in the foyer near the office. These items will be added to a container of supplies being sent over to support these children in their education. Further information about this organisation can be found at www.kkcf.org. Thank you for your generosity. Karen Walker Assistant Principal
The KidsMatter team would like to extend their best wishes to all of our
Mt Martha families for a safe and happy Christmas. We look forward to
continuing our work in supporting student wellbeing in 2014.
FIRST AID NEWS
Medications If your child is leaving MMPS at the end of this year, please collect any medications from First Aid on the last day they are at school. Medications for children who will be remaining at MMPS may be collected or left in First Aid. If you decide to take them home, please remember to return them for the start of the school year.
Head Lice We have not been free of head lice this year! Could you please check your child’s hair for live eggs or lice over the holidays so that we can start 2014 head lice free.
Should you find any eggs or lice, there are two choices of treatment:
Chemical : Treat and comb with a head lice comb to remove the head lice and eggs; and repeat in 7 days.
Non-chemical: Use conditioner and comb with a head lice comb to remove the head lice and eggs and repeat every 2 days until no live lice have been found for 10 days.
Head lice take 14 – 17 days to mature so if you continue to comb each week you will remove the lice before they are able to lay more eggs and thus break the cycle.
Please find a ‘Frequently asked questions’ flyer about head lice attached to this newsletter.
Wishing you a very safe and happy holiday season.
Lorraine Stuart, First Aid Officer.

Family Maths Problems Here are some ways you can enjoy Maths with your family.
Making Jelly
You will need
A packet of jelly crystals
A measuring jug and jelly moulds or small dishes
Hot water
Spoon for stirring
What to do
With a helper, read the directions on the packet carefully and make the jelly.
Be very careful with the hot water!
Pour the jelly into jelly moulds or dishes or cups. Try to get them about the same size.
How many did you make?
If you were having a party next week for 20 children, how many packets of jelly would you need, using the same containers?
Draw a picture to show what you would need.
What’s your favourite jelly flavour? Colour it in.
Money Picture
You will need
some coins
What to do
Each person makes a shape using the coins, for example, a triangle, a square, a circle.
Guess how much each other’s shape is worth, then tell each other your guess.
Add up the value of your shape.
Which shape added up to the greatest value?
Something extra
Make the shape of a 50c coin using the coins. How many sides has it? What is you 50c coin shape worth?
Merry Christmas
You will need
paper and pen
What to do
Suppose that at Christmas time everybody in your family, including grandparents if you have them, gave each other a gift. If all these presents were piled under the Christmas tree, how many parcels would there be altogether?
Something extra
If there was a new baby in the family the following Christmas, how many gifts would there be under the Christmas tree then?

Year 6 Market Wrap Up
The energy was high during our unit of work on Economics. An extremely successful Year 6 Market was held in early November. Students, in self selected groups, had prepared business plans, met with business consultants, Bull, Nickeas and O’Connor, trialled products and services and determined pricing. After it was all over they analysed and reflected on the underlying Mathematical and Economic concepts involved including learning a whole new language in economics. They worked with decimals, percentages, used graphs to make comparisons between revenue, expenditure and profit, worked out the wages bill for their stall and discussed concepts around the reality of a business including costs involved and profits made.
The Year 6 Market of 2013 exceeded expectations, and with less students a greater profit was made this year than in the past two years. The students showed a wonderful sense of confidence and design to create a strong sense of community. Their branding and attention to detail really made it something else. We are very proud of the efforts that went into this year’s market. The total profit for the day was $7708.
The Year 6 group would like to thank the parents of our students for their input and support during the lead up to, and on the day of the market. You are amazing in the way that you support the endeavours of your children. The contribution of many families was extraordinary, allowing their children to run very professional stalls with many products being paid for in kind. To our school community thank you for getting behind us; without customers the market would not be such a success. To all the staff and mem-bers of the admin team thank you for your support too.
To thank our year 6 families for their hard work the end of year graduation celebration has been fully funded by the market for each student. A generous amount has also been sent to the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) who provide local support and resources through groups such as Breast Intentions on the Peninsula for women and their families who are consumed by this disease, (for more information you can go to http://www.bcna.org.au/. The remaining funds are being used to leave a legacy of the year 6 group with the school community. After consultation with students, teachers and the school leadership it has been decided that flag poles will be erected in Area C so that all future ceremonies of national significance can be held as a school community with the addition of a new pole and the Aboriginal Flag.
Once again thank you all for your support of this wonderful event. In particular to our amazing Year 6 students who put their heart and soul into it.
Despi O'Connor, Year 6 Teacher.
