In the open room, South’s 2D was multi showing either weak in majors or balanced 19-20. North’s 2S showed that he is ready to play up to 3H but when South showed his balanced 19-20 HCPs, he passed. West led a spade and over East’s Jack declarer won with the SA and returned a heart. East won the Ace and played back a spade. South took this trick as well and played back another heart. Now he was safe as he had entry in clubs to take one trick in hearts. 8 tricks were duly made. In the closed room, NS were in 3NT. There was no 9th trick available for declarer and that allowed Bangladesh to open their account with 5 IMPs.

North had another chance of winning with Ace and playing on diamonds to take a ruff, but he played small and now there was only one loser each in spade, heart and club and 2 diamond losers and the contract was made.

In closed room, South’s pre-emptive took its toll on the opponents, when in competition they reached 4S, which was duly doubled for 2 down and India got back 9 IMPs. It was interesting to note that if played correctly, 4H will make for NS.

In the open room, the bidding was normal and NS reached the optimum contract of 3C, which as the cards are placed was made with 3 overtricks.

In the closed room, there was a chance for NS to shine. South showed his maximum passed hand by re-doubling and could bid 2NT or 3NT, knowing that the major suits are well covered. 3NT makes without problems but South has to consider partner’s opening in the 3rd seat, which can be weak and hence passed. There was no swing on the board.

Open Room: West North East South Pass 3C Pass Pass All Pass North pre-empted and it was surprising to see East taking no action with his 5-5 in majors. West with a flat 4-3-3-3 hand could not take the risk of bidding and the declarer had easy time in making 9 tricks in clubs, losing a spade, 2 hearts and a diamond. The diamond loser going on the SK.

Closed Room: West North East South Pass Pass 1S Pass 2C(1) DBL 3S Pass 4S All Pass In the closed room, North did not make the pre-emptive bid in club and it was East who struck gold when he opened with 9 HCPs with his 5-5 in majors. West now showed his spade support by bidding 2C (drury) and EW reached the 4S contract.

South led the CA and declarer ruffed and played S10 and let it run. Next came a low diamond and South had to duck that as playing Ace wouldn’t have helped. Spade Ace was cashed and now declarer played on the hearts. Defenders could have ruffed the 3rd heart and cash the DA but when that was not done there were 12 tricks. That was a gain of 11 IMPs to Bangladesh.

In the open room, NS bid the hand well to reach the cold slam in hearts. The key bid was by South, when he bid 4C showing heart fit and mild slam interest. When North made a cue of diamond, South enquired the Key cards and bid the heart slam. There was nothing to play as there is only one diamond loser. In closed room, NS were happy to be in 4H making the same 12 tricks. That was 11 IMPs gain to Bangladesh.

Closed Room:

West North East South 1NT Pass 2C DBL 2S Pass 4S All Pass

In the closed room, the Indian NS bid to game and here again the lead was D6 and East after winning returned the diamond. As the declarer was in 4S, he finessed and was rewarded when it worked. He took out 2 rounds of trumps, cashed top hearts and went to dummy with SA and played the HJ. When the queen fell, he was home, ruffing one club in dummy and discarding one club on H10.

BANGLADESH won the match by 32-16.

West’s queen of diamonds takes the trick, so does the jack. South ruffs the third diamond, cashes three top spades (partner follows) and leads the heart queen. Partner wins with the king and switches to a small club; declarer wins with the ace. What is defender’s plan?

SOLUTION No time to think! South has five spade tricks, a club and, after successfully finessing against the jack, four hearts. Therefore, let West play the king of clubs to the ace, not minding the consequences. At worst, we are only giving up one overtrick.

Provided West plays the king without any hesitation, declarer will no doubt prefer the “sure” club finesse to uncertain one in hearts.

We take this opportunity to thank all the participants, officials for their co-operation in making these Championships a great Success. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL. We wish you a safe journey home. See you all again in 2021.
