From the District Secretary FOCUS: RBM PROJECT

Roll Back Malaria (RBM) project is a part-nership project with international agenciesto combat malaria in some of the most vul-nerable areas. In 2008, Y’s Men Internationalcollaborated with the International Federa-tion of the Red Cross and Red Crescent So-cieties (IFRC) to distribute 25,000 packagesin Sierra Leone.

The IFRC will continue as our partnerduring the 2010-2015 campaign to distributenets funded by Y’s Men International inSierra Leone, Kenya, Liberia and India.

The Roll Back Malaria project is directlyrelated to achieving the United Nations’Millennium Development Goal 6 by 2015.

Y’s Men International will collect500,000 CHF over five years (2010-2015) topurchase and distribute 65,000 packagescontaining long-lasting insecticidal mosquitonets (LLINs), insecticide re-treatment kits, immunizations, Vitamin A (or multiplemicronutrient) supplementation, and anti-malarial “blister packs” for managing feverat home.

MalariaMalaria is a parasitic disease transmitted bythe bite of infected mosquitoes. Once the firstsymptoms appear, malaria can kill very rap-idly — and often does. More than a millionpeople die of malaria each year, most of themchildren under five. In Africa, malaria is theleading cause of death among young children, killing a child every 30 seconds.

Long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets,if used properly, successfully preventmosquitoes from infecting people with thisdisease. Studies show that high levels ofinsecticide-treated net coverage can reducedeaths in children by as much as 20 per centfrom all causes, not just from malaria.

Call for actionY’s Men Clubs worldwide are encouraged torenew their efforts to combat this preventabledisease.

Rs. 350.00 can buy one anti-malariapackage that can save a child in India, SierraLeone, Kenya, or Liberia. Last year ourDistrict contributed 232 packages. Make sureyou participate in this special project this yeartoo through your home club.

Dear Y’s FriendsThe new Y’s year has commenced with theinstallation of the new office-bearers in theclubs of our District. While most of theclubs have carried out their installation, some of the active clubs are still to installtheir leaders and I am sure that they willhave been installed by the time ofpublication of this bulletin.

Now we have to get to the actualrunning of the clubs. The DG has comeout with an array of projects in which weat the District will guide and assist all theinterested clubs in undertaking suchprojects so that we can contribute to theneedy in the society at large and thusincrease the visibility of our organisationin Bangalore.

I will always bethere to assist theDG in his compre-hensive plan forour District. Allthe members andthe prospectivemembers can callme for any infor-mation or help re-quired by you in furthering the wellbeingof the Y’s movement in our District.

bottles and yogurt containers.Take used plastic, glass and paper to arecycling centre.Do not throw away food.Buy recycled paper products, forinstance for brochures and businesscards.Use less electricity: turn off lights whenyou leave a room, switch off your geyserafter the bath, switch over to CFL bulbs, check for leakages, don’t use your airconditioner at night... open yourwindows.Leave your car at home: walk to thestore, take the bus, car pool.Turn off the engine when you’remaking a delivery or waiting forsomeone.Buy fewer consumer goods.Make what you already have last longer:don’t throw it away... get it repaired!Adopt an attitude of appreciation andrespect in every action: you will thinktwice before wasting anything.Take a stand on ecological andconservation issues.Offset your carbon footprint bysupporting environmental initiatives.

What is your Carbon Footprint? Our Regional Director’s theme for the year is “Enrich the Environment” and, in thisconnection, he has exhorted all clubs and members to execute projects that wouldtake us one step away from ecological disaster. The RD also spoke about the importanceof reducing our carbon footprint, something that all of us can do every day withouthaving to make any major investments of time or money. All it takes is a bit of caringand re-examining how we conduct ourselves.Beginning August 4, supermarkets in Bangalore are charging for plastic bags to carryhome the purchases! Saying ‘no’ to plastic is becoming a reality. Many more suchsimple measures would be needed soon. So, getting used to the idea of beingresponsible for the planet by reducing our individual carbon footprint may not be abad idea after all.Given below are some tips on how to reduce our individual carbon footprint – Editor.

Page 2

Your carbon footprint is a measure of theeffect that your daily activities have on theenvironment, in terms of the amount ofgreenhouse gases you produce (measuredin units of carbon dioxide).

Some people refer to this as “ecologicalfootprint.”

You can get a fair idea of your carbonfootprint by using a carbon calculator. Sucha tool measures the emissions your lifestylegenerates, and shows you where you canchange your individual impact.

There are many practical steps we cantake to reduce our personal or businesscarbon footprint.

Recycle, Reuse, Reduce and Respect

When we consciously apply the 4 R’s, westart to create new habits and move towardsa more sustainable lifestyle that has fewerharmful consequences for mother Earth.

Use fewer plastic bags: take your ownbags to the grocery store; you don’t needa plastic bag to take home yourvegetables – a small cloth bag tuckedinto your pocket and a small walk go along way.Find a second use for empty juice

Menettes’ ColumnY’s Menettes at District Level?

Collaboration is the buzzword for theY’sdom in our District this year. Menettesare not far behind in this area too.Cooperation among Y’s Menettes at theDistrict level is an idea that originated inthe recent past; the idea was initiated byour current DG Ym Louis Paulose andsupported by many other senior Y’s leaders.

First and foremost, we are aware thatany organized community would be ableto serve a cause better in comparison tothe unorganized. Y’s Menettes couldorganize themselves at the district level andcarry out various social activities, which willstrengthen the functioning of Y’s Men’sClubs.

Even though many clubs in our Districtdo not have a Y’s Menettes club, acollaborative approach will enable suchMenettes to do active community projectsand eventually be able to start their ownMenettes clubs. Menettes, on the whole, will be able to scale up their communityprojects and improve the image of Y’sdomin Bangalore.

A preliminary meeting was held on 21July with representatives from most of theclubs from our District. Some of the ideas, which came out during the meeting were:

Conduct awareness programs related tocancer and HIV/AIDS for high schoolstudents;Visit cancer carecentres to offersupport andsolace;Organise aMedical Campfocusing ondetection ofcancer;Encourage and promote fellowshipamong Menettes by organizing a picnic;Bring the Menettes together for anexclusive event of their own to showcasetheir talents in the form of Menettes’Nite. The idea is to network among Y’s

Menettes in the District and to come upwith proactive ideas. These ideas canbecome a reality only with the help andsupport of all the menettes. I request allthe menettes, especially the senior Y’sMenettes, to guide and support us inmaking this a reality.
