PROJECT• Sea link project conceived in 1999.
• Plagued by PILs – Fishermen & Environmentalists
• 2004 - Work Started.
• But drastic changes to 80% of the bridge design.
• Cost escalation from Rs. 350 Crore to Rs. 1,306 Crore to Rs. 1,634 Crore.
• MSRDC Project.
• Executed by Hindustan Construction Company.
• Illumination By Bajaj Electricals for a budget of Rs. 9 Crore.

• The length of steel wires used in the project is equivalent to the circumference of the Earth.

FACT
• The length of the bridge is 63 times the height of the Qutub Minar in Delhi.
• The height of the cable-stayed tower is 126m, which is equal to a 43-storey tower.
• Each cable can take a weight of 900 tons.
• Monitored by an Intelligent Bridge System with a 16-lane, state-of-the-art toll plaza.
• Is built by a skilled team comprising of the best engineers from India, as well as, other countries including Britain, Canada, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Serbia, Singapore and Switzerland.
HOW THE SEA-LINK HELPS
• Additional connectivity from city to suburbs.
• Reduces travel time from 1 hour to just 7 minutes.
• Decongests Mahim Causeway – 125,000 vehicles a day.
• Avoids 29 traffic lights.
• Save Rs. 100 Crore a year in vehicle operating costs.
PROBLEMS PERCEIVED
• No solutions figured out for major traffic snarls at Worli.
• Additional Congestion at some other roads.
• Proposed Toll price (Rs. 50 / one-way) may dissuade a few.
