What Is Rebel Week?
Cork Rebel Week 2013 will take place between the14th & 20th October, 2013. It will be a week-long celebration of“all things Cork" with a specific focus on bringingInternational visitors and family home to Cork County and Cork Citythroughout the week.
The initiative of Rebel Week will target a minimum of 5,000 International Visitors as well as friends & family of Cork living abroad, plus a further influx of National and Local audiences attending the various Cork events and activities, all of which will boost the economy and awareness of Cork during what is traditionally low season within the Tourism, Hospitality, Retail and Leisure Industries. The concept surrounding Rebel Week we believe will embrace the imagination of Corkonians living locally, nationally and Internationally with the strong poten-tial of Rebel Week becoming a new annual event in the National Events Calendar.
Key Cork Rebel Week Events & attractions will include;
The availability of a Cork Rebel Week Passport to International visitors which will give the holder entitlement to extensive discounts and offers across the County in Accommodation, Hospitality, Retail and Leisure dur-ing Rebel Week. Locals can also obtain a passport via initiatives around supporting and promoting the con-cept.
International Marching Bands integrating in the community of Cork County and City. Local Communities in towns and districts throughout Cork will host the bands and will organise local events and activities throughout the week with the highlight of an International Cork Parade and Primary Activities in Cork City over the week-end, October 19th & 20th. International Cork Day – Wednesday October 16th in celebration of both the birthday of Michael Col-lins andInternational Food Day. Visas will be issued at all County borders to gain access to Cork on the day in exchange for a donation to Cork local charities.
International Sporting Events – throughout the week and across the various fields of sport.
The Global Cork Economic Forum & the Global Cork Network – the sons and daughters of Cork will be in-dividually invited home to take part in meaningful discussions and receive a greater understanding of econom-ic renewal and job creation, specific to Cork City and County. They will also be allowed to have fun! This week-long programme to attract over 5,000 overseas visitors to the Cork region will be brought to Cork by its two local authorities, Cork County and City Councils, who take their responsibility to drive tourism and eco-nomic development very seriously, and see Rebel Week as a fantastic way of shining the international spot-light on Cork, in the same way as it did when the Queen visited. Cork stole the show on that occasion, and Cork City and County Councils are determined that it can do the same for the Gathering 2013. The week-long event is being organised and managed by Corporate.ie on behalf of Cork County and City Councils. The first associated sponsor is on board, Cork International Airport. As well as financial support, Cork Airport will play a key role in working with the Rebel Week Team to encourage additional flights to Cork in October for visitors travelling to Ireland. Further significant associated sponsors will be announced in the coming weeks as Cork Rebel Week builds momentum in becoming “THE Gathering of THE Gathering”.
Cork Rebel Week is all about FUN, while helping the Cork economy in the short and long term. Rebel Week needs buy-in from the People and Businesses of Cork to create the best “new” National Event as part of the Gathering Celebration 2013 that has the vision to become a New Annual Event in the National Calendar.
BANDON, THE PERFECT HOST TOWN
Bandon should be selected as a host town
because…. Bandon boasts all of the credentials to be the perfect and model host
town.
As a market town Bandon has the tradition and experience of being
known as of Cork’s primary meeting destinations and focal points.
Geographically, Bandon is ideally located just 30minutes from Cork airport and 40 minutes from
Cork’s train station. Bandon is known as the gateway to west Cork as it is the key to all access
points to all other destinations west of the county
With over forty voluntary organisations Bandon is alive and vibrant with community spirit. Just
last year the gathering of 1,263 leprechauns broke a Guinness World Record and the town aims to
repeat this feat again this St.Patrick’s day.
Catering for the now varied population Bandon has a festival for everyone, Engage Arts Festival,
Bandon Music Festival and Bandon Summerfest to name but a few.
Speaking of music, Bandon is renowned for their marching bands with both flag ship bands
St.Patricks and the Bandon District Pipe Band both making recent tours to the US. Bandon also
boast a unique brass band which can be seen and heard regularly performing at weekends around
the town centre.
In 2009 Bandon was victim to mother nature at her worst, as flood levels reached their highest
ever recorded. Bandon rallied together and bounced back stronger and more vibrant together.
Bandon proved to all that it’s unrivalled community spirit is the life and blood of their community
and we believe that if Bandon was to be accepted as a host town iin addition to enabling the com-
munity bring a fresh and dynamic approach to Rebel Week, it would more importantly provide a
100% authentic rebel experience for our guests.
