WHY USE BANANA SLEEVES?
1. Sleeves provide protection from wind rain hail and other elements.
2. Banana gets a better colour with the use of sleeves.
3. Sleeves provide a stable “climate” within the sleeve enabling the Banana to “fill out” and reach higher weight.
WHY USE BANANA SLEEVES?
4. Silver sleeves are used to delay ripening of banana and provide flexibility in marketing.
TYPES OF BANANA SLEEVES
There are a number of types of banana sleeves which are used according to the season that they are used in, the climatic conditions of the area and the strategic marketing aims of the grower. There are however four basic types of sleeves.
TYPES OF SLEEVES (cont)
1. BLUE SLEEVE 20 MICRONS.
This sleeve provides protection and produces the best results for the bananas. It does not provide protection against harsh weather and is not recommended for use on bunches that will be picked after winter. The sleeve is thin but strong and very flexible.
Types of Sleeves (cont)
2. Blue 40-60 Microns:
This sleeve provides better protection than the 20 micron. It is strong and withstands normal winter weather. It replaces the thicker sleeves that have been used in the past.
Types of Sleeves (cont)
Silver 40-60 microns:
This sleeve provides similar protection to the blue sleeve but delays the pick by approximately two weeks providing flexibility in marketing.
Red 40 microns:
New sleeve excellent results no flexibility. Must be picked immediately that fruit is ripe.
HOW TO USE SLEEVES• The grower must check for flowering between one
and three times a month.
HOW TO USE SLEEVES

Calculation• The calculation is simple: • Sleeves provide additional output of 20%
and better quality.• For 1000 bunches the output is about 30
tons.• 10% increase in output will give 3 tons
extra output.
CONCLUSION• These are recommendations for use of
sleeves in climates similar to region.• Each grower should use sleeves according
to his conditions, experience and aims.• Although they cost money Plastnirs banana
sleeves provide quality bananas and higher outputs.
