If you could learn anything, what would it be? “I’d learn to play a musical instrument – either the piano or guitar. I listen to a lot of different music, but if you were to ask me my favorite, I couldn’t tell you just one.”

What is the best advice you could give your children? “My daughter is 4, and my son is 2, and we have another girl on the way. I would tell them to treat people like they want to be treated. The other piece of advice I would give them is whatever they are doing, always do your best at it.”

If you could eat dinner with one celebrity, living or dead who would you choose? “President Barack Obama, just because he’s the president. He’s the leader of our country. I would love to be able to talk to him and see what he would have to say.”

What excites you about being a part of the 2013 Ravens? “I’m just excited to be here. I can’t just give you one reason for why I’m excited to be here. Everything that the Ravens stand for and where they are now, that excites me.” What is the best advice you have been given this year? “Keep working and be patient.”

What is your favorite event that you’ve done to give back to your community? “We did a firefighters vs. players softball game in Jacksonville and a bowling event for the Ronald McDonald house. We also did a Christmas event for the kids, which my favorite part is just seeing the expressions on their faces and seeing how happy they are just for that moment. You never know what they are going through or all the details of their illness, so it’s just nice to see them smile.”

TOUGH SLATE IN 2013

Page 3: Baltimore Ravens Press Release...TV broadcast simulcast with radio. TERRELL SUGGS ON THE 2013 RAVENS “I’ve just been watching, listening and reading what people have been saying

ESPN.com’s Herm Edwards on head coach John Harbaugh: “Going into his sixth season in Baltimore, all John Harbaugh has done is win. He’s made the playoffs every year, won at least one playoff game every year, and of course, won a Super Bowl. He’s instilled toughness in his team, which will carry over after the losses of [Ed] Reed and [Ray] Lewis. This team is a perennial playoff contender with a great coach at the helm.”

Defensive coordinator Dean Pees on having a different defense every year and making progress each season: “It’s always a different defense every year. The difference is we lost some stars that have been here for a long, long time. But, whenever somebody leaves, no matter who it is, someone always ends up stepping up. I feel good about the talent that we have. We’ve worked as hard as we can to put this team together over the last few months. I like where we are at, like the progress we have made.”

WR Torrey Smith on how fast the Ravens’ wide receiver corps is: “Our guys can run, man. I wouldn’t doubt it if this is the fastest receivers group in Ravens history. You watch these guys on the field, and they can all run. We’ve got a lot of young guys who people might not have seen play yet, but personally, I feel confident that once everyone gets a shot, they’ll prove they belong. A guy like Deonte [Thompson], he can play, and it’s going to be a case where people are surprised once he gets a chance.”

S Michael Huff on the competitiveness of the Ravens’ practices: “The energy in practice, the competitiveness of the defense against the offense, I hadn’t seen it before. You can see why they win all the time here. It’s competitive here day-in and day-out and wanting to get better.” Head coach John Harbaugh on rookie S Matt Elam’s play during the 2013 training camp: “Nothing negative whatsoever, positive in every way. He’s certainly young; certainly he’ll make a few mistakes here and there, but Matt will make them fast. He’s a very aggressive player, very smart, and he’s’ going to be a key contributor for us.” Head coach John Harbaugh on the 2013 Ravens: “This is our opportunity. The 2012 Baltimore Ravens football team provided us an opportunity that no other team can do, and that is win two [Super Bowls] in a row. The 2013 team is responsible to try to get that done.”

CBSSports.com’s Jason LaCanfora on the Ravens’ reputation:“They are first-class from the owner on down. People want to work for them, and players want to play for them. They are an elite franchise in every sense of the word in any way you want to evaluate it.”

Head coach John Harbaugh on QB Joe Flacco’s leadership: “Joe has been a great leader. Joe has done a great job throughout his career in his own way. One thing about Joe: Nothing is going to change Joe. Joe is going to be who he is. I don’t think a change in the roster is going to change Joe. A change in the contract isn’t going to change Joe. Joe is Joe, and that’s what you love about him.”

CBSSports.com’s Clark Judge on the Ravens’ defensive improvement: “When you watch them practice, and when you size up their depth chart, there’s only one conclusion to draw about a defense that for years was the crankshaft of this organization: Yep, it will be better. You heard me. Better. That’s because it’s faster, deeper and younger than the unit that for most of last year, frankly, was a disappointment.”

NT Haloti Ngata on OLB Elvis Dumervil’s leadership: “[Elvis] Dumervil is automatic. He’s probably been the best leader this offseason, just being here every day, showing guys how to work and being there to answer any questions the younger guys have. He’s done a good job.”

OLB Elvis Dumervil on feeling welcomed in Baltimore: “The guys in the locker room have been as advertised when I was making the decision to get here. Guys welcomed me in, and it’s just been amazing. I feel comfortable.”

ESPN.com’s Matt Williamson on DE Chris Canty’s impact: “A key to the [Chris] Canty signing is his pass-rush skills from the interior. On throwing downs, the Ravens could feature [Terrell] Suggs and [Elvis] Dumervil as ends on a four-man line, with Canty and [Haloti] Ngata or Pernell McPhee, a very underrated pass-rusher in his own right, as the defensive tackles with five or six defensive backs on the field. Canty gives the Ravens all sorts of possibilities and should excel in his new home.”

DE Chris Canty on rookie DT Brandon Williams: “God has blessed that young man with a big set of arms. When he starts learning how to use them, he’s going to be really, really impressive.”

“No team did a better job in the 2013 draft, and even after an offseason where it seemed like the Ravens lost a lot of players. In part because of a great draft, they look just as good or better on paper as the team that just brought home a title heading into 2013. Matt Elam and Arthur Brown should make a difference right away. Ozzie Newsome has put together an enviable front office and scouting staff, and the Ravens haven’t traded away any future picks of value, so you can expect more of the same as long as Ozzie is in charge.”

COORDINATORS NOTES

Jim Caldwell, a 36-year coaching veteran, joined theRavens as the team’s QBs coach in February 2012 and was elevated to offensive coordinator on Dec. 10, replacing Cam Cameron. Caldwell arrived in Baltimore after coaching 10 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, including the three (2009-11)

as head coach. In his first year at the helm, he led the Colts to the AFC Championship and a berth in Super Bowl XLIV. Caldwell, who earned a Super Bowl ring (2006) with Indy, spent six seasons tutoring one of the NFL’s all-time greats in QB Peyton Manning. During the course of Caldwell’s time in Indianapolis, the Colts achieved much success, tying an NFL record with nine-straight playoff appearances and winning six AFC South division titles.

Dean Pees, a 10-year NFL-coaching veteran, was promoted to defensive coordinator on Jan. 27, 2012, after guiding the Ravens’ LBs for two seasons. He is the sixth “D” coordinator in franchise history. Pees, who was New England’s “D” coordinator from 2006-09, leads a Baltimore unit that finished as the

NFL’s third-best scoring defense four-consecutive years (2008-11) and tied (NYG) for 12th in 2012, allowing 21.5 points per game.

Pees leads a unit that during the John Harbaugh Era (2008-12)...• Has allowed the NFL’s second-fewest points (17.3) and the third-fewest net yards (304.1) per game during this span.

Four “D” coordinators in Ravens history have gone on to become NFL head coaches: Marvin Lewis (1996-2001), Mike Nolan (2002-04), Rex Ryan (2005-08) and Chuck Pagano (2011). Former Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio was the Ravens’ LBs coach from 1999-2001, while Atlanta’s Mike Smith also coached on the “D” from 1999-2002.

Certainly, there are reporters who compiled rankings of their own. Still, it’s special for the Ravens to boast six of the Top 100’s overall players on their roster heading into the 2013 season.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER NOTES

One of the NFL’s most disruptive forces, DT Haloti Ngata was named to his fourth Pro Bowl in 2012. Perhaps the NFL’s most athletic DT, Ngata stops the run (444 career tackles), rushes the passer (22 career sacks) and even drops into coverage (3 career INTs). In Week 11’s win at Pittsburgh, he had 5 tackles and

1 sack (-10 yards), helping hold the Steelers to 10 points. Baltimore has a history of strong run defense, and with Ngata’s help the past several seasons, has been consistently sturdy on the ground.

Much of Baltimore’s success in 2012 could be attributed to the strong performances of the special teams units. In addition to posting a league-best 3 kick return TDs (108- & 105-yard KORs and 63-yard PR by WR/RS Jacoby Jones), scoring a TD off a fake FG (7-yard run by P Sam Koch) and being consistently accurate on FG attempts (K Justin Tucker was 30-of-33), Baltimore’s return blocking and coverage teams excelled. The Ravens ranked second (tied, Min.) in the NFL in average starting position after a kickoff (24.6-yard line) and stood fifth in opponent average starting field position following a kickoff (20.6-yard line).

In 2012, longtime NFL writer Rick Gosselin of The Dallas Morning News ranked the Ravens’ special teams unit No. 3 in the league in his annual comprehensive ratings system that’s based on 22 categories, assigning points according to each standing — 1 for best, 32 for worst. The Vikings finished first in special teams with a composite score of 253.5 ahead of the Bengals (276) and Ravens (277).

WR/RS Jacoby Jones ranked first in the NFL with a 30.7 KOR average and posted three combined kick return TDs (2 KOR and 1 PR) in 2012. Not only is Jones the first Raven to ever tally 3 total kick return TDs in a season, but he’s just one of five NFL players since 2008 to score a PR, KOR and receiving TD in a single campaign.

2013 NFL INFORMATION

A number of playing-rules changes were approved by NFL clubs during the spring. The primary focus of those changes was enhancing player safety. “We want to make the game safer both for the player being tackled and the player making the tackle,” says NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Ray Anderson. “We have no higher priority than player safety.”

The 2013 rules changes and points of emphasis:

• UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS: Several adjustments were made to the unnecessary roughness rule in the interests of player safety. All unnecessary roughness violations result in a 15-yard penalty and may warrant potential discipline.

o It is illegal for a runner or tackler to initiate forcible contact by delivering a blow with the top or crown of his helmet against an opponent when both players are clearly outside the tackle box. This rule change is designed to protect not only the player receiving the blow, but also the player delivering it. There are three components for this foul to be enforced: (1) the player must line up his opponent; (2) he must lower his head; and (3) he must deliver a forcible blow with the crown of his helmet to any part of the defender’s body. If contact occurs inside the tackle box or if all three components are not present, there is no foul. If both players are moving at an angle, and neither player has lined up his opponent, the contact is legal. Players should attempt to keep their heads up when making contact with their opponents whenever possible.o Defensive players are prohibited from pushing down linemen into the offensive formation. The rules for low blocks have also been modified as part of this change. Going forward, the defense will be prohibited from blocking below the waist at any time during a down in which there is a scrimmage kick, which includes punts, field goals and PATs. Previously, players could block low on or inside the tight end during these plays.o In 2010, defensive players were prohibited from lining up over the snapper on scrimmage kicks. That restriction is still in place. On field-goal and PAT attempts, the snapper has been afforded additional protections and will now be considered a defenseless player.o In 2013, the peel-back block will be illegal anywhere in the field of play. Previously, this tactic was only illegal outside the tackle box.

• ILLEGAL FORMATION: The defense cannot have more than six players on the line of scrimmage on either side of the snapper during kicking plays. This rule is designed to protect players who are in a vulnerable position. Violations of this rule will result in a five-yard penalty.

• INSTANT REPLAY: Plays may now be reviewed even if a head coach erroneously throws the challenge flag on plays that are subject to automatic review. If a coach challenges a scoring play, a turnover, a play that began inside the two-minute warning of either half or during an overtime period, that team will be automatically charged a timeout. If the team has no timeouts remaining, it will be automatically assessed a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

• TUCK RULE: Any loss of control after a passer starts to tuck the ball back towards his body will be a fumble. Prior to this change, it was a pass until a passer tucked the ball all the way back into his body. Now the forward passing motion ends once a passer begins a tuck. There will also be points of emphasis on several existing rules this season (although the rules themselves have not changed):

• All rules that encourage player safety will continue to be strictly enforced, including players hitting opponents late around the pile and on the ground and runners grabbing the facemask of defensive players. In order to help players recognize when the play is over, game officials will be instructed to blow their whistles at the end of every play. All violations related to player safety are subject to potential fines and, in some instances, could lead to a suspension. The focus is on eliminating these tactics from the game.

• THIGH AND KNEE PADS MANDATORY IN 2013: As part of the continuing focus on player health and safety, NFL owners in May of 2012 overwhelmingly approved the proposal by the NFL Competition Committee to make thigh and knee pads mandatory beginning in 2013. All players – with the exception of punters and kickers – will be wearing thigh and knee pads this season. This ensures an equality of competition.

Illustrated below are the Baltimore Ravens’ 2012 preseason TV ratings compared to the other top programming that aired in Baltimore opposite the Ravens’ game. Each Ravens’ preseason game was the highest-rated program on its respective night.

RAVENS 2012 PRESEASON TV RATINGS

The NFL has been recognized as America’s most popular sport for the past 48 years, rated No. 1 by fans in the Harris Poll since 1965. In fact, more people name professional football (34 percent) as their favorite sport than the combined total of the next three professional sports – baseball (16), auto racing (eight) and men’s pro basketball (five). More than 223 million Americans watched the 2012 NFL season and viewership of NFL games continues to dominate the fragmented television landscape. NFL popularity can be measured in other ways as well. For instance:

• NFL games on CBS, FOX and NBC averaged 19.3 million viewers – 154 percent higher than the average primetime viewership among the four major over-the-air networks (7.6 million average on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC).• Super Bowl XLVII (Ravens-49ers) reached a total audience of 164.1 million viewers, making it the most-viewed show in U.S. television history according to The Nielsen Company. Super Bowl XLVII topped the previous record of 162.9 million total viewers for Super Bowl XLV (Packers-Steelers). In addition, an average of 108.4 million viewers watched Super Bowl XLVII, the third most all time.• According to the 2012 ESPN Sports Poll, the NFL is the favorite sport of 26 percent of respondents. More than twice as many people identify the NFL as their favorite sport as second place.

FOOTBALL CAMPS AND CLINICS

BEACH BASHHABITAT FOR HUMANITY

While the offseason provides an opportunity for players and coaches to take a break from football, many Ravens used that time to host youth football camps and clinics. On June 15, Ravens coaches participated in the team’s second-annual youth football clinic (Reisterstown). Extra emphasis was placed this year on concussion prevention and awareness as Ravens head physician, Dr. Andrew Tucker, spoke to the athletes, parents and coaches. In addition, numerous players led and hosted youth football clinics, including FB Vonta Leach (Lumberton, NC), LB Jameel McClain (Reisterstown), RB Ray Rice (Towson), QB Tyrod Taylor (Hampton, VA), CB Lardarius Webb (Westminster) and WR LaQuan Williams (Baltimore).

This past spring, the Ravens announced a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Chesapeake, pledging to build almost two dozen row homes in Pigtown, a neighborhood near M&T Bank Stadium. Ravens employees and foundation partners came together for two separate build days, with a third planned for the future. Players K Justin Tucker and LS Morgan Cox joined volunteers to prepare the area for the build.

Fans joined Ravens coaches, players, cheerleaders and mascot Poe for the second-annual Beach Bash in Ocean City, MD, over the first weekend in June. CB Chykie Brown, S Omar Brown, OLB Adrian Hamilton, S James Ihedigbo and WR Deonte Thompson took part in the numerous weekend activities, including the Ocean City Purple Friday Caravan, the Annual Ravens Roost Parade and the 7-on-7 High School Tournament, hosted by Under Armour.
