Spring cleaning events in Patterson Park

The Patterson Park Neighborhood Association held a meeting on Monday, April 14, to discuss the ways Patterson Park residents could get in the springtime spirit with upcoming events.

As spring comes into bloom, so does the desire to freshen up the neighborhood that has been suffocated by snow for so many months.

Steve Preston, the caretaker of the garden on the corner of Baltimore Street and Linwood Street, said he is looking for volunteers to tend to the garden on the second Tuesday of every month. As the daffodils come in, Preston said, the garden needs more intensive upkeep, especially when it comes to mulching and weeding.

As the weather warms up, it’s time to break out your peg leg and eye patch, because the 11th Annual Fell’s Point Privateer Festival returns on April 18 and 19 throughout the Fell’s neighborhood.

Hosted by Fell’s Point Main Street, the festival will feature local vendors, an arts and crafts area, and a variety of entertainment options for any and all scallywags.

Those of age can participate in the Pyrate Invasion Pub Crawl on Saturday, April 18, featuring 18 bars and restaurants offering discounts, such as The Tavern at Admiral Fell Inn, Bertha’s Mussels, and Max’s Taphouse. The first 100 to register get a free “swag bag” and commemorative T-shirt. If you’re a bit younger, a Kid’s Zone will be on Broadway Square with an inflatable pirate ship slide, arts and crafts, and more.

While it’ll be mostly fun and games, you’ll get the opportunity to learn the seaside history of privateers in our ports and the significance of Fell’s Point in sea travel. The Valhallas Pirates, a live pirate reenactment troop, will battle it out on Broadway Pier and The Real Mermaids will be swimming around in large tanks, making it seem like you’re in the middle of an epic fairy tale.

There will be dockside ship tours and the Urban Pirates Family and Adult Cruises crew and ship will be on hand for more fun. Music will be provided by The Brigands.

Naturally, nautical and pirate garb is encouraged.

On Wednesday, April 15, the Southeast Community Development Corporation will hold a tax sale foreclosure workshop at the Southeast Anchor Library. The event will provide free face-to-face legal help to Baltimore City homeowners who are behind on property taxes or water bills.

“The workshops were started because we needed a way to reach people facing tax sale foreclosure before their liens were sold,” says Claudia Wilson, the supervisor of the Southwest CDC’s housing counseling program.

“At the workshop, homeowners facing property tax or water bill problems will have the opportunity to meet with a volunteer attorney and housing counselors to help them avoid foreclosure and work with them

The event is timely considering that on Thursday, April 9, the General Assembly approved a bill that would increase the amount of unpaid taxes it takes to put a home up for tax sales. The bill raised the amount from $250 to $750 and for water and sewer liens it would be $750, an increase from the current $350.

The event is sponsored by the Pro Bono Resource Center and will be open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3601 Eastern Ave.

to host live entertainment events and allow their patrons to be a nuisance to the neighbors who live nearby,” he said “the only way they will stop is to not renew their license.”

On September of last year, the El Punto G was taken to the liquor board because of multiple noise complaints filed by neighbors. They were found guilty of holding live entertainment without a permit, over-crowding, and over-serving customers and made to pay a $4000 fine. The one charge they weren’t found guilty of was of distributing drugs. When a liquor board inspector went to examine the establishment, he heard a buzzer that was a sign to the patrons to stop what they’re doing. The hearing also described the large, intoxicated crowds that come out of El Punto G and disturbed the peace.

Gonter says that on their Facebook page, El Punto G is constantly posting about live entertainment, such as DJs and hookah, that they’re hosting even though they don’t have a license. He will present screen caps of these posts at Thursday’s meeting.

Gonter said there was a significant amount of discussion over whether to protest or not, while giving the owners the benefit of the doubt. But eventually the citizens decided for it, citing multiple and unlawful disturbances. He said that in order to be respected in the neighbor, you must be a good neighbor which was not happening at El Punto G.

The other bar in question is the SOS Lounge, which faced similar problems of noise and drunken rowdy customers.

The SOS Lounge used to get complaints of dumping and trash build-up until the community pushed them to get a dumpster. Also, residents of Rose Street spoke with the owner, Sherine Gray, who gave permission to paint a large scale mural over the chipped pain of the restaurant. The mural, made possible by a grant from Banner Neighborhoods, and the addition of the dumpster were two positive steps, according to Gonter.

Two liquor license protest of renewal hearings will be brought to the Baltimore City Liquor Board on Thursday, April 16. Two bars will be targeted, El Punto G Bar and Lounge on 123 N. Clinton St. and the SOS Lounge on 2511 E. Fayette St.

The protests come from residents who have had problems with the noise levels and illegal live entertainment from the bars. Many have complained about drunk patrons leaving the establishments, since they appear to be over-served, and their loud, destructive behaviors.

drafted a petition addressing these complaints. She then held a meeting with eight neighbors who expressed their concerns to Gray. Simple suggestions like lowering the music and soundproofing the walls were suggested. Drescher said that Gray was immediately willing to do what she could to eliminate the problems. She even gave out her cell phone numbers to those at the meeting encouraging them to call her if they have issues with her bar.

“After talking to the two single grandmoms raising grandkids that were really fed up with the noise and public urination and live right across from SOS, I thought, this isn’t right and signed the petition, too. It was truly a diverse neighborhood that came together with a great result using the petition as a bargaining chip to get some needed changes,” she said

For Drescher, the meeting was also a way to bring the business and residents face-to-face and motivating the community to get to know each other more.

Transcripts from the meeting as well as neighborhood signatures and an agreement from Gray will be given to the liquor board members as a show of support of the license renewal.

“She has been really receptive to the neighbors and I give her big kudos for meeting with us and addressing concerns,” said Drescher

The meetings with Baltimore City Liquor Board will occur at City Hall, 100 Holliday St., Room 215. The meeting for El Punto will begin at 1 p.m. and the meeting for SOS Lounge will begin at 11 a.m.

in need of volunteers to lead tour groups around the Pagoda. He then reviewed the upcoming events happening at the Pagoda. The first was Dia del Niño or Day of the Child on April 26.

“It’s a fantastic event, a great family-orientated event. But even if you don’t have any little kids in your house, you should still stop by and enjoy the energy there,” said Parker. The event was a huge success last year, attracting over 2000 attendees.

The Dia del Niño event will host games and activities for little ones, including the popular piñata-breaking. The piñatas were made by a team of local mothers that worked for months constructing them.

Another event for the kids is Spring Into Art at the Patterson Park Public Charter School on April 18.

“Spring Into Art is an opportunity for neighbors and committee members to come together and celebrate our school, to purchase student-made and professional art that’s been donated,” said John Wesby, the development chair for the school.

A spokesperson then talked about the city’s C.O.P (Citizen on Patrol) Walks, which occur the fourth Wednesday of every month. The C.O.P. walks were created as a way for the community to walk the neighborhood while getting to know their neighbors and local officers. On these walks, participants are encouraged to share their concerns with the officer giving the tour. The association agreed that the turn-out for the walks has been low and encourages residents to join.

Jeff Amoros, community aide for Councilman Kraft, sent out a call for volunteers willing to coach the Little League team made up of local 4th and 5th graders that play at Patterson Park.

“You do not need to be good at coaching,” said Amoros, “you really just need to show up and have fun with the kids, get them going on the field and have a good time.”

“They help you plant flowers in a planter, and you get education of how to take care of them, if you need it,” said association president, Leigh Peterson.

Also happening in Library Square is a variety of improvements due to a $500,000 grant. The area is going to be getting more permanent seating and the lights that hang over the square will be fixed and relit. Peterson talked about the possibility of installing Zipcars there and a mobile food market is also in works.

On the topic of beautifying your neighborhood, Patterson Park Greening Coordinator Kim Wiggins spoke about the upcoming home tour on June 13. The tour will showcase the unique homes and gardens of the Patterson Park neighborhood.

“If there’s a house in the neighborhood that you always walk by and think ‘Man, I’d like to get into that house’ feel free to send me the address and I will have no problem knocking on their door and forcing them to be on the home tour,” she said with a laugh.

The meeting then turned to events centered around the Mayor’s Spring Clean-Up Day on April 25. The first clean-up event will take place on Saturday, April 18 at the northwest corner of the park. One incentive that will be offered to volunteers will be a voucher to reduce your water bill. In order for this to work, the event first has to get approved by the city. Another clean-up on April 23 will focus on sprucing up the “pocket park” on Fayette and Potomac Streets.

April 25 will be the Rose Street Trash Day, which will utilize money the street was given to clean the 100 unit block of Rose Street.

Greek pride abounds during Baltimore Greek WeekIkarian diet is a bit of a mystery inspired by the people of Ikaria, Greece who are known to be in extremely good health and live long lives. The day after, on Friday, April 17, Ikaros welcomes Antonia’s Danse Productions as they perform a piece called DANSATIONS IV. The performance will incorporate dance styles from around the world such Bollywood and salsa together. The money raised will be donated to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.

The Hazelwood Inn in Rosedale will be showing Greek-themed films, such as 300 and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

The Kentrikon, a historic landmark and the first Greek establishment in Greektown, which opened in 1954, will have deals on jewelry, photographs, art, and even plane tickets to Greece.

For Economos, Greek Week gives people the chance to respect and to get in touch with a culture that is steeped in history, even if they aren’t Greek themselves. Greece is said to be the origin of democracy, said Economos, and their independence has deep ties to Maryland.

This Monday kicked off a week-long celebration of Greek culture, just in time for Greek Independence Day. The 5th Annual Greek Week explores the heritage of Baltimore’s Greek residents and commemorates the sacrifices that were made for Greece’s independence.

“This is a time where all share our love of all things Greek,” says Gayle Economos, spokesperson and publicist for Baltimore Greek Week. “It’s a way for people to try to understand about one another and learning to live together and learning about each other.”

The theme of the week is The Mediterranean Diet: A Greek Journey through Food. And there isn’t a better way to celebrate this diet then by indulging in authentic Greek cuisine. Restaurants from around Baltimore are participating by offering specials throughout the week.

“We love to share these things and that’s why we are celebrating and we invite others to come and join us!” she says.

Concluding the festivities will be a Greek Independence Parade on Sunday, April 19. The parade will travel throughout Greektown, from Haven Street to Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on Fait Avenue.

It will feature participants clothed in traditional, historically-accurate costumes as well as a reenactment of a Grecian legend. The performance troupe The Myrmidons, named after an elite group of Grecian warriors, will reenact the historic battles of Achilles.

Greek marching music will be provided by the The Hellenic Philharmonic Society band of New York.

“It’s sort of a combination of Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, there’s definitely a solemn aspect of it,” Economos said of the parade.

While it’ll be a joyous event, the parade is meant to honor those who died fighting for Greece’s freedom from the Ottoman Turks. Their sacrifices will be memorialized at the parade’s end, when a wreath will be placed on a reproduction of the Tomb of the Unknown

Solider by members of the Greek Orthodox clergy.

What are heartworms? They are parasitic worms that live in the heart and pulmonary arteries. And yes, it sounds just as bad as it actually is. Heartworm disease is serious and can be deadly, yet it’s completely preventable.

So, what’s the cause? Mosquitoes! Heartworms are transmitted to your pet

by infected mosquitoes and it only takes one bite. When the mosquito bites, it releases larvae into the tissue where they begin their journey and migrate into the blood vessels. They travel through the bloodstream, damaging arteries and organs, with the ultimate mission of making the heart its home. The larvae begin to develop into adult worms over the next 6-7 months, stressing the heart by restricting blood flow of the pulmonary artery (heart to lungs). Symptoms include coughing, intolerance to exercise/fatigue, decreased weight, and listlessness. Although dogs are the most common host, cats can also be infected, stressing their lungs. Unfortunately, cats show little to no symptoms which can lead to sudden death.

So, mosquitoes aren’t around all year in Maryland. True. Fluffy, your 4 pound Chihuahua never goes outside. Okay. So why use heartworm preventative all year long, if at all? Well, there’s no 100% guarantee that your pet will never be bitten by a mosquito. And in the state of Maryland, there are 4 types of mosquitoes known to carry heartworms. Fortunately there are successful treatments for heartworm disease; unfortunately the treatment plan is very expensive, time consuming, and extremely taxing on your pet’s body. Heartworm positive dogs are treated with injections of imiticide, a derivative of arsenic, in order to kill the adult worms.

Can you imagine being injected with a series of arsenic? No thank you. In fact, the costs and time invested into a heartworm treatment is roughly equivalent to 10 years’ worth of a once a month heartworm preventative.

The beginning life stages of heartworms are killed by the preventative, but at the

same time, the early life stages show no signs or symptoms leaving the disease undetected. So you’ve been giving your pet their monthly heartworm preventative and you decide to stop giving it come the cold weather and intend to restart when spring arrives. With unseasonably warm weather, your pet may have been exposed during the previous mosquito season. Which means all winter long the worms have been developing and migrating to the heart, silently. A heartworm pill could be fatal if given to a heartworm positive pooch.

The best cure is prevention all year round and an annual blood test. It’s safer, less costly, and healthier for your beloved companion. Start spring off on the right paw and get your pet tested and back on the pill!

The good, the bad, and the ugly of opening week

THE GOOD:Adam Jones is on fire after a hot

weekend against the Blue Jays. Jones is currently batting .381 with two home runs and seven runs batted in. Jones has also scored six runs and has added two doubles as well.

Newcomer Travis Snider is having a good start to his career as an Oriole. So far, Snider is batting .389 with a home run and six runs batted in. His .522 on base percentage leads the team as well.

Ubaldo Jimenez had a great first start of the year, going seven innings against the potent Toronto lineup and allowing only one hit while striking out eight. The other good sign from that start was he only walked one batter.

THE BAD:Chris Tillman had a great start to the

season, picking up the win Opening Day against the Rays, but his next start wasn’t so good, as he allowed seven runs (three earned) against Toronto in only 2 2/3 innings pitched. While his 3.86 ERA isn’t terrible, his 1.71 WHIP is terrible and his six walks in 9 1/3 innings pitched are also scary.Speaking of walks, the vast majority of Baltimore’s pitching staff could use a little target practice. In 53 total innings, the Orioles have allowed 25 free passes, with Tillman leading the way with those six walks while Miguel Gonzalez allowed five in his first start while Kevin Gausman and Jason Garcia have allowed seven walks in 7 1/3 innings. Not good when those guys come out of the bullpen and hand out free passes.

Pitchers have owned Ryan Flaherty this year it seems, and if they aren’t finding a hole in his bat, they are making the holes themselves. So far in 13 at-bats this year, Flaherty has struck out five times and is batting only .154.

THE UGLY:Manny Machado is currently batting

.053. He has one hit in 19 at bats this year. I know he is coming off another knee surgery, but hopefully this is just him shaking the rust off.

On the flip side, he does have the only Baltimore stolen base this year, however it is sad that the Orioles only have one stolen base in six games thus far.

Bud Norris in 2015 has been very ugly to say the least. His spring was pretty terrible, posting a 9.26 ERA over 11 2/3 innings, but then they actually got worse during his regular season debut as the Blue Jays hammered him for eight earned runs on seven hits in only three innings. Not sure what’s going on with Bud, but feels like something isn’t right.

While the season is still young it is certainly not time to panic just yet, but it would be nice to see the pitchers start to show better control and for Bud Norris to get his act together. If he continues to slide, the initial thought would have been to have Gausman take his spot in the rotation, but Gausman hasn’t exactly been lights out either this year, so one of them needs to get their act together, preferably both. Either way, not a bad start to the season.

They’ve been working twice a week since September. Glotfelty used this time to allow the children to create freely and solve their own problems. This gave the children an opportunity to expand their knowledge and trouble-shooting skills.

“I let them build them, see the mistakes, and guide them through the design process. It’s a good gateway into engineering,” he said, noting that robotics is much more than an afternoon activity. In their practices, Glotfelty breaks the robots down to their parts, educating the students on how each part operates and how they fit together.

“Sometimes they’re better at building than I am,” he laughs. He said the children have an innate interest and curiosity into the machinery of robots. He explained it reminds them of a video game, the process of setting up tasks and working to complete them.

If that last one seems out of place, you must not have ever met the robotics team of PPPCS. From April 15 to 18, the team will compete in the The 2015 VEX Robotics World Championship in Louisville, Kentucky.

They will face over 140 teams made up of middle and high school students from over 20 countries in their quest for the worldwide championship next weekend.

Their coach, Robert Glotfelty, is a middle school science teacher at the school and on his 4th year teaching robotics and his second teaching it at PPPCS. He explains that in robotic fighting, you’re given an initial objective and you must edit your robot to fit that goal. VEX Robotics combines teamwork, sportsmanship, and the STEM skills students learn in the classroom.

school program. The PPPCS’s team success will hopefully raise awareness and interest for those interested in making robotics. The team held a local competition in January that was attended by hundreds of enthusiastic sponsors.

According to the school, “Participation in robotics is one opportunity for these students to advance in the sciences, which can be life-changing, especially in Baltimore, a city rich with careers in science, research, and medicine.”

Many PPPCS students live in low-income areas. However, the eight students on the robotics team have high hopes for the future, such as attending Baltimore Polytechnic and Baltimore School for the Arts.

When asked about his team’s strategy going into the championship, Glotfelty said that winning isn’t the priority.

“I think we’re looking more at it being a good experience, like it’s going to be enjoying interacting with kids from different cultures and the corroborative experience of it taking it all in and figuring out how it all works and building on it for future experiences,” he said.

Posko, Leto’s sister, said that Leto would not have wanted the event to be sad. “She would love for us to all focus on how much we all loved her and her smile and laugh,” Posko said. She also mentioned her sister’s “abso-lutely wicked” sense of humor and deep affinity for the spiritual.“Although Kim was not associated with a specific religion, she was very spiritual,” said Posko. “She had an uncanny ability to understand these ancient texts.” Jan Dietrich, a spiritual mentor for Leto, said that she “really valued the presence of God in her life.”
