SHARE THE BEAUTY OF
YOUR COMMUNITY
WITH A FRESH AIR CHILD THIS
SUMMERCAPITAL DISTRICT - This summer, share the beauty of your community with a Fresh Air child while enjoy-ing the pure joys of summer in your own backyard! Thou-sands of volunteer host fam-ilies in rural, suburban, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada open their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family pro-gram. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New
York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Host families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experience sim-ple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at star-filled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often re-discover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can make summer special for a Fresh Air child, contact Ten-niel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org.

FDR “FIRESIDE CHAT”
AT CAMPFIRE PROGRAM
STILLWATER - On Saturday 14 June 2014 at 7:00 p.m., Saratoga National Historical Park hosts actor Gary Stamm as he portrays President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a real “fireside chat” describing a 1939 royal visit from the King and Queen of Britain and the fascinating implica-tions it had for our country and the entire world. What do you serve to the King and Queen of Britain if they come to visit your home? In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt took them on a picnic in the scenic Hudson Valley and served the great American treat of hot dogs. “Mr. Stamm really brings Roosevelt to life,” notes park ranger Joe Craig. “Franklin Roosevelt played a vital role as Governor of New York and President of the United States, in preserving Sara-toga Battlefield.” The event is presented by the Friends of Saratoga Battlefield, and is free of charge to the pub-lic at the Battlefield Visitor Center. Please bring a lawn chair and insect repellant. Saratoga National Historical Park offers a variety of pro-grams throughout the year. For more information about this or other events, please call the Visitor Center at 518-670-2985 or check our web-site at www.nps.gov/sara our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/saratoganhp or follow our Twitter feed @SaratogaNHP

THE WHIPPLE CITY FESTIVALGREENWICH - This year, the Whipple City Festival will once again feature living history demonstrations in Dorr Park. On Saturday June 14th there will be four regiments reenacting four different periods in history. The 2nd Continental Artillery Regiment is a group of re-enactors from the Revolutionary War. Cannon will be on display as well as firearms from that period. Musket firings will take place at different times during the day and several campsites will be set for display with re-enactors in period dress. The 125th NY Regiment Association will be representing the Civil War period. This living history group represents a typical military campsite of 1861 and is chartered with the NYS Education Department. Tents and campsites will be set up. This group will have musket firings during the festival and wooden muskets will be available for children to help the re-enactors do musket drills. The 99th In-fantry Division will be representing World War II. A field table, 4-5 puptents, an ammo box as well as WWII weapons will be on display. This year we are also adding WWI to our group
of reenactors. They will have a table with memorabilia from that era. Also in Dorr Park will be The Greenwich Town Histo-rian and the Willard Mountain DAR and the Washington Co. Historical Society with information booths and items for sale. The park is still open to having other historical organizations set up info booths. Contact the chamber at [email protected]. Friday, June 13, 2014, following the conclusion of the parade, local musical group, Big Easy Revue, will take the stage at the gazebo at Mowry Park beginning at 6:30 p.m. Led by Greenwich resident Matt Edwards, Big Easy Revue (formerly known as Buck2Fifty) is a 5 piece band that brings a swing-ing, Calypso and soulful mix of music which sounds like it comes straight from the streets of New Orleans. On Saturday, June 14, 2014, the gazebo will be alive with more musicians to entertain the crowds. Get Up Jack takes the stage at 1 p.m. playing Irish and contem-porary music. Get Up Jack is a new musical adventure from former area favorite Hair of the Dog members, John Haggerty, Mike DeAn-gelis and Scott Apicelli, along with three other area musicians. Stick around Saturday night and enjoy the country-bluegrass-rock sounds of Eastbound Jesus beginning at 7 p.m. Greenwich native brothers Luke and Carl An-derson are joined by other talented musicians as they perform their own original songs that are sure to be crowd favorites.

ENJOY 60’S MUSIC AND
HELP US “GIVE CANCER THE
BOOT”SARATOGA SPRINGS - On Friday, June 20th at the Sara-toga-Wilton Elks Club from 7-10 pm you can enjoy the music and dancing with “The Shames” a local band com-prised of Bill McTygue, Steve Henderer, and Gary Brooks. The Saratoga-Wilton Ladies Auxiliary donated the cost of the band so we can make more money to donate to the American Cancer Society through the Saratoga Re-lay for Life. The cost for this evening is $10 paid at the door or by calling Debbie at 885-6506. The Bumble Bee’s Team has been raising more than $5000 in the last six months to support our wish to “Give Cancer the Boot”. This band has a good follow-ing, many women keep the dance floor busy. A cash bar, light fare, and 50/50 raffle will be available to add to your enjoyment. We hope many will find their “60’s” attire and come dressed for
the evening. Cancer has af-fected almost everyone and this is one way to save others from its effects and have a good time with friends. Call Debbie at 885-6506 to get your tickets and reserve a ta-ble. Please support our fun-draiser and pay it forward.

DENTISTRY FROM THE HEART OF DR. THOMAS J. PRAY
BALLSTON SPA - The fi rst 100 uninsured Saratoga County residents to show up at Dr. Thomas J. Pray’s dental practice at 128 Milton Avenue in Ballston Spa Friday, June 20 will have something extra special to smile about. For the second time in as many years, Pray (supported by a team of other humanitarian-hearted dentists, hygienists and assistants) is off ering an entire day of FREE basic oral health care services inspired by Dentistry from the Heart. Last summer, Pray and his team of volunteers donated the equivalent of $30,000 in free consultations and x-rays followed by EITHER a free clean-ing, fi lling OR extraction. One patient in need was also given a FREE root canal. Identical services will be off ered between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to the fi rst 100 uninsured Saratoga County residents who show up at Dr. Pray’s June 20. Because patients are seen on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis, those wishing to take advantage of the Dentistry from the Heart event are en-couraged to arrive early. Patients will be welcomed into the reception area in groups of 10 at a time, and thanks to the generosity of local restaurants and fi refi ghters, complimen-tary beverages and lawn chairs will be available to Early Birds who must remain on the sidewalk while waiting for interior space. Dentists expected to join Pray are Francisco Banchs, Lionel Bulford, Allyson Byrne, Katelyn Page, Richard Salva-dore and Vera Salvadore. (A complete list of those off ering their time and treasure will be available closer to the June 20 event.) To learn more, please call 885-8321 or visit www.thomasjpraydds.com.

(518) 338-6812 For the last couple of months, I’ve had to mow every week. Even now, the soil is still moist due to all the passing thunderstorms we seem to be having and the lawn is still growing almost as fast as it was in spring. Usually we get a break from mowing about now as the heat slows down the growth of the “cool season” grass types that make up our northern lawns. Not so this year. This non-stop mowing takes a toll on our lawn mowers. There’s still a lot of mowing ahead so now would be a good time to take a few moments to take care of mower maintenance to insure that our mowers are in tip top shape for the rest of the season. This is one of those chores that is easy to put off but wise gardeners will protect their invest-ment but fi nding the time.
Let’s start with the oil. We all know that we should change our car’s oil every 3,000 miles but, what about our lawn mower? Our mowers don’t have odometers so we can’t measure its usage in miles. It is recommended that you change your mower’s engine oil after every 25 hours of use. Of course your mower doesn’t have a gauge or even an “idiot light’ to tell us when these hours have elapsed so we have to estimate. Say your lawn takes an hour and a half to mow. That means that you should change your oil after you’ve mowed your lawn about 17 times. Everyone’s lawn and mower is a different size so this is something you’ll have to fi gure out on your own. My lawn takes about 4 hours to mow so I need to change my oil after only about 6 mowings. Considering that the mower cost about a grand, I’m willing to tackle the task.
Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when replacing the oil. Al-most all mowers require SAE 30w oil. Don’t make the mistake of just grabbing some au-tomotive oil out of your garage and using it in your mower. These multi viscosity oils (5w-30w, 20w-50w, etc.) are NOT made for use in mower engines and should NOT be used unless your owner’s manual says to do so. If you’ve lost the owner’s manual, ask a qualifi ed mower mechanic what your type of engine oil to use. 99.9% of mowers will need SAE 30W oil.
Be careful when you’re refi lling you mower’s engine with fresh oil. They don’t hold much oil and it’s easy to put too much in. Overfi lling the engine with oil creates extra friction and shortens the life of the engine. A little too much of a good thing.
The next big issue is blade sharpness. Never mow with a dulled blade. A dull blade will thrash and shred the blades of grass. This is unsightly and shocks the grass un-necessarily. Worse yet, it puts a lot of extra strain on the engine since it’s a lot harder for the mower to shred the grass with a dull blade than slice it with a sharp one. All this extra work by the engine shortens its life. To avoid EVER mowing with a dull blade, I’ve invested in a spare blade. When the blade on the mower gets dull, I replace it with the new blade and I drop off the dull one at my local power equipment dealer for sharpening. Just as with my razor, a fresh blade is always close at hand.
Last but not least, clean the air fi lter every time you change the oil. My mower has a foam fi lter so all I have to do to clean it is squeeze it in soapy water, rinse it in clean water and let it air dry before putting it back into the mower. If your mower has a paper fi lter, keep an extra one on hand so you can change it as needed.
Of course, always unhook the spark plug when you’re working on your mower.
I know that there are lots of mowers out there that have been mowing away all season with oil that has been in use since last year. If one of these mowers is yours then you’ve got to ask yourself, “Am I feeling lucky?” Save yourself some big bucks and take a few minutes to change the oil. You know who you are. Just DO it.
If and when drier, extended summer weather arrives, let your lawn get taller, maybe (4” to 5”) as long as the weather stays hot. If you scalp it, the sun will heat the soil to temperatures that will kill the roots of your lawn. Letting it get a little longer allows the blades of the grass to shade the soil keeping soil temperatures from getting high enough to cause permanent dam-age to the roots. Thanks for the read.
