Easter weekend is supposed to be a holiday, but it has been a lot more exhausting than a couple of days at work. Over the course of one weekend Forest have stared down the barrel of a gun, lifted a city to its feet in ecstasy, and stood firm against the odds to keep hopes alive. And done it all in about the hardest possible way. Saturday was chaos. With 80 minutes played we were running out of ideas, and the clock was speeding by with our Championship status affixed. On 85 minutes we were convincing ourselves that a point kept the door open just wide enough for us to slip through. After 95 minutes we were in ecstasy, and it took another 95 minutes to heave another priceless point away from South Yorkshire this afternoon. This weekend has restored ailing faith, and it has uncovered crucial evidence that our side has the bottle and the resilience needed to stave off catastrophe. We were a weaker, meeker, friendlier side earlier in the season. There is no doubt in my mind that a spirited Sheffield United side, ears ringing from the yearning roar of a packed Bramall Lane, would have beaten us before Davies arrived. Today we had to be ugly, cynical and – at times – flagrantly fraudulent. Every substitute disappeared to the far wing, every throw-in took an age, every loose ball was rolled into no man's land at the sound of the referee's whistle. And more importantly than any of that, every single player had to stand tall and do the work of several. Wilson was the only man to let Nottingham Forest down this afternoon. Forest had started the game brightly and were covering a lot of ground to keep United quiet; it was an encouraging fifteen minutes. And then came the moment of sheer absurdity. United won a disputable free kick and Greg Halford made off with the ball under his arm. Wilson tried to retrieve it, and after a few words in anger he dropped his forehead on to Halford's – three yards away from the referee. It was more of a head-

shove than a headbutt, and it didn't warrant the theatrical collapse. But it was a clear and obvious red card, and I'd expect any footballer in 2009 to do exactly what Halford did. What followed was virtually an entire game of frayed nerves and heart-stoppers. If the game was played back now, United would probably look fairly ordinary – a strong side having an off day, and feeling the effects of a long run of success. But during the game they seemed likely to score from every single attack. Forest faced what seemed like an incessant stream of corners and crosses. The defending was desperate, tireless and admirable. From the moment Wilson was sent off the defence set up like a brick wall and threw themselves in front of every stray ball. In midfield it was a triumph for substance over style. Cohen and Osbourne covered a lot of ground and tried to plot an escape route into United's half, Perch was fearless. Davies ran the show from the touchline. He took every free header and stray ball as a personal insult and made astute changes at crucial times. Very occasionally he would hide at the back of the dugout, waiting to explode if the seemingly inevitable United goal came. Billy hasn't given up yet, by any means. His venomous, rumbustious spirit and self belief could be what drags us over the finishing line with our necks spared. It's going to be incredibly tight. We may well need two wins from three games and it's an awful lot to ask. But with the bottle and resilience of this afternoon, it can be done. And what a difference it could make to the future of Nottingham Forest.Ratings: Smith – 8 – several excellent saves and a lot more challenging for crosses. His distribution let down his performance, giving United the ball far too easily with meandering balls to nobody. Davies almost choked with fury about it at one stage, even turning to berate the goalkeeping coach. Gunter – 8 – his quality showed today, in sporadic bursts forward and some tough defending. Chambers – 8 – a lot tougher, and a lot more composed, than we have come to expect. Breckin – 8 – we needed his experience and composure. Morgan – 8 – tough, forceful and bold. Never once buckled under the pressure. Wilson - / - nonsensical stupidity. Slap him with the maximum fine. Cohen – 8.5 – spirit wise, he's probably the best player in the country to have in a battle like this. Osbourne – 8 – outstanding, again. Perch – 7.5 – gave a lot to the cause this afternoon, but he gave the ball away a few times – triggering panic. Blackstock – 7 – not the work rate I'd have liked, but that's not his style. He was a useful target for a midfield that had no objective beyond finishing the game. Garner – 7 – did everything he could in difficult circumstances. McCleary – 7, McGugan – 7, Anderson – 7.Report by Alex Campbell

Missed chances came back to haunt Notts County once again with a 2-0 defeat at home to Grimsby Town. Mariners goalkeeper Wayne Henderson kept the Mariners in the game with a string of first half saves before Rob Atkinson headed them ahead early in the second. A controversial second goal late on from Danny Boshell wrapped up the points to condemn County to a second-straight home defeat. Ian McParland recalled

experienced defender Michael Johnson to the County starting line-up for the showdown against the Mariners after he missed Saturday's defeat at Rotherham with a calf problem. Johnson replaced Adam Tann at the heart of the defence in the only change from Saturday's 2-1 defeat at the Don Valley Stadium. Grimsby, back by a huge following from Cleethorpes, got the game underway in their red away strip aiming to climb out of the relegation zone following Chester's 1-0 win at Accrington earlier in the day. A scuffed shot from Forte into the arms of Henderson was County's first effort of the game - but on five minutes came the first talking point of the game. Weston got away down the left and used his pace to superb effect to fly past Bennett and seemed to be brought down by the Mariners' skipper but the Referee was having none of it and turned away

into the game and forced two corners, but couldn't create any opportunities. Another corner created a good chance for Proudlock on sixty-five minutes for Grimsby but his header was straight at Pilkington. Ian McParland threw Sean Canham into the fray for the final fifteen minutes in place of Michael Johnson as County looked to salvage something from the game. Grimsby were proving to be far more solid at the back than they were in the first-half and were giving very little away. A controversial second goal for Grimsby secured the three points for the Mariners when Conlon slipped Boshell away inside the box and he slotted home. The goal was originally ruled out for offside, but after consulting the Referee for a good thirty seconds the goal was given to Notts' frustration. All County's staff on the bench argued the decision while Grimsby ran away in celebration. From there on in Grimsby sat back on their lead and were quite to content to see the game out in their fight for survival. Phil Picken tested Henderson from long range in search of a consolation goal late on but his handling was again excellent. County must dust themselves down after an Easter programme that yielded no points and prepare to go again at Morecambe on Saturday..

CENTRAL MIDLANDS LEAGUEForest Town maintained their lead at the top of the Buckingham Insurance Supreme Division, two goals by Mark Carter gave the leaders a great win at Calverton Miners Welfare, 2-0. This result was a blow for the home team who themselves have championship aspirations and the one promotion place. Second placed Newark Town had to rely on a last minute goal at Blidworth Welfare, to take three precious points; overall the visitors could count themselves fortunate, because the home team certainly did not deserve to lose an entertaining encounter. Radcliffe Olympic moved up to third place, they also scored a late winner at Nettleham, Danny Johnson scoring the all important goal with just four minutes remaining, to give his side a 3-2 victory. Jason Tinkler and Chris Funnell scored the Nettleham goals. James Spence and Drew Hatton the other

Notts County report continuedNotts' furious appeals from both on the pitch and on the touchline. County started the game confidently and carved out the first clear-cut opening on fifteen minutes but Richard Butcher lacked composure when clean through on goal and blasted straight at Henderson. Forte then had a chance in the six-yard box but Henderson was off his line quickly and blocked the striker's effort with his feet. County were dominating - very much like they were on Saturday at Rotherham - and knew they couldn't afford to let another game pass by dwelling on the chances that came and went. A good run off the shoulder of the last defender by Forte saw the on-loan striker nip the ball around the onrushing Henderson on twenty-three, but defender Atkinson was able to nick the ball off the striker's toe in the 'D' and hoof the ball clear. Hamshaw's right-foot flick at the near post was straight at Henderson on twenty-seven with County still in control. Henderson made a magnificent save from Butcher's twenty-yard thunderbolt on thirty-one minutes and it seemed only a matter of time before County broke the deadlock. Four minutes later the former Republic of Ireland U21 international was performing heroics, this time denying Forte from eight yards following neat play between Hamshaw and then Picken down the right. The Mariners felt an apparent handball outside the area by Pilkington in first-half injury-time should have resulted in a free-kick, but instead Referee Mr Heywood waved their appeals away. County got the second-half underway - attacking towards the Victoria Centre Kop Stand - still looking to break the deadlock. Clapham tested Henderson five minutes into the second period from long-range but the goalkeeper made routine stop from the left-back. After all County's pressure they were made to pay on fifty-two minutes when centre-back Rob Atkinson rose highest from a Hegarty corner to glance the visitors ahead. He rose highest and he got enough direction on the ball to guide the ball beyond Pilkington's despairing dive and send the large number of away fans wild. Grimsby's confidence rose and they enjoyed a good spell without creating any further chances. By the hour Notts were forcing their way back

Kinsley Boys had a comfortable 3-0 win over Yorkshire Main. Goals for Darren Field, Lee Wagstaff and a penalty converted by Liam Rhodes. Kimberley Town's recent improved form came to an abrupt end at Hatfield Main, the home team romped to a 7-2 success with Liam Hardy hitting four, Luke Brownbridge hit a brace and Lee Winterman added to 'The Stags' gloom. Nathan Ryan and Arron Russell scored the Kimberley goals. Westella & Willerby lead at the top of the Black Dragon Premier Division looks precarious, second placed Louth Town are now only three points behind the East Riding club, with four matches in hand. With Westella without a match the Lincolnshire club made it nineteen wins from twenty games, winning 6-2 at Church Warsop Miners Welfare.

Calverton drop to fifth. Both sixth placed Ollerton Town and seventh Sutton Town AFC are not out of the championship picture, Ollerton however, dropped two vital points at Southwell City. The home team led at half time through a goal by Chris Atkins, Dean Hankey salvaged a vital point for the visitors in the second half. Sutton Town AFC had a resounding victory at second from bottom Harrowby United, the first half was pretty even with the visitors only one goal to the good at half time but after the interval it was one way traffic, with the home team's defence under constant siege, the final score of 7-0 reflected

THE ROBOT LIE DETECTOR!Mike was a salesman's delight when it came to any kind of unusual gimmick. One day Mike came home with another one of his unusual purchases. It was a robot lie detector. About 5:30 that afternoon their 11 year old son returned home from school over 2 hours late."Where have you been"? asked Mike."Several of us went to the library to work on an extra credit project," said Timmy. The robot then walked around the table and slapped Timmy, knocking him completely out of his chair."Son," said Mike, "this robot is a lie detector, now tell us where you really were after school.""We went to Billy's house and watched a movie." said Timmy."What did you watch?" asked Timmy's mother Mary."The Ten Commandments." answered Timmy. The robot went around to Timmy and once again slapped him, knocking him off his chair once more. With his lip quivering, Timmy got up, sat down and said, "I am sorry I lied. we really watched a pornographic dvd movie.""I am ashamed of you son," said Mike. "When I was your age, I never lied to my parents."The robot then walked around to Mike and delivered a whack that nearly knocked him out of his chair.Mary doubled over in laughter and said, "Boy, did you ever ask for that one! After all, he is your son!"With that the robot whacked Mary and knocked her off her chair! The naughty girl!LITTLE HARRYLittle Harry returns from school and says he got an 'F' in arithmetic.'Why'? asks the father.'The teacher asked 'How much is 2 x 3', so I said 6', replies Harry.'But that's right' says his father.'Yeah, but then she asked me, 'How much is 3 x 2''What's the f*'kin’ difference?' asks the father.'That's what I said' replied Harry.

Paul Watts added another four to his seasons total for Louth, Sam Smith notching the other two. The other Semi Final sees two Premier clubs, Parramore Sports and Westella & Willerby meeting at Harworth on Wednesday, April 15th, both matches kick off at 7.45 p.m. The final at Alfreton is now on Bank Holiday Monday May 4th Kick off 3 p.m. With Parramore Sports without a game, fourth placed Kirkby Town are now only six points adrift of the Sheffield area club, with three games in hand. Kirkby led 1-0 at half time at home against Kiveton Park, but the visitors could not stop Kirkby's ace striker, John Upton who hit a hat trick and with further goals from Scott Pratt and Matt Fletcher, the home team cruised to a 5-0 win. Sixth placed Newark Flowserve had an enjoyable trip to East Riding club, Hutton Cranswick United, goals by Danny Rose, Callum Fraser and Rhys Lewis gave the Nottinghamshire club a 3-0 victory. A good win for Bentley Colliery at Thoresby Colliery Welfare, the Doncaster area club won 3-2. Not so good for another club in the same area, Thorne Colliery, after a midweek win over Bentley, Thorne lost at home to the bottom club, Bulwell Town 2-0, a result that looks like Thorne will again have to apply for re-election. Richard Johnson and Lee Allen scored the Bulwell goals. Parkhouse got the better of Phoenix Sports and Social, the Derbyshire club won 2-1. Ashley Barber and a penalty by Chris Sharman for Parkhouse. Ryan Moorcroft scored for Phoenix. Carlton Town Reserves moved nearer to the title of the Abacus Lighting Reserves Supreme Division, two goals for Steve Chaplin in Carlton's 5-0 home win over Forest Town Reserves. Heanor Town Reserves, who are in second place, defeated Graham St Prims Reserves 3-2 at the Town Ground. James Perry, Sam Dilks and Ben Holmes on target for Heanor. The title could go down to the 'wire' in the Abacus Lighting Reserves Premier Division, leaders Southwell City Reserves held on to their three point lead, despite being without a game, second placed Radcliffe Olympic Reserves crashed to a 6-3 defeat at Yorkshire Main Reserves, this despite leading 2-1 and 3-2. Bradley Mills hit a hat trick for the home team, James Handley added a brace and John Williams also got on the score sheet. Paul Moran scored all three Radcliffe goals. Radcliffe remain in second place, but three teams Clipstone Welfare Reserves, who won 6-1 at home against Bulwell Town Reserves, Craig Buchanan was another player to score a hat trick, Yorkshire Main Reserves and Kiveton Park Reserves are close on their 'heels'. Kiveton had a field day at the expense of Newark Town Reserves, hat tricks for both, Danny Harrison and Simon Toseland and with Simon Walker also scoring twice, the home team ran

EAST MIDLANDS COUNTIES LEAGUEKirby Muxloe moved four points clear at the top of the table after their 3-1 win at Hinckley Downes.Andy Harrison, Jamie Mason and Chris McCathie were on target for the Ratby Lane side with Luke Bradshaw netting for the hosts. Nearest challengers Borrowash Victoria looked to be heading for a straightforward win at Holwell Sports when goals from Channon North and Jamie Pawley fired them into a 2-0 interval lead. But the home side had other ideas and fought back to draw 2-2 thanks to two goals from Jay Kirby. Holbrook MW leap-frogged Gedling Town into third place after seeing off their rivals 3-0, Rob Harrison, Sam Kellogg and Dave Moon all on target. There was a nine-goal thriller at the other end of the table as Blackwell MW beat relegation rivals Ellistown 5-4 for just their third win of the season. Paul Eden scored twice for the visitors while Richard Groves was the Blackwell hero, netting the first and last his winner coming in the final minute. Graham St Prims drew 1-1 at Radford and it was the same scoreline at Bardon Hill Sports where Gedling MW were the visitors. Ibstock United fought out a goalless draw at Greenwood Meadows while St Andrews eased to a 4-1 win at home to Heanor Town with Ashley Warner and Danny Henfrey sharing the goals between them.

Southwell City 1 Ollerton Town 1Southwell City shared the points with visitors Ollerton Town in an entertaining encounter at the Memorial ground last Saturday. The match started at a brisk pace with City passing the ball well in a three man attack utilising the speed of wide men Dominic Williams on the left and Ben Porter on the right to good effect with Chris Atkins operating in the middle. Town on the other hand were sending in long balls to target man Lee Wilson in an attempt to feed his fellow striker Dean Hankey. City opened the scoring mid-way through the first half when all three strikers linked up well. A penetrating ball from mid-field found Ben Porter who then passed the ball into space invitingly for Dominic Williams on the left. Williams cut inside the box and passed the ball to Chris Atkins and with his back to goal Atkins turned his marker and slotted the ball between Town keeper James Fletcher and the near post to give City a well earned lead. Nine minutes later and City were presented an opportunity to extend their lead when the Town defence underestimated the speed of Dominic Williams. A loose back pass to keeper Fletcher was very nearly intercepted by Williams but Fletcher was able to clear the ball much to the relief of the Town spectators. From the resultant clearance Lee Wilson was put in the clear with only City keeper Darren

Sharpe to beat. Sharpe made an excellent save at the feet of ex-City striker Wilson to maintain City's lead. Moments later Town's manager Donovan Gethfield was forced to replace the injured Rob Evans with Terry Annable.Ollerton changed tactics for the second half as they pushed men forward, compressed the mid-field and dominated possession. As early as the 46th minute substitute Terry Annable came close with a firm header. Ollerton continued to dominate and on 51 minutes the City defence cracked under the constant pressure when Dean Hankey was found un-marked in the City box and he slotted the ball across the face of the City goal out of reach of City's Darren Sharpe. The City keepers despairing dive resulted in him injuring his shoulder and play was interrupted for five minutes in order for him to receive treatment. City boss Mark Nangle replaced Dominic Williams with Ally Haynes in an attempt to freshen up the City attack. As a result the match became a more even affair and City began to create chances again. On 71 minutes Town keeper Fletcher denied City with a double save to prevent the home side regaining the lead when Chris Atkins broke forward and Fletcher made a good save at the striker's feet, the ball however fell to the advancing Ally Haynes whose shot was brilliantly saved again by Fletcher. Following an injury to Daniel Severn City boss Nangle replaced the mid-fielder with Alex Turpin. Moments later however Nangle was forced to withdraw the injured Sharpe in the City goal and bring on his final substitute Nick Morgan. City striker Chris Atkins volunteered to replace Sharpe in goal. Town saw their opportunity to take all the points with City's makeshift keeper. The City defence protected Atkins well and it was Ben Porter at the other end who came close to scoring but again Fletcher was on hand to protect his goal. In the final stages of the match City could well have snatched the points when a fierce shot from Ally Haynes was too hot for Fletcher as he spilled the ball but unfortunately for City no one was following up.

Pinxton 2Harworth CI 1Pinxton stopped Harworth going into 3rd place in the league and more or less ended their chance of any reward for their efforts this season thanks to a strong workman like performance that for the first time in Pinxton's history cements their worth and place in the Supreme division of the Central Midland's football league. Harworth came to Wharf rd with a great record this season and what's more important is that they beat Sutton Town AFC 3-1 in the league last week, Pinxton's opponents in the final of the Phoenix Trophies Floodlit cup Final at the end of the month, so this win should give Pinxton hope of an upset to favourites Sutton in the final. Pinxton's top scorer Daniel Marriott's took only 16 minutes to put Pinxton in front thanks to the pin point cross from Josh Parker wide on the right to the far post for Danny Evans to head down into the path of Marriott 6 yards out who volleyed the ball into the top left hand corner. But let's not forget the Pinxton defence in this game because Harworth's forwards were strong and made sure that every time any of Pinxton's defenders cleared the ball they were hit by a mostly fair but bone crunching tackles, In fact man of the match Ben Newman, skipper Jamie Renshaw, Steve Darcy and the persistent Josh Parker just wouldn't coward out of any of the head turning tackle's, the result could well have been so different, Pinxton are without doubt doing so well this season because of the 16 games this season

without conceding, to stress the doggedness of Pinxton's defense was for all to see on the hour when after a brilliant cross by the Harworth right winger to substitute Shay Dunning at the back post who was 8 yards out with what looked like a open net, Dunning headed the ball goal bound and from nowhere Josh Parker just threw himself into the path of the ball and just got enough on the ball to direct the ball round the post to thwart the best move of the game by Harworth. The game was tight, but Pinxton always looked in control and it was no surprise when super sub, Joe Riley secured all three points on 76, Riley started the move in his own half with a header to the effervescent young striker Jay Cooper who is just growing better and better with each game he plays, 17 year old Cooper who really does represent some of Pinxton's finest moments took the Harworth defence on, and from the right hand side crossed the ball to Joe Riley who had carried on his run to the edge of the 18 yard box, Riley rapped his foot around the half chance and managed to fire the ball into the bottom left hand corner of Harworth's goal, the keeper managed to get a touch to slow the ball down but could only watch as the ball strolled into the bottom left hand corner. Pinxton's season has come of age just of late and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Pinxton could finish this season on a high, and progress into next season and really give Pinxton a realistic chance of success in the league if the players stick it out and give it real go next season. Pinxton are away at Rolls Royce Leisure 25th April for the last league game of the season, then on Wednesday 29th April Pinxton fc are at Lee's lane, South Normanton, for the final of the Phoenix Trophies Floodlit cup Final against Sutton Town AFC 7.45pm kick off to close the season.

Blidworth MW 1Newark Town 2A last gasp winner for the third time in four weeks saw Town get a crucial win after an indifferent performance at Mansfield Road. The Blues made two changes to the starting line up from the 1-1 draw at Forest Town in midweek, with Dave Issott and Luke Parsons coming in for Ben Barnard and the injured Chris Self, who was on the bench. Town started the match brightly, and had a half chance on 7 minutes, when a shot from long range by Craig Roche was deflected over the bar. Although Town dominated, there were few clear cut opportunities. It took until the 17th minute for Newark to get their next opening, with Steve Carty having his shot blocked by Roper. Town had another chance five minutes later, most finished off a six man move on 27 minutes, but he fired his effortFull report on www.ballsmania.net

But as the ten men tired Report by John WheatPMR took advantage and scored 2 late goals through Shannon Burt to .lead 4-3 but they owe the three points to Ray who pulled off a blinding save to deny Southbank a much deserved point. EMPAL - MEDICS GAIN A MUCH NEEDED POINT !Nottingham Medics A struggling at the wrong end of Division One snatched a valuable point against Brinsthorpe Rangers in a 1-1 draw Rangers looked to have cemented fourth spot over Total Reclaims Demolition despite recent loss of form. The title race is now down to a three horse race between leaders Burton Joyce A, Nottingham Law School and Radcliffe Olympic (Sun). The connecting factor between all three sides is their youth and physical strength which has clearly set them apart from their challengers. Both Burton and Radcliffe have their “star” players at a senior level on a Saturday benefiting from superior coaching and fitness training. Law School in the same vein have talented individuals postgraduates from Universities all around the country. The race is wide open with the lottery of mid week games becoming an important factor in putting “quality” sides out on a Tuesday and Thursday. Joyce have the Empal Cup Final as Radcliffe have the County Cup Final at the back of their minds while the students have important Final Exams to contend with!In division 2 in mid week saw match of the season when first played second as unbeaten leaders Arnold Cross Keys went head to head with in form Fox & Crown at Oxclose Lane. The 1-1 scoreline was a fair reflection on ninety minutes of pulsating end to end action. Crown dominated the first twenty minutes without exception and took an early eighth minute lead through star midfielder Luke Jennings. The ex Gedling midfielder has settled well with Crown coinciding with their return to form and journey to the Empal Cup Final. Jennings picked up a loose clearance from Keys and from a full thirty yards unleashed an exocet like drive right in the top corner! Keys finally got their act together in the latter stages of the first half forcing a series of corners and speculative shots. The second half saw both sides pressing for the win with both keepers pulling off impressive saves as the thunder clouds drifted across the pitch. Crown looked to have pulled off a sensational win until the eighty-eighth minute when a cheap free kick was conceded wide right. The resulting cross in the “mixer” caused havoc in the Crown defence and with keeper Atkin parrying a shot, Paul Stephenson marking his return to the side blasted home from close range. The last two minutes were frantic with both sides seeking the additional two points but at the death a draw was well appreciated by both outfits in the post match debate. FC Grey Olympico went down 2-0 at home to Highfield Park Rangers as their poor run continues. Pollard and Mullen for Rangers. Unbeaten Wollaton Pirates of division 3 are fifteen for fifteen and are on for a League and County Cup “Double” should they continue their awesome form. The league run extends to thirty even Empal matches now since they joined the League! Punjab Colts despite recent hiccups have games in hand over challengers Chequers United and should clinch second promotion spot as a result. It's a two horse race in Division Four as St Anns battle against Empal disciplinary measures to maintain their lead over rivals Caythorpe. NOTTS SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE - TOP 2 PULLING AWAY !Scots Grey and Clumber are putting significant space between themselves and the pack at the top of the Premier Division. Following their 3-1 KO Cup semi-final win over Arnold in mid-week, Clumber made it eight league wins on the trot with a 4-2 success over lowly Nuthall with a couple of strikes from top scorer Carl Westcarr and one each from Jason Henry and Viv O'Connor, as Colin Byrne and Aaron Hooton replied.Jamie Moore, Phil Bicknell, Juree Staples and Alan Jefferies were on target for leaders; Scots Grey, as they overcame Arnold 4-0.All the results in Division One were purely academic as the top four have already completed their season and cannot be challenged.

Manchester 23 Nottingham Rugby 49 Nottingham secured the bonus point after just half an hour of this game, but the first half in particular was very much a mixed bag. Going forward they looked capable of scoring almost at will. But in defence they allowed Manchester a little too much freedom. An Early attack from David Jackson came to nothing when he knocked on, but Nottingham quickly regained possession for Tim Molenaar to break the defensive line before offloading to Dan Montagu, who's pass out to the unmarked Nic Rouse was judged to have gone forward. But they kept play in the home 22 to force close range lineout, from which Tim Taylor almost got through before feeding Charlie Davies, who sidestepped the defence to open the scoring. Jack's conversion made it 0-7 in the eighth minute. Molenaar again almost broke through, but again them move ended with a forward pass. But the pressure eventually saw the Nottingham skipper double the lead after a quickly taken lineout from Ben Thompson, with Jacko making it 0-14 with the conversion. But Manchester hit them on the break and would have scored had centre Chris Parrott not slipped as he took a pass. But he kept possession to set up an attack in the left hand corner which eventually brought a try alongside the posts for Matthew O'Regan, with winger Gareth Wynne making it 7-14 with the conversion. Taylor then hacked a loose ball forward an almost got through only for play to be brought back for a Manchester scrum. But Nottingham won the ball against the head and moved it wide where Charlie Hayer showed good pace to beat the defence and touch down, Jacko again converting. Dan Montagu put the defence under pressure with a kick into the home 22, and created the chance for Ash Elphinston to secure the bonus point with try number four. Jacko again converted to make it 7-28 on the half hour. But Phil Eggleshaw was then sin binned for a late challenge and Manchester got themselves back into the game with three quick penalties from Wynne making it 16-28 at the break. A try form Alex Loney minutes after the restart, and again converted by Jacko, should have seen Nottingham reassert control, but within minutes the home side cancelled out that score. Again they missed one chance, this time through a poor pass, but managed to keep possession with replacement Sion Williams crossing. Wynne added the conversion to make it 23-35. Nottingham were back on the attack though winning a penalty on halfway for Taylor to kick to touch deep into home territory. The pack drove forward and eventually Sam McDonald forced his way over, Jacko's conversion going in off the post. A long spell of Nottingham pressure brought several half chances but the spirited home defence kept them out. And it was Manchester who almost had the last word as a breakaway brought them a chance in the right hand corner. But Montagu and replacement Tim Usasz managed to hold them out and clear the danger. It proved to be their last chance as Nottingham replied to round off the scoring. A quick change of direction from replacement Chris Pilgrim saw him wrong foot the defence and make ground, and with Usasz up in support the ball was quickly fed to Jacko who finished it off, and then added the conversion. Not the prettiest of performances from Nottingham then, but they still managed to win comfortably despite making many changes to their starting line up. Youngsters

Charlie Davies and Phil Eggleshaw can feel pleased with their efforts, as can Jamie Barnard, who got on for the last fifteen minutes. And despite not being at anything like their best Nottingham took their points tally for the season past the one thousand mark.

TRY-iT Places up for GrabsRushcliffe Borough Council, in partnership with Nottingham Rugby, officially launched their TRY-iT programme on Thursday 9th April at Nottingham Rugby's training ground at Lady Bay. A third of kids in Rushcliffe aged ten and eleven are overweight. Rushcliffe Borough Council is working with Nottingham

Rugby Club to tackle this health issue with the TRY-iT programme which kicks off on Wednesday 6 May, 5pm at Rushcliffe Leisure Centre. TRY-iT will see ten kids and their families take more exercise and eat more healthily encouraged by their rugby buddy who will keep them on track. It's a programme of two halves - the first part is the MEND programme (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it). The second half is the 'conversion for life' where the slimmer young person will take their buddy into school and show others how they did it. Families take part in fun 2-hour sessions, twice a week for 10 weeks. The programme helps them improve their eating and exercise habits (swimming, dancing etc) to improve fitness, nutrition and self-esteem. This is the first time MEND has run in Rushcliffe thanks to funding from Rushcliffe Borough Council and NHS Nottinghamshire County. Ten free places are available on the course worth up to £400 per child. Families in te res ted in par t i c ipa t ing shou ld emai l

On Friday 3rd April Rolls Royce Hucknall (Works) played a charity football match for Hannah Newham memorial trophy, which took place at Rolls Royce Hucknall Leisure Pitch at 1pm. The teams were picked from an annual match known as the young verses old. This year the under 35 year olds were called the Whipper Snappers and the ovea 35 year olds being the Mavericks. This years captains were to be Alan Fletcher for the Whipper Snappers and Gary Newham (Hannah's father) for the Mavericks. The snappers were a squad of 14 players featuring Calverton Miners Welfare keeper J Thelan, Lion revived right back R Shilton, R R Leisure Villa left winger C Orridge (Curley) and midfield general Ash Clarke among others. The Mavericks had however a squad of 23 men with some great veteran experience with former semi pro's included Gaz Ottewell and Daz Wardle. The tension lifted as the match kicked off, the Mavericks quickly took control of the game and in the 3rd minute they strung 4 great passes together into the 18 yard box but keeper collected well, after this early flurry from the Mavericks the Whipper Snappers regained composure and press on the attack, switching it from right to left, Robbo floated a ball over to the back post and Adey Miles handles it in the box, forgetting he wasn't the keeper for the Mavericks, ref Ross Brown blows for a penalty after the Snappers appealed and Paul Watts steps up to the ball and puts it in the bottom right making it 1 - 0. The

Mavericks went straight on the attack and Daz Wardle strides into the box were A Hatton had to put it behind for a corner, a quick corner caught the Whipper Snappers off guard and Gary Newham fired it in low and hard at the front post from acute angle to level it up at 1 - 1. It stayed pretty level for the next 10 minutes, Jimbob did come out of his 18 yard box and head it out for a throw in but the Whipper Snappers went on the counter attack on 20 minutes were Ash Clarke unleashed a 20 yard shot but the Mavericks keeper B Palin pulls off a great save and puts it behind for a corner. Subs rolled on and off for each team until half time, but nobody broke the deadlock at 1 - 1. After half time the Snappers start with some early pressure on the 46th minute Ash Clarke gains a free kick and floats one into the box but Mavericks clear their lines, at the 60th minute Ash Clarke again releases a 25 yard screamer and this time finds the back of the net to put the Whipper Snappers 2 - 1 up, on 72 minutes Mavericks get their 5th corner of the game and it was swung in from the left to find the head of Paul "Dougal" Harvey who rose like a Salmon and headed it just over. On 75 minutes the Whipper Snappers made 4 subs which made an immediate impact, Triggers played a searching ball down the wing for "Gay" Craig who squared it into the 18 yard box to Bungle who dummied it and left it for Matt Bailey to lob it over the keeper from the edge of the 18 yard box to make it 3 - 1. In the last minute Mavericks keep their faith and push forward and were awarded yet another corner, Daz Wardle drifts in a Beckham like corner straight onto the head of Johno who somehow misses the target from 6 yards as it flies wide. The referee blows for full time and young Whipper Snappers win 3 - 1 for the second year running this time taking the Hannah Newham Memorial Trophy for their victory, will the Mavericks return next year to face the ever ageing under 35 year olds Whipper Snappers. The BallsMania man of the match was awarded to Gary Newham who received his BallsMania T-Shirt and also collected the £605 raised to be donated to charity. A big thank you to everyone who took part in this event and also a big thank you to all the people who donated prizes for the raffle and for organising this event. Anthony Blagg (aka Bungle)

BRUCE & COREY SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINEJust 48 hours after the disappointment of losing to The Steelers at the Trent FM Arena, GMB Panthers were announcing the re-signing of Bruce Richardson alongside coach Corey Neilson. Dubbed “the most wanted player in British Ice Hockey”, Richardson makes things happen for the Panthers and claims to have unfinished business to take care of. Richardson moved to the GMB Panthers last summer and picked up a host of club awards this season. He was coach Neilson's right-hand man and the pair steered the club to the play-off final and third place in the standings, pipped for runners-up spot only on number of games won. Said Bruce last week: “I have enjoyed a great bonding with the organisation and the fans and I want to keep that going. I love the organisation here in Nottingham. We've got unfinished business because we didn't lift any trophies but we had an exciting year, we provided lots of entertainment, and we are aiming to add to the trophy cabinet next season.”

“I like the city, my family love everything here. When you play for Nottingham you have everything you need off ice which helps bring success on the ice. It is fun to play for and organisation which has so many fans in building and which is so professional.”

Added coach Corey Neilson: “Bruce is a great professional. Dedicated, experienced and a workaholic. He has drive and ambition and is an example to everyone. After I agreed terms myself, the organisation made the return of Bruce Richardson a priority and we're pleased to have fended off the interest from other teams. Just about everyone wanted to steal him, but Bruce has loyalty amongst his many qualities and he'll be back with us next season. It is great news and further proof, if anyone needed it, of the ambitions of this club.” Coach Neilson will be talking to the other players from the

season 2008-9 roster in the coming days and we expect to have more announcements sooner rather than later.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPSClarke and Meyers score in GB opening defeat. After a goalless first period David Clarke fired GB ahead in the second only for the Ukraine side to equalise before the second break and then take the lead in the third. Danny Meyers blasted home an equaliser on the powerplay but two late goals for the Ukraine rounded off the scoring at the World Championships

Division in Poland. Clarke and Meyers earned praise from coach Paul Thompson. Final score GB 2 Ukraine 4.

GB Coach bemoans loss to Italians. Great Britain lost their second straight game in Poland at the World Championships going down 5-2 to the much fancied Italians. It was a comfortable victory for the Italians and GB Coach Paul Thompson said afterwards he was bitterly disappointed that his side hadn't shown up until the third period by which time it was too late to salvage anything from the game. Shields and Dowd scored the goals.

Caddies vs Golf Carts... only one winner for me!

Having recently enjoyed a trip away with a few of the lads, I must say I detest golf carts with a passion. I love to walk with the wind at my back and a faithful bag carrier plodding behind. That way, I have more time to notice the sights, sounds, smells of the countryside and after a bad night in the curry house, my playing partners!

The only wildlife you can see from a speeding vehicle is the 'roadkill' that's been flattened by the cart in front of you, not to mention the empty drink bottles and Mars Bar wrappers. It's true that carts won't show up late, give you the wrong yardage due to most of them now having satellite navigation (what's that all about),

Golf Club), would take me to one of the local ProAms to caddie for him. During school holidays, I even got to go on road trips around the midland circuit, thus gaining limited membership to the magical underworld of the professional golfer and his caddie. I say limited membership, because to them I was a snot-nosed little junior who was doing one of them out of a living. I would have to wait some three or four years until I turned pro myself before I got any respect from this bunch. There was one old bag-rat who used to terrify me. He was 6.3', with one eye looking at me and the other looking for me, fond of his hip flask and park drive cigarettes, if nothing stronger was available. "Keep those bloody clubs quiet," he would growl at me as I clanked along, the bag bouncing on my hip with every footfall. He, on the other hand, shuffled along in slippery leather-soled shoes, the bag hanging from his bony shoulder like a baby in a hammock. Not one club touched another. Golfers and good caddies have a lot in common. A caddie needs a good grip on reality because his player often doesn't have one. And, he needs a good stance, as in knowing where to take it. Just think, you can even blame your caddy for a bad shot, can you blame a golf cart?

I fully understand that golf courses need the revenue, around £20 for a cart (50 euros in Marbella), but can we have this much fun with a golf cart … I don't think so. Come on golf courses, please do your bit for solving local unemployment and employ caddies and park your golf carts for good! Paul Wharmsby, The Golf Lounge Mansfield

talk too much, or demand a tip. I'll still take caddies anytime, that's how I started playing golf and I wouldn't change that for anything. For the tidy sum of on average £1.00 a round, I would pack the sack for the members at Notts Golf Club (Hollinwell) and then be able to play the course on a Monday for 25p… how I miss the good old days.

Growing up at Nottingham City, I was the pro shop kid, always hanging around the workshop, learning how to replace the now-obsolete whipping around the neck of a wooden club. Or, I was changing grips, my hands sticky and smelly with double-sided tape and petrol. Come to think of it, I probably unwittingly lost billions of brain cells due to solvent abuse. No wonder I couldn't do my homework. Sometimes, the club pro, the legendary Cyril Jepson (now at Hucknall

lightweights are used and exercises are done back-to-back with little or no rest between. You will have to build two types of endurance in order for your body to perform well when you lift weights. The two types of endurance are:Muscular Endurance: This is the ability of your muscles to contract over and over during an exercise and to effectively utilize the maximum number of muscle fibers possible. Cardiovascular Endurance: This relates to your circulatory system. Your heart and lungs need to be able to efficiently bring oxygen to the muscle sites during exercise and also carry away waste products such as lactic acid. These two types of endurance are actually complementary and quite necessary. For example, what is the use of having excellent cardiovascular endurance if your muscles can't keep up while you exercise? And on the other hand, how well will your muscles perform during a lifting exercise if they have incredible muscular endurance but your cardiovascular system is unable to deliver the oxygen they need?Benefits vs. Limitations of Aerobic and Anaerobic ExercisesRemember Aerobic exercises do not directly help build strength, power and muscle mass that a bodybuilder desires. In fact, excessive aerobic activity may result in undesirable loss in muscle mass, strength and speed along with the desired fat loss. However, even though aerobic exercises cannot achieve significant muscle mass buildup, they do prepare the muscles for enduring the intense exertion in strength- and muscle-building anaerobic exercises. The results achieved by anaerobic exercises like weight lifting and strength training are exactly what a bodybuilder desires: low body fat percentage, buildup of muscle mass, and increased strength, power and speed. In fact, increased muscle mass helps burn more fat even when you are doing nothing. However, the only flipside of anaerobic exercises, if one may call it so, is that they require a strong foundation of aerobic fitness to begin with – otherwise you would tend to, as they say, “hit the wall” quickly. So the answer to the question “aerobic or anaerobic?” is, therefore, obvious: There is no choice to be made between the two; it's got to be both aerobic and anaerobic if you want to be a successful bodybuilder – aerobic for enhancing cardiorespiratory endurance and reducing body fat, and anaerobic for power and muscle mass buildup.

When the body uses fat for energy it also breaks down muscle. Since muscle cells burn energy and fat cells store it, you need muscle to use energy that would otherwise be stored as fat! Now, anaerobic training, the kind where you push yourself hard for short periods of time, uses a different metabolic system to supply the muscles with energy, which trains the body to respond in a different way to exercise. The benefits of Anaerobic Training are:1. Increased Cardiovascular Capacity 2. Increased Cardiovascular Recovery Ability3. Strength Gains4. Power Gains5. Improved Speed6. Decreased Body FatThe liabilities:1. Increased Risk of Injury in Untrained People2. Requires a Good Aerobic Foundation When we look at all of the elements of fitness, which include:Endurance • Strength • Flexibility • Power • Speed • Agility • Balance It's easy to see why a combination of aerobic and anaerobic training will do the most for your fitness level. And, since both aerobic and anaerobic training burn fat (anaerobic training actually yields the most post workout fat burning), combining the two in your routine will burn fat and maintain muscle. Not only will you burn fat faster, you will keep the fat off and won't be bored in the process. Not all exercises are purely aerobic or anaerobic. Power lifters probably do the most anaerobic of all exercises. Their goal is to maximize their strength for just one lift. Power lifting exercises usually involve low numbers of repetitions at very heavy weights. It doesn't get much more anaerobic than that. Body builders, on the other hand, tend to focus on sets that fall into the range of anywhere between 5-15 repetitions with some breathing. Their workouts are still very anaerobic. Now, it might be easy to just say that all weight lifting is anaerobic while running is always aerobic. That would be a mistake. Instead of thinking about the type of exercise being performed, think more about the intensity and how it is being executed. Sprinting is a very anaerobic exercise, while weight lifting can actually be aerobic. Circuit training is an excellent example of aerobic weight lifting. In circuit training,

This week as part of BallsMania's Health & Fitness guide we are going to look into the age-old fitness debate of Anaerobic V's Aerobic. If you train regularly the chances are you may already have a good understanding of the two types of exercises but which should you do more of if you're looking to improve all round fitness. Lets look at the 2 types:AEROBICThe word aerobic means in the presence of oxygen. Activities performed at low to moderate intensity - the ones that cause your heart rate to increase for an extended period of time. An example of this would be brisk walking, slow running or, for those into their weight lifting, very low weight high repetition exercises. These types of exercises burn fat or calories to meet their energy needs.ANAEROBICAnaerobic exercises, are high-intensity activities that build up an appreciable oxygen debt. The body uses different metabolic pathways (which I won't bore you with the specifics here) to react to this activity. Anaerobic activities tend to be short duration, burst of activity things where the body just doesn't have time to circulate oxygen to the muscles (less than 90 seconds). Sprints and very heavy low repetition weight lifting are examples of anaerobic exercises. Anaerobic exercises burn a type of muscle sugar called glycogen to meet energy requirements. The benefits of aerobic activity:1. Increased cardiovascular endurance, 2. Decreased body fatThe liabilities are:1. Decreased muscle mass, 2. Decreased speed, 3. Decreased power
