MAY 2019 Vol. 10, Issue 5 Were you born with two left feet? Completely lacking in rhythm? Heres a pro tip – anyone who wants to learn a new skill needs instruction and practice to master it. Ballroom Dancing 101: Learn to Dance! Thats why were so excited to offer Ballroom Dancing 101 starting in May! Instructors (and new Club members) Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz, founder of the Musicians of Maalwyck, and her husband, Charles Schwartz, participated in a local Dancing With The Stars competition in 2011 and have been hooked ever since! They are donating their time and talent to benefit the University Club Foundation with a summer course in Ballroom Dance. Designed to be fun and flexible, there is no long-term commitment required – just an open mind and a willingness to learn. Honestly, most of us feel super awkwardat wed- dings, parties and events where some people move so gracefully across the floor. Well, they werent born with that skill – but they learned, and so can you! Here are some tips to help make Ballroom Dancing 101 a great experience: What to wear – Choose something comfortable and easy to move in – and that you look and feel confident in! Make sure your footwear is clean and comfy. Shoes with thin, smooth (leather) soles and short heels are great for dancing. Open- toed shoes and flip-flops arent recommended. What to bring – A sense of humor. These are beginner lessons and youre not going to be flawless, but thats OK! Try not to get frustrated or upset and just enjoy yourself. Take a break, have some wine and try again. Well start on Thursday, May 9 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. with Fox Trot. Each session will run 2 hours and include one hour of instruction followed by a general dance / practice session. Additional classes will be held on June 6, June 20, July 18, August 14 and a date in September to be announced. Cost is $25 per lesson or sign up for all six for $120.

ANNUAL MEETING — THURSDAY, MAY 16

Greetings University Club Members, Our Annual Membership Meeting this month concludes my term as your Club President. It was a joy and honor to serve our Club in this role, and I thank all of you for this wonderful leadership opportunity. This may sound odd, but supporting the success and activities of others has been my greatest accomplishment these last two years. Early in my term, your Board joined me in the search and hiring of our new General Manager. I so appreciate the vitality Manager Fahy injects into club life, and I applaud her dedication to the success of the Club. As President, I’ve enjoyed becoming better-acquainted with long-time members, and welcoming our newest members. I now know for certain that

University Club members are the most friendly, intellectually curious, and fun of any club around. Additionally, I’m so proud of my fellow Board Members. While they may not miss my marathon meetings, I will miss leading a Board of so many dedicated members. This Board rolled up their sleeves to plan and publicize countless events, cultivate new members, and tackle infrastructure improvements to the clubhouse. These volunteers also generously lent their time and passion over the last two years to confront the challenges to our Club, and offer their support and honest insight. Please join me in supporting the Club’s next leadership team in the year ahead. Sincerely, Amy Kramer President

Meet the Artist in Residence Alicia Lea Opening Reception 1st Friday, May 3 – 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. From May through August 2019, the University Club will present a solo exhibition of the works of Alicia Lea, who will serve as the Club’s fifteenth Artist in Residence. Scheduled to run through Friday, August 30, the exhibition will be on view during public and special events at the Club, and by ap-pointment with the artist, who will receive an honorary membership in the University Club for the duration of the show. Alicia Lea is a native of upstate New York and discovered her love for abandoned architecture while in her first years of college. Trans-ferring to SUNY Albany and taking other courses in multimedia she began to explore the use of texture and space. Her work focuses on the absence, decay, and melancholy of buildings in her current environments. “I start by exploring an area I am in, seeking visual clues of abandonment - peeling paint, broken windows, whole walls knocked down, remnants of old graffiti and foliage growing through the cracks,” said Alicia Lea. “The smells and textures fill my palette as I collect material and take photos allowing myself to absorb the his-tory of the structure to bring back to my studio.” Her work has been featured in shows in Albany, Troy and Utica, and includes a commissioned outdoor work in Albany. In 2018 she produced a mural for the Schenectady Light Opera Company’s production of In the Heights, a benefit for Hurricane Maria relief in Puerto Rico. In 2013, she received the Roanne Kulakoff Award from the University at Albany.

Great news! Many of Artist in Residence Mike Mirsky’s paintings will remain in the Terrace this summer!
