Ballina is the largest town in Mayo.

It has a population of over 10,000 people.

It was founded by Lord Tyrawley in 1723.

The Ballina settlement was originally called

Beleek and existed before the 18th century.

mountains to the east and Nephin to the

west.

THE QUAY

Ballina town developed as a small sea port.

The town expanded when the Quay was built

in 1836.

It explorted live stock to Great Britain.

The Quay is now primarily used for pleasure

boats.

The Quay, Bunree and Ardnaree are the

oldest parts of Ballina.

They were originally part of Co. Sligo until

1898.

MARKET TOWN

A castle was later built in Ballina.

Ballina developed as a market town.

Lord Baron established the linen industry.

He also increased trade in the town by

setting up fairs and markets.

BRIDGE

The Bridge was built in the 19th century.

The town then was built up the other side of

the Moy.

many of Ballina’s street names were

changed to honour those patriots killed

during the struggle.

Knox street was changed to Pearse street.

King Street to O’ Rahilly Street.

CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral was built in 1834

It is built in a Victorian Gothic style.
