Building on his years of experience in Cambodia Nathan feels that Bali is the perfect place in which to offer tours that benefit from his teaching style. Indeed, many who have booked the Bali tour are ‘returnees’: i.e. past clients on his Cambodia tours.

Nathan has always believed that his photography tours should open up a country by presenting opportunities to engage with local people. One of his principle aims, going far beyond teach-ing good camera technique, is to show participants that instead of being a barrier between the photographer and subject, the camera can be used as the key to open doors. Nathan aims to show how, when used sympathetically, the camera can help to establish a vital connection between the traveller and the locals they meet. Nathan always goes out of his way to encour-age opportunities for meeting and interacting with ordinary people going about their everyday lives. This approach offers one of the best chances for a photographer to become more than just a tourist looking on, and instead, someone engaging with local people and in local life. It is this which sets Nathan’s tours apart: they stand out as offering a really rich and exciting experience for participants, including the occasional accompa-nying non-photographer.

The real strength of Bali is that it is full of endless photography highlights but we have also gone out of our way to make sure the itinerary leaves time to meet people and engage with the local way of life as it is lived out in the markets, towns, villages, countryside, homes and temples.

Day 1 JimbaranWe start the tour at Uluwatu temple, one of the top six most important Hindu Temples in Bali. Built in the 11th century, the temple sits on top of the cliffs at the most southern tip of the island. Later in the afternoon we return to Jimbaran, host to one of Bali’s finest stretches of beach and a popular fish mar-ket. Here you will see many small fishing boats landing their catch and local women carrying buckets of fish on their head. With spectacular views the sunsets here are magnificent. The perfect place to get some unique shots. We finish the day with a BBQ on the beach.

Day 2 Kintamani - LovinaIn the morning we visit Goa Gajah , a significant Hindu archaeo-logical site and one of Bali’s hidden gems. It is a mysterious cave full of relics, and ancient bathing pools set amid green rice paddies. Next stop is Petulu Gunung , a sleepy Balinese village-home to thousands of white heron’s that co-habit per-fectly well with the locals. See them ‘up close’ in their nests or feeding their young.

In the afternoon we head for Kintamani, in the northeast of Bali which sits 1,500ft above sea level and offers dramatic views of Mount Batur and the serene Lake Batur. Kintamani has its own climate and the temperature is usually about 15 degrees cooler than down on the coast.

We finish the day at Lovina, a delightful coastal area on the northern point of the island. Hanging on to many of the old traditions, you will see local fishing boats active on the beach.

Day 3 JavaLovina is famous for its Dolphins which come and feed every morning at sunrise. We will go out in small traditional boats to photograph them, hopefully playing up for the cameras. After breakfast we visit the hot springs of Banjar Tegee and bathe in natural hot water at 35 degrees. The water is believed by locals to have strong healing powers.

Our next stop is at Brahma Vihara Arama, the biggest Buddhist temple in Bali. People come from all around the world to medi-tate here. In the afternoon we take an interesting ferry crossing across the Java Strait to Banyuwangi on the island of Java.

Day 4 BedugulThe Ijen Plateau is a spectacular area of volcanic activity and Ijen Kawah is the center point of the mountain range which lies on the west side of Banyuwangi.

We rise at 3am and hike 90 minutes to the Crater Lake. The colour of the water in the lake is scarcely believable being an extraordinary vivid aqua blue. Enroute we will see many workers trudging up and down the mountain carrying sacks of sulphur. The Ijen Crater is certainly one of the great natural wonders of Indonesia.

In the afternoon we return to Bali and cross over the mountain tops of Munduk with spectacular views of the twin lakes below. Half way up the mountain we will stop at a traditional coffee house where they produce the famous Coffee Luwak, the world’s most expensive coffee.

Day 5 UbudBedugul is the common name given to Pura Ulun Dana…(lake Bratan Temple). This is perhaps one the most iconic images of Bali and certainly the most photographed. The temple sits on the western shore of Lake Bratan and it can give the illusion of actually floating on the water.

A 30 minute drive from our hotel in Bedugul takes us to the charming site of Gitgit, a dual waterfall nestled into the rain forest. Two separate waterfalls, both about 35 meters high make fabulous photos with a challenge of some ‘slow shutter speed’ shots.

We lunch at the mountain top and then take a fantastic drive through the back roads to Ubud. We see the locals tending their fields, growing acres of different types of flowers and harvesting the rice.

Day 6 UbudToday is a free day in Ubud to do whatever you want at your own pace. Ubud is a remarkable town in the middle of the island of Bali. For more than a century, it has been the island’s preeminent centre for fine arts, dance and music.

Tonight we dine at The Jazz Café Ubud opened in December 1996 as the first Live Jazz venue on the island of Bali.

Day 7 CandidasaWe start at the Bali Bird Park to witness the largest and finest collection of Indonesian birds in the world plus fantastic birds from Africa & South America. The park provides sanctuary to almost 1000 birds of 250 different species. The park accom-modates an amazing display of flora with more than 2000 tropical plants including 50 varieties of palms alone and attracts numerous butterflies.

After lunch we go to Tegallalang, the most famous of all the rice paddies in Bali. A huge river valley surrounded by coco-nut trees it offers spectacular views of the rice fields and the people working them. Walk up the terraces and get ‘up close and personal’ with the local farmers. Next stop is Klungkung a town of great historical, cultural, and artistic significance. One of the most unique and interesting things here is that all the locals bathe and launder in the river. We reach Candidasa in time for dinner on the beach where locals will perform a traditional Balinese dance.

Day 8 CandidasaCandidasa is a seaside town in eastern Bali that rests on the edge of a fresh water lagoon. We visit Tirta Gangga, one of the world’s most romantic gardens. Gushing springs flowing from beneath an ancient Banyan tree and holy temple fill the myriad of ornamental ponds and swimming pools that grace the Water Palace. The prominent 11 tiered lotus fountain has become the symbol for Tirta Gangga since its creation by the late Raja of Karangasem in 1948.

We then take a gentle 2 hour walk with spectacular views of Mount Agung and the local rice fields. You can chat with local village people and photograph blacksmiths making traditional knives. You have a free afternoon to relax or explore Candidasa.

14 www.nathanhortonphotography.com

Day 9 CandidasaWe take a bus ride through the local villages of Mangis with frequent stops to photograph local markets and village folk as well as some stunning scenery.

Our destination is Tenganan, a traditional Bali Aga (original) village where the residents live their lives just as they did in times gone by. Photograph them making textiles, baskets, leaf books, and calendars in traditional fashion. Buffalos walk freely around the walled village.

For lunch we take a water taxi to White Sand Beach, the most beautiful beach in East Bali. Fine white sand, crystal clear azure water and cute little warungs (restaurants) to feed you. There is nothing commercial about this beach, it is little known, hard to find and you are guaranteed to re-charge your batteries.

Relax…have a fresh young coconut, some barbecued fish. It doesn’t get any better!

Page 16: Bali - Nathan Horton - Photographynathanhortonphotography.com/assets_d/16705/editor_files/files/Bali Tour...3 The real strength of Bali is that it is full of endless photography highlights

15 www.nathanhortonphotography.com

Day 10 Denpasar - JimbaranWe drive to Denpasar to visit the Badung Market. This 24 hour, traditional, market is located across from the Kumbasari Market, separated by the Badung River. This largest and oldest market in Bali provides such local needs as fruit, meat, fish, vegetables, tropical fruits, groceries, spices, clothes, textiles and much more. The locals here are exceptionally friendly and “fun to photo” so you can guarantee to come away with some great traditional shots.

Drink some local Balinese coffee inside the market, try some unusual fruit, or buy some gifts for the folks back home…it's super cheap here. After the market we complete the circle and head back to Jimbaran for final evening and departure party.

Please Note: Itinerary days may be subject to changes or variations.

Nathan Horton has been a professional photographer for 23 years since graduating with a BA Hons in Film, Photography and Video Arts. He has sold work as an artist, worked as an advertising photographer for some of the world’s biggest brands includ-ing Nokia and Lux, and also as an editorial photographer for some of London’s premier magazine titles including Elle, The Times Travel section and Food and Travel magazine.

Nathan has travelled extensively in Asia for over 25 years and has made Cambodia his home since 2006. After many years of experience in this field he has managed to fine-tune some very successful itineraries that deliver in-depth photography tours throughout South East Asia. His tours have been highly praised in Trip Advisor, Na-tional Geographic Traveller and the Weekend Guardian for exploring Asian culture in deeper, richer and more ethical ways than most.

Nathan’s Mission “After living, working and teaching photography in Asia for over 6 years, I have a unique in-depth knowledge of the countries I visit. I have extensively researched my itineraries and pride myself that my tours don’t just drive straight past fabulous photo opportunities but remain flexible enough to make random stops. We often find ourselves pulling up when we see local people harvesting rice, catching fish, climbing coconut trees etc. What makes my tours different is that I consider it my job to help you engage with the country and its people in a much more natural, friendly way than you might ever have imagined”.

Group SizeIn Bali we will never run a tour with more than 10 photographers. A group of no more than 10 is ideal for Nathan and two local guides to give everyone the individual attention they deserve. It also forms a stimulating environment where participants can share their experiences with like minded people.

ReviewsPast participants say it all:

“Nathan is awesome. Don’t hesitate. My girlfriend and I just did the 4 day Angkor Wat tour. What can I say? All expecta-tions blown away. If you are considering doing something with Nathan, don’t hesitate. Book it. Four of my most precious travel days ever.”Jon Bauer, Trip Advisor review 2012

“I booked a tour with Nathan based solely on the reviews here on Trip Advisor - and then wondered how it could possibly live up to the hype. All I can say after completing the tour is that it does - it more than does.”Trip Advisor review 2012

“A great experience of the “Real Cambodia”’Based on Nathans beautiful portfolio I had high hopes for the trip and the images and experiences on the trip actually exceeded my expectations.”Flemming Bo Jensen, Professional photographer 2011

“My tour with Nathan changed not only the way I take photo-graphs, but also the way I will travel from now on. As well as the technical training on how to get the most out of my camera and how to improve my shots with post-production software (which have improved my photography out of sight). Nathan coached me on how to interact with the people we met along the way. Its this that made it possible for me for the first time to photograph people in a relaxed and natural setting. I went to places I’d never normally go and spoke to people I would never normally have met. I would recommend Nathans tours and tuition to anyone who enjoys taking photos and is looking for adventure.”Rohan Singh (Hong Kong; Lawyer) 2007

What to bringYour best camera, be it a DSLR or an advanced compact with some manual controls. Your lens(es) should cover at least a medium zoom range. If you have them, a wide-angle lens (useful in temples and pagodas) and a longer telephoto lens (good on boat trips) would be useful but not essential. A fast standard lens with aperture of f1.8 or f1.4 is another good option. { A polarising filter{ A tripod{ Plenty of memory cards and a spare battery{ A laptop, although not essential, is very useful for

backing up the day’s shoot and reviewing what you have taken. We also recommend a portable external hard drive - just in case!

{ A rain cover for your camera and another one for yourself are recommended and are essential in the rainy season
