Kim Millhorn 2015-2016 RNPW President Balancing Relationships I invite you to attend the February 15th Rockford Network meeting where speaker, Vicki Hominick will be discussing the Renaissance of Balancing Relationships. To me effective communications is the glue to improve and deepen relationships. Communicating effectively enhances teamwork, decision making and problem solving. A good communicator will develop strong working relationships over time with consistent and dependable behavior. In my career I have observed a broad spectrum of behavior by employees, co- workers, colleagues, superiors and customers. e way people conduct themselves, good or bad, determines how people respond and perform. I’ve seen sales teams pull together under the right motivation built on consistency and honesty and conversely I’ve seen a team completely fracture and become ineffective because of inconsistency and lack of leadership. People don’t like to be let down. A promised day off, a bonus or offering help that is not delivered is a broken promise. If you don’t do what you say you’re going to do your behavior becomes the expected norm and you have lost credibility. To establish credibility your behavior has to be consistent and dependable. Keeping appointments is important. People that back out at the last minute or simply don’t show up have broken a promise. If you have broken a promise there had better be a good reason and you’d better follow through with a swift apology, admit the failure and find another way to resolve the matter. Taking responsibility for failure shows maturity and you will ultimately gain back a level of respect. I believe that returning phone calls is also important because it shows a level of courtesy and interest in the other person. After all, until you return the call you really don’t know what that phone conversation might lead to or what kind of a connection you might make with someone. I am frustrated when business people do not return calls even if it is to say ‘no thank you’. Some businesses even operate with a ‘gate keeper’, someone that is trained to field calls and doesn’t allow anyone to actually speak to a decision maker. Again, a possible connection is lost and I believe it’s a lost opportunity. When meeting with someone listening is another way of showing courtesy and interest. When I began selling advertising I thought it was all about ‘telling’ and it was necessary to cram as much information into a meeting with someone to show my vast knowledge and expertise. I soon realized that effectively communicating is less about talking and more about listening. And when you are engaged in listening you’ll notice a lot of unspoken information being transmitted with body language, gestures and eye movement. If you are really listening you have to make eye contact and remain focused on what is being said and you can’t be working on how you’re going to respond. While in a meeting, I’ve caught myself trying to think ahead and then realize I just missed something that was probably very important. Without engaged listening you’re almost certain to miss the true message. So, I hope that you’ll come to the next Rockford Network meeting on February 15th to listen and learn about balancing relationships. February 2016 | rockfordnetwork.org

Balancing RelationshipsI invite you to attend the February 15th

Rockford Network meeting where speaker, Vicki Hominick will be discussing the Renaissance of Balancing Relationships.

To me effective communications is the glue to improve and deepen relationships. Communicating effectively enhances teamwork, decision making and problem solving. A good communicator will develop strong working relationships over time with consistent and dependable behavior.

In my career I have observed a broad spectrum of behavior by employees, co-workers, colleagues, superiors and customers. The way people conduct themselves, good or bad, determines how people respond and perform.

Honoring Our LeadersThe YWCA will be hosting its Leader Luncheon XXXV

and honoring Women of Achievement on Monday, March 7, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm at Giovanni’s. Please join The Rockford Network of Professional Women at our tables as we honor our nominee. Since 1981, 58 RNPW members have been honored by the YWCA!

This year, Lindsey Gregg, Owner of Peak Medical Home Care has been nominated for the Business Award. This award honors women in the business and non-profit sectors who make a significant contribution in their field. We’ve been watching as Lindsey has taken Peak to one of the premier home care organizations in our area, opening four locations in the past two years!

This year, the YWCA Leader Luncheon program will feature the inspiring story of Lilly Ledbetter - the woman at the center of the historic discrimination case that inspired the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act--her fight for equal rights in the workplace, and how her determination became a

victory for the nation. After years of legal battles, Lilly became the namesake of Barack Obama’s first official piece of legislation as president – the Act for Fair Pay. Today, she is a tireless advocate for change, traveling the country to urge women and minorities to claim their civil rights. If you would like to join us at the RNPW table, you can register online at ywca.org/rockford/leader-

luncheon (tell them you want to sit at the RNPW table) or contact Jocelyn Hare at [email protected] to reserve your spot. Cost is $50 for YWCA Members and $55 for NonMembers.

Save the Date!Lean In - Women, Work And The Will To Lead by Sheryl Sandberg

We will be discussing the book “Lean In” by Sheryl Sandberg at our March program, facilitated by Zoe Norwood, Adult Services Librarian at the Rockford Public Library. Following is an excerpt from the book to give you a little taste of our discussion:

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to go through life without being labeled by my gender. I don’t wake up thinking “What am I going to do today as Facebook’s female COO?, but that’s often how I’m referred to by others. When

people talk about a female pilot, a female engineer, or a female race car driver, the word “female” implies a bit of surprise. Men in the professional world are rarely seen through this same gender lens. A Google search for “Facebook’s male CEO” returns this message: “No results found.”

As Gloria Steinem observed, “Whoever has power takes over the noun--and the norm--while the less powerful get an adjective.” Since no one wants to be perceived as less powerful, a lot of women reject the gender identification and insist, “I don’t see myself as a woman; I see myself as a novelist/athlete/professional/fill-in-the-blank.” They are right to do so. No one wants her achievements modified. We all just want to be the noun. Yet the world has a way of reminding women that they are women, and girls that they are girls.

In between my junior and senior years of high school, I worked as a page in Washington, DC for my hometown congressman, William Lehman. The Speaker of the House at the time was the legendary Massachusetts representative Tip O’Neill, and Congressman Lehman promised to introduce me to him before the summer ended. But as the days ticked by, it didn’t happen. And it didn’t happen. Then, on the very last day of the session, he made good on his promise. In the hall outside the House floor, he pulled me over to meet Speaker O’Neill. I was nervous, but congressman Lehman put me at ease by introducing me in the nicest way possible, telling the Speaker that I had worked hard all summer. The Speaker looked at me, then reached over and patted my head. He turned to the congressman and remarked “She’s pretty.” Then he turned his attention back to me and asked just one question: “Are you a pom-pom girl?”

I was crushed. Looking back, I know his words were intended to flatter me, but in the moment, I felt belittled. I wanted to be recognized for the work I had done. I reacted defensively. “No,” I replied. “I study too much for that.” Then a wave of terror struck me for speaking up to the man who was third in line for the presidency.

But no one seemed to register my curt and not-at-all clever response. The Speaker just patted me on the head--again!--and moved along. My congressman beamed.

Even to my teenage self, this sexism seemed retro. The Speaker was born in 1912, eight years before women were give the right to vote, but by the time I met him in the halls of Congress, society had (mostly) evolved. It was obvious that a woman could do anything a man could do. My childhood was filled with firsts – Golda Meir in Israel, Geraldine Ferraro on the Mondale ticket, Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court, Sally Ride in space.

Given all these strides, I headed into college believing that the feminists of the sixties and seventies had done the hard work of achieving equality for my generation.
