Entering the Dirty Art Club is like letting an encyclopedic sample curator

soundtrack a vibrant psychedelic cartoon dream. Conceived in North

Carolina, fragments of sun-kissed soul and dusty psyche-rock sounds

are stitched together and intertwined with live instrumentation recorded

in a home studio setup to convey a woozy and soulful experience. It’s

a blend that’s been refined on Dirty Art Club’s latest album, Basement

Seance, which is themed around sampling rare “old songs and records

that barely anybody’s heard” and reanimating them into a new life.

Embracing a recording environment that usually involves sitting on the

floor in a dark room, the Dirty Art Club production style is anchored

around the technique of creating a sonic texture based on multiple

sources: The fruits of vinyl digging trips are combined with layers of live

instrumentation and embellished with field recordings and atmospheric

effects. These component parts are skillfully mixed so that they “sound

like one sample.” It’s a trick that creates a unity of sound where songs

segue together while moving the emotional narrative along.

This emotional resonance is what elevates Dirty Art Club’s music from

being a simple hip-hop beat tape. It’s a feat made more remarkable by

the fact that during the two year recording process of Basement Seance,

its chief protagonist was overcoming a battle with the medical condition

anhedonia as a symptom of a larger unspecified health issue. It left him

temporarily “losing the innate feelings that govern how I identify with

and perceive music.” This was after a lifetime of feeling “music-inspired

emotion” more than any other source.

Monophonics are back with a six-song EP that fuses the complimentary

and explosive soul, rock and funk influences, proving themselves to

be the rightful inheritors of the Bay Area’s impressive psychedelic soul

sound. Mirrors is comprised entirely of cover tunes, except that I doubt

you’ve ever heard of half the deeply funky and soulful originals that

inspired these soulful, tastefully produced, and timeless Monophonics

treatments. “We wanted to do a couple songs that were more familiar to

people and then shine some light on groups we’re big into,” lead singer,

keyboardist and co-producer Kelly Finnigan explains. It takes a lot of guts

to cover your favorite songs, your van jams, that song you play as a shot

of inspiration to break-up a marathon studio session. “Not only are these

great songs, but these are artists that we listen to and are influenced by.”

“It’s not about making records that sound old, it’s about making records

that sound cool,” Kelly says. Not that he and the other five members of

Monophonics mind if you confuse their albums for classic-era recordings.

Even musician friends regular mistake a sweaty and greasy Monophonics

original for an unheard Bar-Kays’ side, or a deep soul cover tune might

pass for an original to a novice ear, except that Kelly makes sure to give

credit where credit is due, which is what they do explicitly on this EP,

Mirrors.

Frank is the latest release from Dolfin Records, a Texas indie label

with a prominent underground roster that includes rapper Lord Byron,

producer Ben Hixon, R&B singer Jon Bap, and former Stanley Clarke

drummer Mike Mitchell. Liv.E is one of the newer artists on the label,

having previously collaborated with Hixon through a series of DJ parties

in Dallas (“New Math Mondays”). Hixon and Bap have significant marks

on this project, providing production, mixing, and background vocals. The

beats they lend are often heavy on the drums, with short, hazy riffs that

resemble Dilla-style syncopated loops.

Frank opens with a short hiss, launching into a jittery pattern of cymbals

and drums, stinging bass slaps, and bouncy guitar riffs. You can almost

see the tape reels rolling in front of you as the instrumental loops play

themselves out with occasional flutters and skips. A chorus of voices

enter with harmonies out of the George Clinton songbook, blending in

behind the slow, finger-snapping beat. It sounds more like a lost, dusty

funk recording from the ’70s than an R&B song made in 2017.

Running in parallel with the powerful wave of transformation that occurred with the advent of recording technology in the 1800s, children’s music has been a critically important part of the evolving pace of modern culture. Through the entire body of children’s music, few have truly deviated from the normal harmonic and melodic structures of past composers. This is about to change in the fall of 2017 as West Coast Get Down co-founder Ryan Porter will present Spangle-Lang Lane, a collection of music that revamps and puts a facelift on some of the world’s most beloved children’s songs.

The ethos of Spangle-Lang Lane equally lives in the visual realm, coupled with puppets and a film series that takes on the life of the West Coast Get Down and various jazz luminaries. From episode to episode, you can expect to see main characters Ryan Porter and Crazy Jake, along with puppet versions of Duke Ellington, Kamasi Washington, Louis Armstrong, Brandon Coleman, Tony Williams, Terrace Martin, Miles Davis, Thundercat, John Coltrane, and many others. As the influence of Sesame Street started to filter into Ryan Porter’s dreams, he quickly sought out the right tools and knowledge for creating his own puppets. Ryan adds more detail on how the puppet world of the album formed. “The vision for having puppets as part of Spangle-Lang Lane came from the influence of the magical world of Jim Henson, but I also had a dream where I could see all of these puppets so vividly playing gigs and recording. I had these dreams so much that I looked into puppet making classes so that I could learn how to make these characters that I saw so vividly in my dreams. After a few years of learning how to make puppets, which is not an easy thing to do, I finally made prototypes of the puppets that I had seen in my dreams. These puppets are the ones that I use to film in my videos to help teach kids music lessons and history about older musicians that aren’t with us any longer. The type of musicians that made a huge impact on how music sounds today, revamped through the power of puppetry.”

Italian super cult combo Calibro 35 release their 6th much awaited studio album “DECADE”. “DECADE” marks 10 years of Calibro 35’s releases and it’s the very first album recorded by Calibro with an orchestral-inspired enlarged line-up that features horns, strings and percussions.

Mixed and recorded by Calibro’s usual suspect and Grammy Award winner Tommaso Colliva, on the album all the influences collected by the band during their last ten years’ journey like music, collaborations, movies, gigs, books find their space. “DECADE” is Calibro 35’s “time capsule” and is as rare and complex as a timeless work.

Musically Calibro 35’s inner influences like Ennio Morricone, listen for instance to the epic journey of the album’s end credits “Travelers”, Luis Bacalov and David Axelrod are still there but are now mixed with elements from afrobeat or cosmic jazz. “Psycheground” sounds like Tony Allen involved in writing a score for a vintage Hollywood production while Sun Ra lurks on “Modo”. Everything is mixed up with new influences from modern musical languages. References to Jaga Jazzist, Budos Band or Alternative Jazz and Alternative Hip Hop new acts such as Makaya McCraven, Yussef Kamaal, Oddisee can all be found on the album. In tracks such as “Modulor “you realize that Decade is certainly not a point of arrival and expresses the ambition of the band to look further and evolve. All classic Calibro’s vintage instruments such as clavinet, eco, analog synths, fuzz guitars are now supported by new ones such as Dan Bau, Balafon and Waterphone (“Polymeri”) in the band’s new wall of sound. Thanks to the enlarged line-up and the orchestrated parts involved, which pushed the band to experiment new methods of composition, Calibro 35 on “DECADE” sound strong, full and tight as never before.

Magic in Threes second release on KingUnderground with a double

sided funk 45 inspired by 70s soundtracks.

In 2016, Magic In Threes were writing and recording a new track every

week. They spent so much time in the studio that year that the song

ideas just kept coming, one after another. They have always been rooted

in library music and over the years they’ve dug deeper and deeper into

that sphere of inspiration.

“Finnish Funk” and “Shot Thru The Grease” are both loving homages to

that genre. Heavy beats with diabolical melodies are the name of the

game for The A-side, “Finnish Funk”. On the flip side “Shot Thru The

Grease” has more of a loping feel to it with ample portions of moody

thematic elements. Like a score to a lost 1970s Italian action film, these

tracks hit like a hard nosed detective closing in on his next collar.

We try to keep the analogue sound alive at KU so except some surgery

in the digital domain, the material was mastered by C. Obermayer with

analogue gear based on the same circuitry that was available to the

engineers in the middle part of the previous century.

Esbe is an multi-genre music producer from Los Angeles, California. He

is known for his atmospheric instrumental production which incorporates

sound elements from extensive use of jazz and soul samples. His latest

release, Bloomsday, is a collection of 19 essential instrumentals.

“If you were to grab tracks at random from Bloomsday, you might not

have guessed that those songs came from the same album. However,

when you listen to the album in the way that it was arranged, it will all

start to make sense, and you can start to hear how Esbe connects the

dots from one song to the next. Esbe draws from a lot of different styles

and influences, whether it be soul, hard bop, cool jazz, bossa nova,

boom bap, down tempo, jungle, house, or drum and bass, just to name

a few. This might sound like he’s unfocused or trying to do too much with

his music, but Esbe has a good sense for not overcrowding his individual

tracks. Each song might bring in a couple of different elements, but he

keeps his arrangements clean, with just the right amount of interesting

samples to build from, and the patience to let them unfold at a steady

pace, without forcing anything. There are plenty of obscure samples that

you won’t place, but he also manages to pick a few key spots to drop

some well-known samples, but then re-purposes them in interesting

ways in which to give them new life.

Emapea, the renowned beat-maker from Poland, burst upon the scene

MAST’s Thelonious Sphere Monk is a cosmic journey reinterpreting the great Thelonious Monk Song Book in celebration of his 100th birthday. MAST tackles sixteen Monk compositions, including the acclaimed “Round Midnight,” “Blue Monk,” “Straight No Chaser,” “Epistrophy” and “Well You Needn’t.” As well as more obscure titles like “Misterioso,” “Pannonica,” “Friday The 13th” and “Bemsha Swing.” MAST, aka Tim Conley, pays homage to the significant history of Thelonious Monk and his esteemed compositions while bringing them into the future using modern electronic bleeps, bloops, and beats. This is done in concert with Low End Theory, Los Angeles beat culture Conley is a part of. Harmonious with the mystical and metaphysical hand painted cover art by Japanese artist Tokio Aoyama, each track created is a unique world unto itself and the listener travels from one musical planet to the next on the spaceship Monk.

The sixteen track LP features a diverse cast of extraordinary musicians contributing instrumental virtuosity, which these Thelonious Monk compositions demand. NYC tenor saxophonist Chris Speed (Tim Berne, Jim Black) is haunting on “Well You Needn’t.” Chicago drummer Makaya McCraven bashes and percolates on “Nutty” and “Let’s Cool One.” As the album’s lone piano protagonist, virtuoso Brian Marsella (John Zorn, Cyro Baptista) rises to the challenge and shines on “Ask Me Now,” “‘Round Midnight” and “Straight No Chaser.” Philly born upright bassist Jason Fraticelli (Taylor McFerrin, Mark Guiliana) is expansive with endless improvisational ideas on “Blue Monk.” And don’t forget the horns! Trombonist Jonah Levine, trumpeter Dan Rosenboom (Burning Ghosts) and baritone/alto saxophonist Gavin Templeton (Nels Cline) put power into Thelonious Monk’s prodigious melodies and flourish blistering solos on “Evidence”, “Bemsha Swing,” “Epistrophy,” “Nutty,” and “Let’s Cool One.” MAST is an LA transplant via Philadelphia and a guitarist by trade. collaborator & band member, Kuzich to start this series off.

& multi-instrumentalism in every track. The Perth (AUS) born musician

is no stranger to the music industry - having toured extensively as a

release his soundtrack to Sukeban Games’ cyberpunk bartender game

VA-11 HALL-A on limited edition double vinyl. The soundtrack comes on

180g pink/blue vinyl in a beautiful packaging with original artwork by

Christopher Ortiz (@kiririn51), Koyorin (@koyoriin), Grey Monarch (@

losebetter), Tofu+Beast (@KawaiiMess) and Daniel Leander Goffin (@

danielgoffin).

This limited Collector’s Edition includes an exclusive a one-sided A2

poster, a 12“ booklet with an fictional *Kira* Miki interview as well as

three download codes for Prologue, Second Round and the soon to be

released Bonus Track Collection (featuring *Kira* Miki vocal tracks sung

by Adriana Figueroa). The tracklist was curated by composer Michael

Kelly & all songs were remastered for vinyl.

VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action is a booze em’ up about

waifus, technology, and post-dystopia life. Its main mechanic consists

in preparing drinks using the available ingredients, but rather than just

following an order to advance through the story, it’s up to the player to

decide what kind of drink to serve. In short, this is about serving the

right drink, and you achieve this by paying attention to your client’s rants.

Rewards include different events, dialogues and endings.
