Editor’s Letter … Those of you with children in year 6 will be experiencing a jam packed agenda as they prepare to move up to their new school in September.

Branton St Wilfrids celebrated with a leaver’s party at Kilham Hall which was thoroughly enjoyed by both the children, parents and teachers! It’s an emotional time for parents knowing that this will be one of the last times this bunch of friends will be together. I wish all of our year 6 children at St Wilfrid’s, Auckley, Hayfield Lane and Finningley C of E School the very best as they take their next big step in life.

I was lucky enough to watch some amazing cricket played by St Wilfrid’s Y6 team at Warmsworth as they represented their school pyramid. The team won all 5 games and will now represent the county at Harrogate County Cricket Ground in July. The children displayed fantastic skills and were commended for their excellent sportsmanship by the runners up. I was so impressed with their support for each other and team work, a real credit to school and each other.

I would also like to wish everyone leaving school to join further education, training or employment the best of luck.

The deadline for the August issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 10th July and The Arrow will be distributed from Friday 19th July 2013!

Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom

AUCKLEY SCHOOL

GOOD NEWS – WE’RE EXTENDING!!

We are very fortunate to have just received additional funding from the Academies Capital Maintenance Fund to extend our school premises.

The grant, which is a considerable amount of money, will be used to build a new classroom, meeting room, Special Needs room, toilet and cloakroom facilities within the school building. There is no doubt that this will enhance the educational facilities at our school and make a huge difference to the education of the pupils. Work is due to commence in July and there will be some disruption to school life and we ask that local residents bear with us whilst the work is being carried out as there may at times be disruption. Safety of all children will be paramount, any instruction issued regarding coming in and out of the premises must be strictly adhered to whilst plant and machinery are being used.

We have held a planning meeting for parents and local residents to view plans and to be made aware of what will be happening. In addition, we plan to include a section on the school website to keep you updated with events. We are going to record each stage with photographs.

We have been incredibly fortunate in being successful in our application and I’m sure you will agree that this extension to the school will be welcomed by pupils, parents and staff.

Sunday July 28 k.o. 10.30 at Riverside Park, Auckley. Auckley FC will be playing a team of Auckley FC veterans followed by a Barbecue & kids Bouncy Castle in the afternoon weather permitting at the Eagle. There will be a raffle & all proceeds will go to 'Friends of Auckley School'

I am running the 2014 Virgin London Marathon to raise funds for PDSA,

please visit my website:

http://www.virginmoneygiving.com/colinwallacehttp://www.virginmoneygiving.com/colinwallace

After completing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge last year with a team of vets and nurses to raise funds for the PDSA veterinary charity, I decided to look for a new challenge! I am running the 2014 Virgin London Marathon under a gold bond place which means I have the added pressure of raising £2000, almost as scary as the training.

I am not a runner in any way, the last time I ran was 20 years ago in the Glasgow half marathon when I had to walk the last half after “hitting the brick wall”. I used to play a lot of football but was a goalkeeper so my longest run was approx 6 yards to take a goal kick. So this really is a huge challenge for me!

Twitter updates about my running can be found on @PDSAmarathonman, I can be seen jogging around the village of Auckley on 3 days/nights a week as I try to build myself up. I will normally have my PDSA running vest or PDSA T shirt on. I would really appreciate any donations so please visit my website above and help to support this special charity. Colin Wallace, Pet Aid Hospital Manager.

Kilham Hall News We thought it might be useful for readers to know who is on the committee of Kilham Village Hall: Noreen Pearson: Chair Sheila Smith: Vice chair Veronica Lathwood: Secretary Barbara Fussey: Treasurer Bev Humphreys: Booking clerk Jean Cheetham Emma Gebbie Janet Goodband Michelle Sidebottom

All members are local to Branton and Barbara and Michelle also serve on the Branton with Cantley Parish Council and are the PC representatives on our committee. Barbara is especially well known to Branton residents through Branton Post Office where Bev also works so, if you have any questions about Kilham Hall and its activities, you can always pop into the Post Office and have a word with Barbara or Bev.

Our committee member list is fluid and we are hoping to welcome a new member soon.

It's great to be able to report that weekend party bookings are on the increase and forthcoming weekends are already fully booked so be sure to plan ahead for your special events and speak to Bev as soon as you have your date.

Our Tuesday morning Coffee Club will soon be closing for its summer recess and the final Coffee Morning will be on Tuesday 16th July . This one will be a little more special, especially in the refreshment department, as a huge THANK YOU to our regular friends who come along most Tuesdays and make Tuesday mornings, at the Hall, fun and vibrant.

However, do not despair!! Coffee Club will reopen its doors on Tuesday 3rd September and we hope that everyone will continue to support us and maybe bring along new friends to join us.

Lots to look forward to in the autumn, including our children's Hallowe'en Party on Sunday 27th October. Details to follow but put the date in your diaries.

Meantime, summer must surely be on its way soon and school will soon break up, so happy holidays from Kilham Hall committee.

Branton Fun Day!!! Wow what a day it turned out to be. The weather wasn't looking to good at first but it held off for us and everyone seemed to have a good day. There was a nice selection of stall holders from around Doncaster, like Green Fayre Gifts, The Hand Made Deli, Cheek 2 Chique, Rapunzels Tower, Funky Faces, Slimming World, Sweet Trees, Branton Art Club, Maureen Fitzsimons and her knitted Toys.

Providing the food was Neil of Woodys from Auckley, Carla from Buckleys Hot Dog Van and Darren with his lovely hot sugary doughnuts. Of course not forgetting my guys on the bar Dave and Mike for keeping everyone in wine and beer, you did a grand job guys. For entertainment we had Allegro Theatre Dance Academy, RLC Rockets Cheerleading Sqaud, Brantons every own Spotlight Street Dancers and Sam from ZFitness teaching us all a little zumba. As well as Martyn from Pure Heaven Entertainments for all his mess and mayem. Not forgetting Brian at Rascal Castles for providing his bouncy castle and rodeo bull which the adults couldn't get enough off. The best time was 58 seconds which means Daniel Briggs was the winner of the Family Pass to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, well done!! Just to remind everyone, today was to help raise money for the Harry Matthews Bowel Transplant Trust and we managed a wonderful amount of £608.59, but this is only the start of it as Emma Jane Entertainments has lots more events happening this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who volunteered there time today to help on a stall, and everyone who came down to support us, with out you we couldn't have managed today. THANKYOU

News From Auckley School News

Fun and Bun Day for Mae We had a fantastic day at Auckley School on Friday 24th May during our 'Fun and Bun Day for Mae' despite the weather! A total of £760 was raised on the day through sales of buns, cards and of course the Bouncy Castle sponsored bounce.

We held the day as a result of a plea from a parent whose daughter attends Auckley school. It was the children's idea to hold a sponsored bounce as well as a Bun Day. One of our Year 5 pupils made various cards and sold them in aid of Mae. A teacher cleared her childhood belongings and sold these on the day too. Over 800 buns were donated by the kind parents. It certainly was a worthwhile day and the children got to meet Mae in the afternoon. She was treated like a celebrity and they asked numerous questions. Molly and Georgia, Year 6 pupils who escorted Mae, said: ''Mae is an inspirational child who shows you the enormous potential she has despite her difficulties. A wonderful, funny person who we really enjoyed helping.''

Mae's mum was overwhelmed by the reception Mae received and she couldn't believe how generous the parents, staff and children were. She said, ''I am truly overwhelmed with the amazing response from all at Auckley. I want to thank each and every person who has been so kind and generous which has resulted in this incredible day!''

STEM Day On Monday 10th June years 2 – 6 took part in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) day. They had a visit from the bloodhound racing team and took part in activities ranging from making balloon powered cars to making K’Nex rocket cars. They children had a fantastic time and all enjoyed making the different cars.

Last week year 6 had their residential trip at Hatfield Water Park. During their visit, they went wild in the water, climbed beyond their fears and hit many personal targets. Fantastic fun was had by all in-cluding the staff. This was a wonderful trip which created many memories to cherish. As Charlotte and George exclaimed, ‘Unlike anything we’ve ever done before…wish we could go back next year.

Branton Juniors held their annual presentation at the Keepmoat Stadium on Sunday 2 June. 180 players and 400 guests gathered to celebrate another exciting season for the club. The event was held in two parts, with the younger teams in the afternoon, and the older teams in the evening. Notable successes included the Under 13’s winning the Doncaster Junior Sunday League Division 2 title, and then narrowly failing to make it a League and Cup Double by losing in the U13’s Cup Final. For the third consecutive year, a team from the club played matches in Holland, when the U14’s visited the Dutch town of Volendam, playing two matches against strong Dutch teams. The visit was topped off with a visit to the Amsterdam Arena home of Ajax.

This year also saw a change in club secretary, with well known Auckley resident Tony Woolley handing over the reigns after 23 years involvement in the club. Tony has

made a fantastic contribution to the development of the club , and its achievement of chartered standard status. The club showed its appreciation by making a special presentation to Tony, of a silver salver and by making him Life President of the club. The pictures show Tony receiving his award from club treasurer Richard Oakes, and the successful under 13 ‘s with their League Trophy.

Starling class visited the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. They went on a fact-finding mission to find out about all the different animals. As well as learning about the animals and their habitats, the Starling Class had lots of fun too. As always, the coach trip and the picnic lunch was a favourite part of the day. They even had time to play on the Adventure Play Park too.

Harrogate Spring Flower Show Our Kestrel class had planned, designed and planted up a Salad Bowl with compost, seeds and trellis as part of a competition by ‘Love My Salad’ to be exhibited at the Harrogate Spring Flower Show. We travelled to the show to see how well our salad bowl had done against other schools that had entered. Two children from Kestrels wanted to share what they thought of their day. ‘All of our class enjoyed the activities and learning about all different things to do with bees, gardening and recycling. We learnt that recycling old fruit and vegetables make great compost when mixed with soil. When we saw our Salad Bowl and that, we had won a Premier Gold Award we were jumping with joy and excitement, buzzing like bum-ble bees! After that, we went to Harlow Car Gardens. We went in the log maze and played tag. We also went in the tree house until it was time to get back on the coach and return to school. The class had a fantastic day out’.

On the beautiful sunny morning of 3rd June 32, excited children and five adults waved goodbye to parents as we left school for our residential in London. We have led this successful trip for a number of years now and the children always look forward to their week away. Whilst there we visited the Houses of Parliament and Downing Street, St Paul’s Cathedral and The Globe theatre. We went to the theatre to watch ‘Wicked’, took a flight on the London Eye and watched the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. We couldn’t believe how lucky we were with glorious weather where we picnicked in a park every day. We had many compliments on the children’s behaviour and how smart they looked in their uniforms, the staff were very proud of them. A tired but happy group of children returned to school after another successful visit to London.

Owl class visit to York

To help them with their work on famous people our Owl class visited the National Railway Museum to find out about Sir Nigel Gresley. They found out that he invented the steam train and was a very famous engineer. The children had a fun day looking at all the different trains, took part in a bridge building workshop and even had a ride on a train. They found out some valuable and interesting infor-mation that helped them back at school with their class work.

2nd / 3rd September (training days) MONDAY – SHOW AND TELL. We would like children to fetch things in from home that they think other children would be interested in hearing about, ie anything they have collected on holiday, unusual toys they may have, or their favourite book etc. We will then be asking them to give a little talk about their object and tell the other children why it is so important to them.

TUESDAY – WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WHEN YOU GROW UP? This morning we will be thinking about what we want to do when we get older. Please come dressed as your chosen career character so we can have fun guessing what you want to do, ie would you like to be a policeman/woman, a pilot, a soldier, a nurse etc. We will be discussing your chosen careers and what you would need to do to follow your chosen path.

This will be our

29th Year on the present site, I hope you can join in and help us celebrate.

First a few words about last year and a big thank you on

behalf of all the committee for everyone’s support. We again declared the Show a success with the biggest turnout ever. As well as our reputation for providing a great day out for all ages, the weather was more than kind to us. We took full advantage of the brief ‘window of opportunity’ the sun shone in what was one of the most dreadfully wet years on record. All the events were well attended and the evening saw 300 tickets sold.

Exhibits for the Horticultural and Produce Show will be accepted between 8.30am and 10.45am. It was noted and encouraging that there were new exhibitors taking part last year. If you have not had a go yet now is the time to. This year there will be 114 classes to enter. See our website for the schedule www.auckleyshow.co.uk and now published in the Arrow Magazine

Web Site www.auckleyshow.co.uk There are still some out there who are not aware of our web site. We update the site regularly so visit us when you are surfing the net and tell your friends, family and neighbours to do the same. We have built up a great collection of photographs, take a look.

Auckley Show 200+Club This is still going strong and there are numbers available for the monthly draw. Prizes currently stand at £100 for first £20 for second and £10 for third. class 102. 3. If, in the opinion of the judges, none of the exhibits in a particular class merit a prize, the committee reserves the

right to withhold any prize in that class. 4. The decision of the judges is final and binding. Any protest regarding interpretation of these rules, or any other mat-

ter, must be made to the show secretary on the day of the show. 5. No exhibits to be removed before 3.45pm. Exhibits not claimed by 4.00pm will be presumed donat-

ed and will be sold. An auction will take place at 4.00pm. The proceeds will be used to cover the cost of the show.

6. The committee will not be liable for damage or loss to persons or property. 7. Exhibits must not have been shown in the previous year. 8. In other respects, the show will be conducted in accordance with the rules and standards of the Royal Horticulture

Society, as laid down in their handbook.

PRIZES IN ALL CLASSES Adult: 1st Rosette 2nd Rosette 3rd Rosette Children: 1st £2.50 & Rosette 2nd £1.50 & Rosette 3rd £1.00 & Rosette

A Few Tips for Exhibitors 1. Please make sure you read the schedule and count your exhibits, an extra potato or carrot will not be judged and

marked N.T.S. (not to schedule) 2. Vegetables should generally be as large as possible, exceptions being potatoes and beetroot where judges like to see

good clean medium sized exhibits, look for the requisite number of even sized exhibits – 4 good medium carrots will usually beat 3 big ones plus a little one.

3. Judges tend to favour cucumber or courgettes with the flower or its remains intact. 4. For the adult class, paintings etc should be nicely framed and clean. Not so important in the children’s class. 5. Cookery classes should be well cooked but not overdone, again make sure you enter the correct quantity. Check that

the pastry of custards and flans is fully cooked. 6. Jam, pickles etc should be in clean clear glass containers. 7. Arts and crafts exhibits should be clean and free of creases. 8. To enable judging to be done fairly, please do not put your name on the front of the exhibits. 9. Flowers should be as fresh as possible; dropped petals may loose you points. 10. Wines – although any bottle will be accepted, to really impress the judge use 26 fluid oz clear punted bottles fitted with

a flanged cork stopper. Screw tops will be accepted. 11 Beer Lager, any bottle will be accepted but to impress the judge, the use of 1 pint plain brown bottles, sealed with a

crown top is ideal. 12. Please do not be afraid to have a go, challenge your neighbour to have a go, a little friendly competition can be good fun.

If you are beaten, resolve to win next year.

Please Note every effort will be made to look after your exhibits, but accidents do happen. So please do not enter any item of extreme monetary or sentimental value that could possibly be damaged

Branton St Wilfrid’s School News

On Wednesday 17th April, Class 5 went to Gainsborough Old Hall, as part of their History topic on the Tudors. Having learnt about how rich and poor Tudor men and women lived at school, we spent an interesting and entertaining morning looking at how Tudor servants would prepare for a feast, before we re-enacted a feast that took place when Henry VIII visited Gainsborough Hall in 1541. We dressed as nobles, servants, dancers, jesters and even jugglers. We also looked at a variety of Tudor artefacts and played Tudor games. All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day!

Jubilate News Jubilate held a concert to raise money for the Harry Matthews Bowel Transplant Trust. We were joined by lots of different musicians, singers and dancers who helped to raise just over £800 for the trust in memory of Harry. We would like to thank everyone who gave their time, effort and in some cases their reputations to make this concert the success that it was. Our next event is on 21st June at Cantley Methodist Church and in December we will be taking part in the annual carol concert at Doncaster Minster.

Class 3 Visit to the National Mining Museum Class 3 had a fantastic visit to the National Coalmining Museum near Wakefield earlier this term. They descended 140m down the mine, wearing helmets and lamps, to discover what it was like for miners through different periods of history. They learned what it would have been like for children working in Victorian times. And their favourite part? Getting their faces dirty with coal dust!

On Tuesday 21st May Reception Class visited the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. We went into the classroom and saw lots of different animal skeletons and feathers. Children also had the chance to hold an ostrich egg and a live bearded dragon! We loved the giraffes because they bent down and out their heads next to us! We had a very busy day and returned to school happy but very tired!

Class 4 Visit to Conisborough Castle At the end of May Class 4 enjoyed a class trip to Conisbrough Castle, a real motte-and-bailey castle. We began our day with a tour in and around the castle, including the stone. We were able to think about and act out life in a medieval castle, exploring the remains of the different rooms. As well as this we were able to create some beautiful sketches of the castle and even perform our medieval dances in the great hall. Luckily the rain stayed away and we all had a fantastic time!

Class 2 visit to Cannon Hall The children in Class 2 had a fabulous day at Cannon Hall, learning about what life was like for Victorian servants. We all dressed up for the day and did lots of jobs around the house - including cooking, washing, cleaning and polishing. We even made our own butter! We also enjoyed a tour of the hall and we were definitely ready for our lunch that we all helped to make. The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

Year 6 Rounder's Tournament 22nd May

The pyramid Y5/6 Rounder’s tournament was held at The Hayfield School a few weeks ago. We sent a hopeful team of girls and boys and were very impressed with their skills. They won every match they played and were a credit to the School. They won the Pyramid Tournament and secured us a place in the Doncaster Tournament … watch this space!

On Monday 10th May, Class 6 set off for an adventure-packed week at Marrick Priory, in North Yorkshire. The week started with orienteering and initiative exercises, where the children had to work in teams to solve different problems, such as trying to move themselves around a bench without touching the floor, using crates and planks to make a path! Whilst not all of the tasks were completed successfully, they were great fun! Then, for the next two days, the children completed a variety of outdoor adventure activities. One of the most popular was abseiling down the bell tower at the Priory, and climbing on the High and Ropes Courses and the rock-climbing walls. Then there was canoeing, and despite the cold, rainy weather, the children took part enthusiastically. There weren’t many of them that came out of the lake without being drenched, after playing battleships and a lovely game where they could throw wet sponges at each other! The children also took part in a day-walk on Thursday, and walked up to Grinton Smelt Mills, where they looked for galina and enjoyed a day in the Yorkshire Dales. We finished the week with a campfire, where the children sang songs and performed songs that they had written about their week at Marrick. The children came back tired out, but full of memories of a week that they said they would never forget!

PTA Croc-a-mile Event On 7th June all the children took part in the Croc-a-mile sponsor event to raise money for the PTA. Children came to school dressed for the event and completed a total of 4 laps of the school field to make a mile in total. With encouragement from parents and friends and a crocodile to run along with, all the children had a great go at the challenge and have raised over £991.00 to date.

SIAMS School Inspection On 24th May St Wilfrid’s was inspected under the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools Framework. The appointed inspector spent a very full day in the school talking to staff, governors, pupils and a group of parents. Judgements about the school’s provision in the following categories were made:

The school’s distinctive Christian character The impact of collective worship The effectiveness of religious education The effectiveness of leadership and management

We were delighted to receive an overall judgement of outstanding! Well done to everyone who helped to show what a special and unique place St Wilfrid’s is!
