“We believe education is about building the future. Learning is a lifelong process that has to be made enjoyable so that students will regard the assimilation of knowledge as a lifelong process. The international approach of the school, its use of modern technology in teaching and the cosmopolitan environment it offers make studying more relevant”, said the proud Chairman of Al Noor, Ali Hassan.

ounded in 1993, the school stands for-“Knowledge is Power: which underlines the fundamental truth that success in life depends on the never

ending process of learning. It was a humble beginning and with the dedication of Ali Hassan, the school’s Chairman, the school has transformed into a leader in the field of education in Bahrain.

The school offers a broad –based educational foundation which enables young people to confidently enter the competitive world, preparing them through different disciplines for the many options offered by a variety of institutions. It is the only school in the country that provides three types of curricula:

British Curriculum: IGCSE, AS &A Levels Bahraini Curriculum:

Tawjihiya Certificate Indian Curriculum:

CBSE upto Class XII

The British Curriculum follows the IGCSE course that is offered

by the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate. They also have the AS Level (Advanced Subsidiary Level), and A Level (Advanced Level) qualifications.

Along with this, Cambridge IT Diplomas are also available which also includes the Cambridge Primary Programme (CPP) and the Check Point (CP) exam.

The Bahraini Curriculum (Thawjihiya) is similar to what is offered by the Ministry of Education, Bahrain. This curriculum also includes subjects like English, Computer Science and French.

The CBSE curriculum follows the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi.

in a system best suited to their needs and abilities.

The international approach of the school, its modern era of technology, the balance between education and information, encouragement of creativity and innovation make studying fun, rewarding and fruitful.

“The globalisation of the market place presents competitive challenge. But it also presents an opportunity. On having completed their high school education, our students will be expected to compete in a global economy, in a much wider context, one in which their competitors will not be confined to students from Bahrain. They will have to compete for jobs, for positions and for careers in a very different environment than to

the one that they are accustomed to. This will require them to function effectively in a global workplace and a global society. I am confident that in Al Noor, students’ have the ability to face the future with confidence because they have been educated and trained with one key idea as their watchword - that is excellence” said Ali Hassan.

Role of Teachers at Al NoorAl Noor International School believes that education is about building a better future. One can never stop learning. It is a process that is made enjoyable so that students can regard the assimilation of knowledge as lifelong process. The importance of “Life Long Learning” is acknowledged. For this reason, all faculty staff members

are encouraged to enroll for the Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers and Trainer. This was first introduced 9 years ago. The majority of current staff members have successfully completed this course.

For the various curriculums, activities and programmes, teachers play a very important role in establishing and understanding and relationship based on trust with the students. Interaction between students is fundamental in a student’s life. Teachers are encouraged to teach children how to acquire information and use the information efficiently and to the children’s benefit.

Interactions accompanied by visual aids, help students comprehend and achieve their targets. Classroom interactions are encouraged to help assist the students’ development. Practical classes are taken for subjects that require them.

Teachers strive to maintain a proportionate teacher-student ratio giving abundant scope for individual discussion.

“Our team of experienced teachers is well trained to develop the full potential of a child and enhance their talents. In our pursuit of excellence and progress in education, we provide an experience of education, which combines broad ranges of cultural backgrounds found both on the island and in other parts of the world, incorporating the unity of basic values throughout the world” he says with pride.

“The international approach of the school, its modern era of technology, the balance between education and information, encouragement of creativity and innovation make studying fun, rewarding and fruitful.”

Opinion

ducation is an effective tool which transforms an individual into a contributory and socio-friendly citizen of the society.

Learning is a life-long process which brings changes in the behavioral pattern; as the system of learning affects the entire life, it should focus on developing scientific thinking, intellectual and communication abilities, and social responsibility.

It helps us to be independent, build character, instills discipline, and makes life meaningful. The school education immensely contributes in enhancing knowledge, skills, aptitude and lays a strong foundation for further growth. After the school education, students are put in a very complex situation where things look a little strange to them and they tend to develop a kind of inertia before they take the next step. Parents and teachers facilitate in grooming the students as successful professionals and citizens by providing proper guidance and support. Decisions on higher education have been difficult for students when parents impose their choice, rather than giving importance to the aspirations and interests of the students.

Higher education enhances intellectual growth, gives exposure to innovative ideas and stimulates thoughts and grooms students to be an independent thinker which is crucial to reach high levels of success in any field. It improves the quality of life as horizons of wisdom and knowledge expand. A right decision taken at this stage plays a vital role in their success, satisfaction and professional growth.

Knowledge exploration and knowledge management are matters of great concern for the younger generation. Every academic discipline has branched into micro level specialisations. When aptitude and interest are clearly assessed, the above concerns will turn to be advantageous. It will help to attain a deeper understanding of the micro level choice which will suit the aptitude and interest. In addition to this, the rapid pace of social,

economical and technological changes provide enormous opportunities; but with challenges, it opens new doors for an interesting life. Therefore, correct assessment of aptitude and interest will help the students to choose the right path to proceed further.

Students aspiring for higher education, at the initial stage, should prioritise the options based on their interests, aptitude and goals, and should decide the level of education they need to pursue. Taking standardised and

reliable aptitude tests will help in judging their aptitudes, interest and potential. Counseling and career guidance are encouraged. Students should make themselves fully aware of the scope, opportunities and future development of their choice before making the final decision. The only key to success is dedication and hard work.

Life is a wonderful gift given to all of us, but it is very short. We should live life worthy of it: make

it meaningful and interesting by contributing our might to the peace, harmony and growth of humanity. The prosperity of humanity definitely is a creation of combined effort by all of us.

MOE

We spoke to Mr Saeed Abbas Al Mandi, the SR Curriculum Specialist at the Ministry of Education regarding the current trend in Bahrain’s education sector.

1. What is the general education scenario in Bahrain?Considering that pre-school education is not official, Bahrain’s education currently consists of:

Basic EducationIt is divided into two levels:

I Primary Stage (6-12 years):This represents the first stage of the educational ladder. It is divided into two cycles;a. The first one consists of the first three grades (one to three) of primary education where the class teacher system is applied. In this system, a single teacher teaches all subjects.

b. The second cycle combines the upper three grades (four to six) and here, the subject teacher system is applied where a teacher is appointed for each subject.

II Intermediate stage (13-15 years):The intermediate level is the third and last cycle of basic education; that is grades seven to nine)

Secondary Education (16-18)This level of education complements the basic education stage. It is

a new phase that prepares the students to enter universities and higher institutes or directly join the labor market. It lasts three academic years which are divided into six semesters (3 levels).

2. While framing content for textbooks, how much importance is given for practical knowledge? Both theoretical and practical knowledge are a necessity for our education, but there are some subjects like science, physical education, and technical where more emphasis is given on practical knowledge.

3. What changes do you see in the education sector in the next five years? Preschool and virtual education

will be common in the next five years. The mission of the Ministry of

Education is to transform citizens

into skilled humans for socio-economic development of the country by ensuring equitable access to quality education focusing on combating illiteracy, promotion of science and technology, critical thinking and positive values. The major challenges will be

ensuring quality education and training throughout the system from preschool to higher education, ensuring that teachers and learners become fully proficient in all subjects. Improvement in the educational

quality through close integration of curriculum development, quality assurance and assessment, improved textbook, improving teaching and learning. Establishing equity throughout

all levels of education and training through specific interventions to raise performance and learners with special needs. Strengthening education in

science and technology to address the under-developed skills in all areas of science and technology and the limited resources in teaching institutions to support the teaching of quality education, and integrating ICT within all subject areas.

Bahrain Science Centre

Here are some inclusive FAQs about the Bahrain Science Centre.

What is a Science Centre? Globally, Science Centres and interactive museums have taken the lead in hands-on, inquiry-based learning. Science Centres are places where construction of meaning takes place, and scientific and technological advances are understood in their appropriate contexts.

How does a Science Centre differ from a museum? One of the main roles of a museum is to make, store, study and display collections of cultural and natural history objects. All their displays are designed from the outset to be educational and they are all available for interaction with the public.

poetryThe Mind Slide

‘’Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow.’’

- Khalil Gibran, The Prophet

Desperate in this labyrinthWith doors of a luminous tint

Passages structured out of shapeYet also designed for escape

The Darkness quickly hides the LightIts ignorance pervades his sightExpulsions of a damaged mindCorrupt images that will blind

And distance even more apart,The cause of all, his sleepless heart.

His chest like a guitar unstringed,Void of music that it can bring,In his mind’s labyrinth bound,

By ignorance of himself, crowned.Yet his heart still echoes in dreams,

Longs for them to finally meet. For it has many things to say,Of desires and feverish days.So it still suffers and bewails,

Of the day his strong mind was tailed,Before they could be introduced,Living strangers under one roof.

And now, escape from this prison

Heats to feverish obsessionAn escape a necessityRather than a delicacy

With many tainted reflectionsAnd ever so sweet seductions

Life, a game of snakes and lizardsHappiness unreal like wizards

A word inside is mirrored screamsThere is no more air left to breathe

Fearful eyes—Tongueless heart—Sealed soul!A speechless love that needs controlMaybe his parents have some blame,Of their all-grown child’s broken frame.

With his passion and deep feelingPasted firm beneath his foot’s heeling.

DIY Peter

You will need:ScissorsLiquid glueRibbonPearl Beads (or any beads of your choice)FeltThe Peter Pan collar pattern

Print out your pattern according to the desirable size. Trace the design on the felt (accordingly adjust measurements as per your requirement). Once you cut your pattern, you have

a scalloped pattern front. Grab your liquid glue and pearls and begin gluing the pearls to the edge of the pattern. Start your way from the outside and

work your way to the inside. After gluing the pearls on the

pattern, Cut two ribbons (they can be plain or patterned based on your likes) long enough to tie, about 10 inches. Then, glue the two ribbons to the

end of the felt. Let it dry for 24 hours before holding or wearing it. Once the necklace is dry, it can be

ounded in 1983, Nautica takes its name from the Latin word “Nauticus” for ship. Since one of mankind’s first accomplishments in exploring the world was to take to the seas, a spinnaker

logo was designed as a symbol of adventure, action and classicism. This logo eventually evolved into the J-Class boat logo now seen today. Nautica quickly established itself as a brand with a distinct sense of timelessness – clothes that were bold and fun, yet highly functional.

They have evolved from a collection of six men’s outerwear pieces to a leading global lifestyle brand with products ranging from men’s, women’s and children’s apparel and accessories to a complete home collection. It has become one of the most important American brands throughout the

world, a true leader in a range of lifestyle categories. To celebrate its 30th milestone anniversary, Nautica created the Newport collection honoring its American heritage and showcasing special items marked with the number 30.

The 30th anniversary Newport collection is classic Nautica, grounded in navy and white, with red in trimming and graphic detail, with performance-driven features that take function

to the next level. Sailing jackets are waterproof and have innovative emergency lighting in the hood; zip cable shawl cardigans have wind block liners and knit active full-zip hoodies are audio enhanced with headphone draw cords. Additionally, select items, such as a full-zip vest, a sail short, a

t-shirt, and cargo shorts are branded with the number 30 to highlight the anniversary and are available.

With the dedication and hard work from within the company, Nautica is continuing to grow and cultivate innovation, while still staying true to their heritage and commitment to the water. The 30th anniversary Newport collection reflects the true competitive spirit of Nautica as well as its authentic design and high quality craftsmanship.

Nautica began its international expansion in 1985 and is now available in 75 countries with more than 177 Nautica stores worldwide. Today the world of

Guide

Your Ultimate Interview Guide

PRESENTING YOURSELF Arrive early. Wear something smart that will

highlight your personality. Be prepared with some

conversation starters related to some news headlines. Make friends with your

surrounding environment. Warm up. To establish a good beginning, in

a conversation, express with hand gestures and facial expressions. Tell a memorable story about

yourself. Don’t wait until the end of a

conversation to exchange contact information.

It is very common to be nervous during interviews. If you allow yourself to feel nervous, you will do much better. Never be negative. Never talk for more than two minutes continuously.Turn your weakness into strengths. When you are asked a question, think before you answer. A pause before you answer is a trademark of a thoughtful person which is a necessity when working in an organisation.

DO’S AND DONT’S OF AN INTERVIEW Do not wait for the last minute to

find out where the interview location is. Locate the place beforehand so that you are on time the day of the interview. Do your research on what job you

will be interviewing for. Prepare and practise for the interview. Do dress up smartly and

appropriately for the interview. The first impression is the best impression. Do plan to arrive at least ten minutes

early. Late arrival is not an excuse.

Do greet the receptionist or assistant with respect. This is where you start making an effort to impress the interviewers. Do not chew gum during the

interview. Do fill out the job application neatly

and correctly. Do bring extra resumes for the

interview. Do not rely on the resume to sell

the interview. You play a major role in selling yourself to the interviewer. Do greet the interviewer with the

respective title. Do shake hands firmly. Do show enthusiasm in the position

of the company. Do make good eye contact. Do not use poor language while

giving an interview. Do not ever lie. Answer questions

truthfully. Do not answer questions with

a simple yes or no. Explain your answers and give examples wherever necessary. Do not answer cell phones during

an interview. Do show what you can do for the

company.

“Turn your weakness into strengths.”

“Do show enthusiasm in the position of the company.”

Studies from various countries have shown that science centers have influenced career choices amongst the youth. They also help increase creativity, positive attitudes toward science, development, communication skills, and reading readiness.

Run and managed by MTE Studios, the new Bahrain Science Centre is an educational facility that uses the best methods to raise awareness of science and technology in the minds of young people. They focus on promoting dialogue and

debate while learning, and on deriving explanations, rather than providing answers for important scientific discoveries and phenomena. They contribute to the social engagement across generations and cultures as well as provide the resources for lifelong learning.

The centre makes science fun and exciting so that school students are more likely to be receptive to formal science teaching in classrooms. They recognise that ‘smart play’ is one of the most effective ways learning for people of all ages. As part of creative knowledge, they regularly hold talks, science shows, workshops, debates and experiments.

They function with the motto “You are a rocket scientist; you just do not know it yet”. Their role is to reach beyond the provision of information into the development of understanding and wisdom. This wisdom brings about the changed mindsets and behaviours that lead to a more sustainable life style. Science centres therefore help people, and societies, to reach their full potential.

Healthy Lifestyle

| BC Higher Education Special | March 2013

New Term, New You Step up your health quotient with these tips.

EXERCISE The #1 way to boost your mojo Sitting through the long hours all day and spending evenings studying can almost make it difficult for a healthy lifestyle. Along with your daily dose of relaxation, exercise helps you relieve the stresses of schoolwork, conflicts, peer pressure and relationships. So, build your confidence and your health by taking advantage of your campus’s gym, walk instead of driving, join a sport, and conquer your fear of heights by hiking or trekking. Dance to your heart’s content; join a yoga group- they say it helps you find inner peace. Build variety into what you do if that’s what you enjoy. At the end of the day, build consistency for your activity program.

SLEEP The best stress busterStudents are known for pulling “all-nighters” before their papers, but they are not as effective as sleeping and letting your mind do the building up for the night. When you pull an all-nighter, your brain does not have a chance to take in and store what was learnt permanently. There may be times when sleepless nights are required, but as a general rule, very little productivity occurs after midnight. Getting

sufficient shut-eye can be difficult, but sleeping for at least six hours each night is necessary for staying healthy and excelling. Sleep improves your ability to retain information, keeps your metabolism working smoothly, and improves your mood. Organise your days to include plenty of time for naps and sleep, and avoid late-night study sessions.

FOOD A Stomach LoveGreasy pizza, burgers and fries every day sound easy and quick, but it is definitely not going to help you stay healthy. So, take the time to make and pack your own food.

Breakfast: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, if you are not in the habit of eating breakfast, get into it! Breakfast should be made around protein; scrambled eggs with cheese, whole grain toast and juice make a good combination. A whole grain cereal with milk, some fruit and some yogurt is another good one; try something new every day.

Fruits and vegetables: Your mother was right!! They really are full of vitamins and minerals, and are definitely good for you! You don’t have to like all vegetables, just like the ones your mother gives you. Fresh fruits make great snacks and are healthy too. They are loaded with nutrients that keep our body healthy.

WATER A necessityDrink lots of water! Water help keeps your brain sharp and eliminates toxins in your body, keeps you hydrated and leaves your skin clear and pimple free. Carry a bottle of water with you

wherever you go. It is necessary to drink at least two litres of water every day to stay fully hydrated.

Don’t procrastinate. Don’t let tiny problems grow

into big ones before doing anything about them. Don’t over-commit your time

and energy. Learn to live in today, rather

than yesterday or tomorrow. Learn to laugh.

FeatureWhat brought you to open RIA?My husband and I decided to start RIA Centre after our son was asked to leave a day care centre on his first day there, only because he was a special needs child. We opened this non-profit centre to cater to a social and emotional cause.

How has the journey been so far?It has been a wonderful experience with a lot of challenges. And I decided to accept the challenges head on, I trained; I learnt and became a special needs educator. We opened RIA in October 1999 with just seven kids. Today, with hard work, support and encouragement, we now have approximately 140 children in our care. Through this journey, there is one thing I have learnt. It is that when you are at your lowest, you realise that all you need is that one push or sign that keeps you going.

How easy is it to integrate special needs students into mainstream schools? It is a slow process. Initially, this integration was not encouraged. But now, with the growing awareness, the children have entered mainstream schools. One of the best ways is to admit them early in to the mainstream, so that they can adapt to each other.

How do you assess the programs of the students and how often is there communication with the parents? Each student has an individual, educational and social working

plan. With dedicated teachers working together with parents, a well planned learning path is made. We have regular PTA meetings. It is important to have regular communication with the parents.

What do you envision for these children? We encourage inclusive education. RIA has a long way to go, but at least we have turned a corner. We also encourage youngsters to volunteer and build love and friendship with these children. Spread the word; tell people the importance of having these loved ones in your life and express love to them. Like all children, they want friends to play with and to think about nothing else.

What gives you utmost joy at the end of the day?It would be the honour of working with these loving children.

They give you immense joy and make your life worthwhile. Come what may, they inspire you to enjoy the ride of life.

Top 10 DocumentariesDavid Philip Hollywood compiles a lists of our Favourite Documentaries: Learning, laughing and Crying.

Indie Game: The Movie (2012)Director: Lisanne Pajot/James SwirskyA unique insight into the world of independent computer game developers. The viewer rises and falls with their successes and failures. This is a very original piece of work.

Supersize Me (2004)Director: Morgan Spurlock. One month of eating McDonald’s exclusively. Many people might think it’s feasible, many might even think they would enjoy it. Think again. Watch as our subject suffers XL consequences.

Jackass (2002)Director: Jeff TremaineOn a lighter note. This is gross out humour at its best. Not for the ‘easily queasable’, but provides laugh after laugh.

March of the Penguins (2005)Director: Luc JaquetOscar winning nature documentary about the emperor penguins march to their breeding ground. There are penguins in it, so as you might imagine, there is lots of heartwarming footage of penguins falling about the place.

An Inconvenient Truth (2006)Director: Davis Gugenheim/Al GoreThe truth may be inconvenient but the film is undeniably compelling. Former US Vice-President Al Gore presents a well illustrated and dramatic assessment of the planet’s environment.

Documentaries

Senna (2010)Director: Asif KapadiaA film about Formula 1 and a Formula 1 driver. This piece of work transcends sport, it is a film for everyone. From start to finish it’s exciting, immersive and ultimately tragic. Senna is the highest grossing documentary in British history.

Man on Wire (2008)Director: James MarshA man tight rope walking from the top of one skyscraper to another? Yes please! Phillippe Petit’s insane journey across the twin towers was considered “The artistic crime of the century”.

Man with a Movie Camera (1929)Director: Dziga VertovIt’s an oldie but this is the pinnacle of cinema vérité. Quite simply, if you like creative movie making, you’ll love this.

Planet Earth (2006)Director: Alastair FothergillIf we make a list of great documentaries then no list would be complete without a David Attenborough title. This is seminal work in the documentation of our living planet. It is beautifully shot and Attenborough’s narration is spellbinding.

Roger and Me (1989)Director: Michael MooreMichael Moore went global from the success of his 2001 title ‘Bowling for Columbine’, but this is his first and arguably greatest work to date. Essentially this film is one man versus General Motors of America, a must see!

he seventh generation of Volkswagen’s iconic model has been completely redesigned, with new vehicle body,

interior, engines, entertainment systems, and driver assistance systems. The eye catching design adds dynamism and precision with enhanced quality and comfort. There is increased leg-room, 30 litres more boot capacity, as well as a multi collision brake system and proactive passenger protection system.

Like the first Golf, it defines horizontally balanced elements that create a certain width. It comes to life with its slightly upward sweeping headlights – a front section that is instantly recognisable in any rear view mirror as that of a Volkswagen. Compared to its predecessor, the new Golf displays completely restructured modulation of its surfaces. While on the Golf Mk6 the wings were higher than the bonnet, this is now the other way round.

Rear section scores visually and in detail. The new yet familiar

elements include clear geometry of the rear lights, the rear window stretching all the way to the C-pillars and the large homogenous surface around the Volkswagen badge. Even with all the great aesthetics,

the designers have succeeded in

reducing the

height of the boot sill to just 665 mm, being the standout figure in this entire market segment and another example of attention to perfection of details-a side benefit that makes itself felt.

With this spacious Golf comes a whole new series of driver assistance systems like, multi-collision braking as standard, the proactive driver and passenger protection system (including automatic tautening of seatbelts and closing of windows), the XDS transverse differential lock, also fitted as standard, ACC adaptive cruise control plus Front Assist inclusive of city emergency brake function, Lane Assist, fatigue detection, the latest generation of the Park Assist system and of the Dynamic Light Assist function (automated Xenon full beam). The independent Euro NCAP organisation gave the new Golf four innovation awards for its safety systems.

Whether it is driving to work or a weekend spin, the seventh genertion Volkswagen Golf provides an elegant experience with a 1.2 litre 105hp and 1.4 litre 140hp four-cylinder engines and a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox DSG.

With an incredible starting price of BD7,490 /- with three years/45,000km free service, three years roadside assist and five years extended warranty, unlimited mileage, it is a car that is hard to resist.
