CPISP

Crown Prince’s International Scholarship Program

stablished in 1999 by HRH the Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, this programme awards ten

scholarships on an annual basis to outstanding Bahraini students from both governmental and private secondary schools to study at top international universities. Since its inception, 126 of Bahrain’s brightest secondary school graduates

have been selected on merit to receive HRH the Crown Prince’s scholarships.

The CPISP currently supports 65 scholars, who include 15 students pursuing post-graduate

degrees, studying at top schools and universities in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, and Australia. The CPISP is different from other scholarship programs because the scholars can choose their own desired fields of specialization, as well as the university and country where they would like to pursue their degrees.

It is dedicated to supporting its scholars in achieving their aspirations, as their success contributes to Bahrain’s progress and development. CPISP scholars have dedicated themselves

to a diverse range of majors and degrees, which include engineering, law, management, international relations, political science, mathematics, finance, business, computer science,

economics, physiotherapy, biology, biomedical research, and environmental science.

Once scholars have completed their university degrees, they are free to follow their desired career paths and pursue employment opportunities either in Bahrain or in the global arena, where they receive international work experience and exposure. A total of 57 graduates have joined the workforce in Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, the UK, and the US.

In Bahrain, CPISP scholars have gained employment at various esteemed organizations, including the Court of the Crown Prince, Aluminum Bahrain (ALBA), Mumtalakat, Economic Development Board, Central Bank

of Bahrain, Bahrain Defense Force Hospital, Bahrain Airport Company, International Institute for Strategic Studies, Gulf Technics, and other private sector international institutions. Internationally, scholars have joined major corporations such as Merrill Lynch/Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Google, Viacom, Citigroup, AT Kearny, Price Waterhouse Cooper, BNP Paribas, and Deloitte Consulting.

ducation is an effective tool which transforms an individual into a contributory and socio-friendly citizen of the society.

Learning is a life-long process which brings changes in the behavioral pattern; as the system of learning affects the entire life, it should focus on developing scientific thinking, intellectual and communication abilities, and social responsibility.

It helps us to be independent, build character, instills discipline, and makes life meaningful. The school education immensely contributes in enhancing knowledge, skills, aptitude and lays a strong foundation for further growth. After the school education, students are put in a very complex situation where things look a little strange to them and they tend to develop a kind of inertia before they take the next step. Parents and teachers facilitate in grooming the students as successful professionals and citizens by providing proper guidance and support. Decisions on higher education have been difficult for students when parents impose their choice, rather than giving importance to the aspirations and interests of the students.

Higher education enhances intellectual growth, gives exposure to innovative ideas and stimulates thoughts and grooms students to be an independent thinker which is crucial to reach high levels of success in any field. It improves the quality of life as horizons of wisdom and knowledge expand. A right decision taken at this stage plays a vital role in their success, satisfaction and professional growth.

Knowledge exploration and knowledge management are matters of great concern for the younger generation. Every academic discipline has branched into micro level specialisations. When aptitude and interest are clearly assessed, the above concerns will turn to be advantageous. It will help to attain a deeper understanding of the micro level choice which will suit the aptitude and interest. In addition to this, the rapid pace of social,

economical and technological changes provide enormous opportunities; but with challenges, it opens new doors for an interesting life. Therefore, correct assessment of aptitude and interest will help the students to choose the right path to proceed further.

Students aspiring for higher education, at the initial stage, should prioritise the options based on their interests, aptitude and goals, and should decide the level of education they need to pursue. Taking standardised and

reliable aptitude tests will help in judging their aptitudes, interest and potential. Counseling and career guidance are encouraged. Students should make themselves fully aware of the scope, opportunities and future development of their choice before making the final decision. The only key to success is dedication and hard work.

Life is a wonderful gift given to all of us, but it is very short. We should live life worthy of it: make

it meaningful and interesting by contributing our might to the peace, harmony and growth of humanity. The prosperity of humanity definitely is a creation of combined effort by all of us.

of Performing Arts at the British School of Bahrain is putting on a production of “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein. West Side Story is a modern musical adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by William Shakespeare. One of the most powerful pieces of music theatre of all time, this show brings the Romeo and Juliet story into the modern day combining amazing song writing, dramatic harmonies, highly charged action and

emotional character interplay.Aspiring actors, singers

he Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) will be celebrating ten years of providing first

class education from its state-of-the-art campus in Busaiteen, Bahrain, next year. Founded in 2004, RCSI’s role is to provide healthcare education and world class training for students from Bahrain, the GCC Countries and beyond. With students from over 40 countries, student numbers are at an all-time high, with 1,186 currently undertaking courses in Medicine, Nursing and Postgraduate Studies and Research. The RCSI curriculum, examinations and supervision ensures the highest international standards.

The courses that they currently offer are:

Medical Commencement Programme It is a one year full-time programme which is designed to equip students with a greater knowledge of general science subjects, study skills, medical English and research skills.

Additionally, it aims to provide students with the appropriate knowledge to bridge the gap between second level education and that of a third level medical university. On successful completion of the Medical Commencement Programme students can progress to the Foundation Year of the Medical Programme.

School for MedicineThis 5/6 year full-time Medical Programme is open to school leavers and those who have undertaken an undergraduate degree in another discipline but now wish to pursue a career in medicine. The programme is designed to ensure students develop a balanced perspective of domiciliary, community and hospital care and

acquire a sound knowledge of the principles of both the science and the art of medicine. Students are also provided with comprehensive training through exposure to a variety of specialities,thus, enhancing career opportunities at home and abroad. The medical programme is bench marked against the World Federation

for Medical Education and is identical to that in RCSI Dublin.

Medical graduates are awarded the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of the Art of Obstetrics (MB,

BCh, and BAO) from both the National University of Ireland and RCSI Bahrain. In addition, they receive the Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (LRCSI) and the Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (LRCPI).

BSc in NursingBSc in Nursing is a four year full-time

degree programme, open to school leavers and graduates who have completed an undergraduate degree in another discipline and now wish to pursue a career in Nursing. Their programme aims to equip students with the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes required to become competent and caring nurses. They also provide a strong foundation for continued

personal and professional development.

BSc Nursing Bridging Programme The BSc Nursing Bridging Programme is delivered part-time over 18 months and is designed for registered nurses who have completed their education to Diploma level and wish to upgrade their qualification to a full BSc Degree. The programme provides an opportunity for nurses to undertake further education to enhance both personal and professional

development. It is open to registered nurses from a variety of clinical backgrounds including general hospital, psychiatric and community nursing.

MSc in NursingThe two year part-time postgraduate programme is suitable for nurses from all clinical backgrounds who hold a BSc in Nursing and wish to undertake further education to enhance both personal and professional development. The programme facilitates students to develop as reflective practitioners with the confidence and awareness necessary to identify, influence, implement and evaluate evidence-based health care. Students who exit the programme following successful completion of year 1 are awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Theory.

he Faculty of Art and Design at the Royal University for Women is home to some of the most exciting

academic programmes in the Kingdom of Bahrain, if not the Gulf region. Budding artists and designers join the faculty with aspirations of becoming the next big fashion designer, or being a specialist in creative graphic works or establishing themselves as a well-known interior designer.

The programmes and practices are designed to meet international standards with frequent visits from external examiners and regular semester visits to the fashion capitals of the world such as London, New York and Paris.

The faculty of Art and Design is offering Programmes at both undergraduate and post graduate levels. The faculty is to achieve the best for all the students.

TFashion Design – Courses offered in this popular specialisation include Fashion techniques, Fashion Illustration, Garment construction, Pattern making, Applied design and Catwalk presentation. Additionally, through links with the fashion industry, internships are offered to students to gain experience in the business and commerce aspect of the industry.

Graphic Design – The discipline that combines both art and technology to communicate with audiences is among the most sought after majors in the current job market. Graduates in graphic design study the art of typography, corporate identity, photography, motion graphics and 3D graphics.

Interior Design – The programme is designed to qualify RUW graduates to work as professional interior designers and to meet international standards and trends. Courses covered include Interior design illustration, history of interior design, construction and technology and computer drafting.

students are free to come and go as their timetables permit. We spoke to Mr Saeed Abbas Al Mandi, the SR Curriculum Specialist at the Ministry of Education regarding the current trend in Bahrain’s education sector.

1. What is the general education scenario in Bahrain?Considering that pre-school education is not official, Bahrain’s education currently consists of:

Basic EducationIt is divided into two levels:

I Primary Stage (6-12 years):This represents the first stage of the educational ladder. It is divided into two cycles;a. The first one consists of the first three grades (one to three) of primary education where the class teacher system is applied. In this system, a single teacher teaches all subjects.

b. The second cycle combines the upper three grades (four to six) and here, the subject teacher system is applied where a teacher is appointed for each subject.

II Intermediate stage (13-15 years):The intermediate level is the third and last cycle of basic education; that is grades seven to nine)

Secondary Education (16-18)This level of education complements the basic education stage. It is

a new phase that prepares the students to enter universities and higher institutes or directly join the labor market. It lasts three academic years which are divided into six semesters (3 levels).

2. While framing content for textbooks, how much importance is given for practical knowledge?Both theoretical and practical knowledge are a necessity for our education, but there are some subjects like science, physical education, and technical where more emphasis is given on practical knowledge.

3. What changes do you see in the education sector in the next five years? Preschool and virtual education

will be common in the next five years. The mission of the Ministry of

Education is to transform citizens

into skilled humans for socio-economic development of the country by ensuring equitable access to quality education focusing on combating illiteracy, promotion of science and technology, critical thinking and positive values. The major challenges will be

ensuring quality education and training throughout the system from preschool to higher education, ensuring that teachers and learners become fully proficient in all subjects. Improvement in the educational

quality through close integration of curriculum development, quality assurance and assessment, improved textbook, improving teaching and learning. Establishing equity throughout

all levels of education and training through specific interventions to raise performance and learners with special needs. Strengthening education in

science and technology to address the under-developed skills in all areas of science and technology and the limited resources in teaching institutions to support the teaching of quality education, and integrating ICT within all subject areas.

highlight your personality. Be prepared with some

conversation starters related to some news headlines. Make friends with your

surrounding environment. Warm up. To establish a good beginning, in

a conversation, express with hand gestures and facial expressions. Tell a memorable story about

yourself. Don’t wait until the end of a

conversation to exchange contact information.

It is very common to be nervous during interviews. If you allow yourself to feel nervous, you will do much better. Never be negative. Never talk for more than two minutes continuously.Turn your weakness into strengths. When you are asked a question, think before you answer. A pause before you answer is a trademark of a thoughtful person which is a necessity when working in an organisation.

DO’S AND DONT’S OF AN INTERVIEW Do not wait for the last minute to

find out where the interview location is. Locate the place beforehand so that you are on time the day of the interview. Do your research on what job you

will be interviewing for. Prepare and practise for the interview. Do dress up smartly and

appropriately for the interview. The first impression is the best impression. Do plan to arrive at least ten minutes

early. Late arrival is not an excuse.

Along with your daily dose of relaxation, exercise helps you relieve the stresses of schoolwork, conflicts, peer pressure and relationships. So, build your confidence and your health by taking advantage of your campus’s gym, walk instead of driving, join a sport, and conquer your fear of heights by hiking or trekking. Dance to your heart’s content; join a yoga group- they say it helps you find inner peace. Build variety into what you do if that’s what you enjoy. At the end of the day, build consistency for your activity program.

SLEEP The best stress busterStudents are known for pulling “all-nighters” before their papers, but they are not as effective as sleeping and letting your mind do the building up for the night. When you pull an all-nighter, your brain does not have a chance to take in and store what was learnt permanently. There may be times when sleepless nights are required, but as a general rule, very little productivity occurs after midnight. Getting

sufficient shut-eye can be difficult, but sleeping for at least six hours each night is necessary for staying healthy and excelling. Sleep improves your ability to retain information, keeps your metabolism working smoothly, and improves your mood. Organise your days to include plenty of time for naps and sleep, and avoid late-night study sessions.

FOOD A Stomach LoveGreasy pizza, burgers and fries every day sound easy and quick, but it is definitely not going to help you stay healthy. So, take the time to make and pack your own food.

Breakfast: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, if you are not in the habit of eating breakfast, get into it! Breakfast should be made around protein; scrambled eggs with cheese, whole grain toast and juice make a good combination. A whole grain cereal with milk, some fruit and some yogurt is another good one; try something new every day.

Fruits and vegetables: Your mother was right!! They really are full of vitamins and minerals, and are definitely good for you! You don’t have to like all vegetables, just like the ones your mother gives you. Fresh fruits make great snacks and are healthy too. They are loaded with nutrients that keep our body healthy.

WATER A necessityDrink lots of water! Water help keeps your brain sharp and eliminates toxins in your body, keeps you hydrated and leaves your skin clear and pimple free. Carry a bottle of water with you

wherever you go. It is necessary to drink at least two litres of water every day to stay fully hydrated.

Don’t procrastinate. Don’t let tiny problems grow

into big ones before doing anything about them. Don’t over-commit your time

and energy. Learn to live in today, rather

than yesterday or tomorrow. Learn to laugh.

Build Love and Friendship

FeatureWhat brought you to open RIA?My husband and I decided to start RIA Centre after our son was asked to leave a day care centre on his first day there, only because he was a special needs child. We opened this non-profit centre to cater to a social and emotional cause.

How has the journey been so far?It has been a wonderful experience with a lot of challenges. And I decided to accept the challenges head on, I trained; I learnt and became a special needs educator.We opened RIA in October 1999 with just seven kids. Today, with hard work, support and encouragement, we now have approximately 140 children in our care. Through this journey, there is one thing I have learnt. It is that when you are at your lowest, you realise that all you need is that one push or sign that keeps you going.

How easy is it to integrate special needs students into mainstream schools?It is a slow process. Initially, this integration was not encouraged. But now, with the growing awareness, the children have entered mainstream schools. One of the best ways is to admit them early in to the mainstream, so that they can adapt to each other.

How do you assess the programs of the students and how often is there communication with the parents?Each student has an individual, educational and social working

plan. With dedicated teachers working together with parents, a well planned learning path is made. We have regular PTA meetings. It is important to have regular communication with the parents.

What do you envision for these children?We encourage inclusive education. RIA has a long way to go, but at least we have turned a corner. We also encourage youngsters to volunteer and build love and friendship with these children. Spread the word; tell people the importance of having these loved ones in your life and express love to them. Like all children, they want friends to play with and to think about nothing else.

What gives you utmost joy at the end of the day?It would be the honour of working with these loving children.

They give you immense joy and make your life worthwhile. Come what may, they inspire you to enjoy the ride of life.
