The Open Self . The open self represents all the information, behaviors, attitudes, feelings, desires, motivations, ideas, and so on that you know about yourself and that others also

know. The information included here might vary from your name, skin color, and sex to your

age, political and religious affiliations, and job title. Your open self will vary in size depending

on the individuals with whom you are dealing. Some people probably make you prefer to leavemost of yourself closed.

The size of the open self also varies from person to person, some people tend to reveal

their innermost desires and feelings. Others prefer to remain silent about both significant andinsignificant details. Most of us, however, open ourselves to some people about some things at

some times.

“The smaller the first quadrant,” says Luft (1984), “the poorer the communication” .communication depends on the degree to which you open yourself to others and to yourself. If

don’t allow others to know you, communication becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible.

You can communicate meaningfully only when you know the other person, the other person

knows you, and you each know yourself. To improve communication, you have to work first onenlarging the open self.

A change in the open area –  or in any of the quadrants –  will bring about a change in the

other quadrants. Visualize the size of the entire window being constant, and the size of each pane

becomes smaller, one or more of the others must become larger. Similarly, as one pane becomeslarger, one or more of the others must become smaller. These several selves, then, are not

separate and distinct from each other. Rather, each depends on the others.

The Blind Self . The self represents information about yourself that others know but youdo not. This may vary from relatively insignificant habits  –  using the expression “you know,”

rubbing your nose when you get angry, or having a peculiar body odor  –   to something as

significant as defense mechanisms, fight strategies, or repressed experience. Some people have a very large blind self and seem ablivious to their own faults and

sometimes (though not as often) their own virtues. Others seem overly concerned with having a

blind self. They seek therapy at every turn and join every consciousness-raising group. Some

think they know everything about themselves –  that they have reduced the blind self to zero.Communication depends in great part on both parties having the same basic information

about the other. Where blind area exist, communication will be difficult. yet blind areas will

always exist for each of us. Although we may be able to shrink our blind areas, we can never

eliminate them.
