The British Agricultural and Garden Machinery Association (BAGMA), is the dealer trade organisation that was first established in 1917 as the National Association of Agricultural Engineers and Implement Dealers and has progressed through the last ninety or so years becoming BAGMA in 1972.

One of the main roles of BAGMA is to ensure that new people are drawn into the land based industry sector and that they have access to training and apprentice programmes to ensure that they are fully trained to meet the developing technology that our industry uses, enjoys and benefits from.

Working closely with industry stakeholders, the HSE, dealers, manufacturers and other training industry bodies such as Lantra Awards, the Institute of Motor Industries, City & Guilds, NFU, NPTC and others, BAGMA offers a wide range of industry related training courses for the benefit of its own members and others. BAGMA can deliver its training courses using its own trainers, Corporate Trainers, manufacturers’ or suppliers’ training staff and through BAGMA approved Training and Assessment Centres. BAGMA will train other companies’ staff to deliver BAGMA training courses where appropriate.

Course aimsBAGMA in conjunction with Coventry University has developed a Level 5 Diploma in Management from the Chartered Management Institute tailored for BAGMA members. The programme will draw upon your experiences and provide you with the leadership and management skills which are real and relevant to your work environment. Workshops are delivered at Coventry University Technology Park, Coventry.

The BAGMA Management Development FrameworkThe framework is made up of individual units taken from the Chartered Management Institute’s Management and Leadership (Level 5) programme. Each unit has a credit value which allows you to build up credits into national qualifications. The qualifications are:• Award in Management and Leadership - minimum of 6 credits• Certificate in Management and Leadership - minimum of 13 credits• Diploma in Management and Leadership - minimum of 62 creditsThe smallest unit in the Framework is made up of 6 credits which means that the successful completion of any one unit will provide you with an Award in Management and Leadership. Depending upon your professional development needs you can then build up your credit value to achieve either the Certificate or Diploma.

Course content & structureTo successfully complete any unit you will need to attend the workshops and submit assignments. All assignments will be work based and this means that anything learnt at the workshop can be applied to your work.

LOLER Thorough Examination of Machineryand Equipment for Serviceability

Course aimsTo provide technicians with practical guidance in the Thorough Examination of Lifting Machines and Equipment Under Regulation (9) of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER 98) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98) relevant legislation and areas of responsibility.

ObjectivesCandidates will gain an understanding of all aspects of the Thorough Examination procedures and related legislation and will be able to conduct Thorough Examinations and complete the required report and risk assessment forms.

Candidates will be continually assessed to meet the requirements of the scheme through the BAGMA/CFTS accreditation process.

PUWER Thorough Examination of Machineryand Equipment for Serviceability

Course aimsTo provide technicians with practical guidance in the Thorough Examination of Mobile Work Equipment Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98) and the relevant legislation and areas of responsibility.

ObjectivesCandidates will gain an understanding of all aspects of the Thorough Examination procedures and related legislation and will be able to conduct Thorough Examinations and complete the required report and risk assessment forms. Candidates will be continually assessed to meet the requirements of the scheme through BAGMA GN100-2005 and the BAGMA accreditation process.

The course has both practical and theoretical sessions; the practical work will be carried out on a tractor, professional mower or hand held power equipment.1. Relevant Health and Safety legislation, regulations and

safe working practices and procedures and the Health and Safety implications of the Thorough Examinations Scheme

Operator Training

Course aimsThe aim of the course is to provide operators, both new and experienced, with an insight into safety awareness and risk assessment in order to reduce the likelihood of an accident occurring. Operator training is a legal requirement.

The course has both practical and theoretical sessions, the practical work will be carried out on the equipment and modules selected. • Identify the risks associated with the use of Ride-on/Pedestrian mowers• Select appropriate Personal Protective Equipment

(PPE)• Identify and understand the function of all

instruments & controls• Carry out daily checks as indicated in the

operators manual

• Carry out pre-start checks• Identify and report any faults• Operate the machine in a safe and competent

manner• Perform after-use maintenance• Understand legal and practical requirements for

travelling on a public road• Load and transport the machines safely (if appropriate)

Duration: 1-5 days

A/C Servicing & Refrigerant Handling Assessment

Course aimsTo give attendees the technical and practical knowledge required to ensure competence whilst handling refrigerant and servicing on Mobile Air Conditioning systems (MAC).

This course is designed to cover safe recovery & refilling of MAC systems, requirements of Commission Regulation 307/2008, EC Regulation 842/2006 on certain fluorinated greenhouse gases (the F gas Regulation).

Course certificationThe performance of each student is monitored throughout the course, with a practical/multi-choice theory assessment on the last day as set by City & Guilds.

Providing the student reaches the required standard acertificate will be awarded for:• City & Guilds 7543 Certificate in Mobile AirConditioning Systems:001 – Refrigerant Handling for Mobile A/C Systems002 – Basic Mobile Air Conditioning principals (Testing and Servicing Mobile A/C Systems)

Who should attend?The two day course is designed for technicians, new to MAC systems. One day courses are for experienced technicians within the agricultural dealer network and who need to be trained and assessed to meet new EC regulations on refrigerant handling of certain fluorinated gases.

The courses have both practical and theoretical sessions;the practical work will be carried out on a MACsystem; either a tractor or car depending on customerrequirements1 day course:• Introduction to air conditioning• Operation of air conditioning system• Basic processes• HFC 134a properties and environmental impact• Common recovery procedures for FGG• Overview of key skills• Regulations & legislation, service equipment and service procedures, including practical City & Guilds assessment• Refrigerant Handling

Course aimsTo provide dealer staff with practical guidance in the relevant legislation, areas of responsibility, methods, recording, reports for Installation of products and services. Delegates will be continually assessed for accreditation under the BAGMA Installation scheme developed in conjunction with the Health & Safety Executive.

ObjectivesThe course has both practical and theoretical sessions; the practical work will be carried out on a tractor, professional mower or hand held power equipment. Course content will cover a number of aspects including:1. Health and Safety legislation and procedures2. How to carry out site specific risk assessments 3. All aspects of the Installation process 4. How to carry out an installation using a systematic process 5. The importance of the operator’s handbook to accompany each machine

Who should attend?This course is aimed at those from a relevant machinery/sales background with several years’ experience of agricultural/horticultural machinery/equipment, intending to carry out Installation and familiarisation of new, second hand or hire machinery/equipment within that company or organisation.


Duration: 1 day

The course has both practical and theoretical sessions; the practical work will be carried out on a tractor, professional mower or hand held power equipment. Course content will cover a number of aspects including:

1. Health and Safety legislation and procedures

2. How to carry out site specific risk assessments

3. All aspects of the Installation process

4. How to carry out an installation using a systematic process

5. The importance of the operator’s handbook to accompany each machine

Brake Performance Testing of Mobile Work Equipment for Serviceability (Air & Hydraulic System)

Course aimsTo provide technicians with practical guidance in the brake Performance Testing of Mobile Work Equipment and Agricultural Trailers (air and hydraulic braking systems), Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98) Regulation 6(2) and the relevant legislation, areas of responsibility, brake performance testing procedures, methods, recording, and reports.

Who should attend?This course is aimed at those from a relevant engineering background with several years’ experience of agricultural, horticultural/plant machinery, intending to be nominated by a company or organisation as a competent person to carry out brake performance testing of Mobile Work Equipment, Agricultural Trailers and Plant Equipment within that company or organisation.

BAGMA approved trainersBAGMA provides training courses for dealer staff in several different areas to recognised standards. Qualifying candidates will be provided with a BAGMA certificate on successful completion of training and a photo ID card with details of their training qualification. BAGMA hold a register of trained dealer staff and the companies they work for.

BAGMA corporate instructors offer a wide range of quality training programmes, ensuring that mowing equipment, tractors and ATVs are being used correctly and safely.

Many courses offered provide a training assessment, and candidates and employers can achieve standards that meet the requirements and legal obligations of the Heath and Safety at Work Act.

ApprenticeshipsBAGMA works with industry partners, colleges and other training providers to encourage apprentices to join industry and to support them and the various training establishments that provide apprentice training through work based and centre based programmes in the agricultural, ground care and garden machinery industry.
