A vivid poster in British Empire triumphant style dominated by a virile angel astride gargoyles, classical sculptures, the harbour and outline of the city, the last including two Opera Houses. 7. BRISBANE. The Demolition Show! Original poster for the exhibition at “The Observatory”, 92-102 Little Roma Street from 10th-31st March 1986 to draw attention to the above development. The demolition was a success, the communications tower wasn’t, the space went the traditional Australian way of first a hole in the ground, then a car park and is now occupied by the Queensland Supreme Court and Magistrate’s Court buildings. Poster contains photographs of buildings and facades to go, details of the exhibition schedule and, on the reverse, “What is a Criminal?” or photographs of Queensland politicians and businessmen, captioned rhetorically, and a summary of the provisions possible by the State Government under the proposed Drugs Misuse Bill. Poster measures 38.5 x 29cms., remnants of small stain on middle right edge. Creased. Very good. $350.00

20. FORBES, JOHN. “Scottische”. Nine drafts of the poem, though one draft is noted as “3 ”, of this late poem which moves between melancholy and bathos. Titled originally “If pain persists, see a doctor”, then “The Break”, “Bagpipe Music”, “Bagpipe Music (a soap opera)”, back to “Bagpipe Music”, “Scottoche” and the final “Scottische” for the last four drafts. Each draft is typed with handwritten changes, alternative versions, some sections typexed out, and some handwritten pages of fragments, notes, phrases and tinkering with lines; 18pp. total. Written between 12th June and 1st July 1995, first published in Southerly, Vol.55, No.4, 1995, included in Collected Poems, 1970-1998, Rose Bay, Brandl and Schlesinger [2001]. The final draft here is identical to the version in the Collected except, “Where the face in the mirror / imitates pain” has become “Where the face in the mirror / mimics pain”. 25. GREEN BANS. Not Wanted in Victoria Street or Anywhere Theemans’s Scabs. [Potts Point] Victoria Street Residents Action Group and the Builders Labourers Federation [c.1973]. Original poster issued during the conflict between residents of Victoria Street, Potts Point, the Builders Labourers Federation and Frank Theeman, property developer. The poster features 25 mostly head and shoulder portraits of individuals working for Theeman. The most prominent, centre of the poster, is Joe Meissner. Poster measures 57 x 44cms. Creased, a couple of nicks at edges. Very good. $500.00

26. HEIDELBERG. The Lest We Forget Cookery Book – Taste of Life Recipes from Darley House Community. Heidelberg Heights, Vic: Snap Printing Heidelberg, nd [c.2000]. Combination of recipes, anecdotes, memories and jokes put together by the staff, residents and their families of a nursing home in Heidelberg; illustrated, 36pp. Pictorial wrappers. Comb bound. 27. (HEWETT, DOROTHY.) Pandora’s Cross by Dorothy Hewett. Programme for the first of two productions by the Paris Company, July 1978. The Old Tote had expired, the Sydney Theatre Company was not yet born, the Walter Burley Griffin designed building was still standing at 205 Liverpool Street and, after years as a cinema, returned to live theatre. Visions by Louis Nowra followed, A Cheery Soul by Patrick White was planned but the company folded after two productions. Single sheet measuring 50 x 36cms., printed both sides, and folded twice to make the programme. Cover illustration and company logo by Martin Sharp. Fine. $35.00

28. HIV/AIDS. Red Ribbon Day – Like Liz, you can buy a red ribbon on Wednesday to help support people with HIV/AIDS. No publication details. Original poster produced for 1st December 1993, annual World AIDS day. Poster features Elizabeth Taylor, in a scene from Butterfield 8, above her quotation, “I don’t think George Bush is doing anything about AIDS ... I don’t think he even knows how to spell AIDS.” Poster measures 58 x 44cms. A couple of pinholes, remnants of marks on reverse, else fine. $75.00

29. (HOGG, BOB.) The Definitive Bobhoggraphy. Two original posters produced for Bob Hogg’s farewell party from his last position as National Secretary of the Australian Labour Party (1993). Hogg had a long career in the Labour Party including stints as secretary of the Victorian Branch (1976-1978), consultant to John Cain (1986-1987) and senior adviser to Bob Hawke (1983-1986). The two posters follow the same design: a collage of newspaper clippings and documents framed by images of Hogg at different stages of his life. Posters both measure 75 x 50cms. each. A couple of nicks at edges and vol.2 has a small abrasion lower right of image without any loss of detail, else both fine. The two posters $100.00

Printed envelope which sets out the circuitous journey, ingredients, and steps in production, before the net settles, unobtrusively on a woman’s head: made in China, examined and packed in London, produced “expressly” for David Jones, uses human hair, and fully sterilized. Colour, batch no. also noted and the net included in the envelope. All fine. $35.00

33. (KELLY, NED.) Ned Kelly, directed by Tony Richardson (1970). Original German poster for Kelly der Bandit [opened in West Germany 1970]. A full length image of Mick Jagger pushes the usual element of Kelly’s armour to the background of the design. The poster promotes Mick Jagger and Tony Richardson – star and director – and ignores any Australian context. Poster measures 84 x 59cms. Folded. Fine. PIKE AND COOPER #379. $300.00

35. (LAWLER, RAY.) Summer of the Seventeenth Doll by Ray Lawler. Program for the second Sydney production at the Elizabethan Theatre, Newtown which premiered on the 11th February 1957. This production and cast, including Richard Pratt as Johnnie Dowd, took the play to Edinburgh, Nottingham, London and New York; 27pp. Printed wrappers, stapled. Very good. $35.00

39. (MELBA, DAME NELLIE.) Melba, directed by Lewis Milestone (1953). Original English trade poster for Melba [opened in the United Kingdom December 1953]. Hollywood biopic of Dame Nellie Melba stressing costumes, romance, production values, and not constrained by the events of Melba’s life or the dress of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Poster originally appeared in Kinematograph Weekly, a trade publication available by subscription to cinema managers Poster measures 28 x 43cms. One vertical fold. Fine. $150.00

40. (MILLER, ARTHUR.) Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller. Program for the first Australian production listed on ausstage, at the Independent Theatre, North Sydney and which premiered on 11th June 1953, four and a half years after the first American performance. Frank Waters as Willy Loman, thirteen other actors, including John Meillon as Happy, Loman’s younger son. Printed wrappers, stapled. Very good. $35.00

41. (MILLER, ARTHUR.) The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Program for the Old Tote production, featuring John Gaden as John Proctor, Robyn Nevin as Abigail Williams, and which premiered on 26th June 1971. Pictorial wrappers, stapled. Near fine. $35.00

Mt. Rushmore type imagery of the four accused combined with as many endorsements as possible and the above caption. Poster measures 104 x 69cms. Folded. Fine. $300.00

Music and lyrics to 20 songs including ”Dole Days”, “Please Prime Minister!”, “Forest Song”, “Mangoes in the Moonlight” and “Marijuana Mexicana”; photographs and short biographies of the composers. The official documentary record of the Melbourne Olympics; official because the exclusive rights were sold to the C.S.A., a French production company. Poster measures 69 x 32cms. Details of a screening in Hagfors, southern Sweden, stamped onto the bottom of the poster. A couple of pinholes, else very good. $500.00

45. PALAIS DE DANSE, ST KILDA. Movie Ball, 1937. Programme, compiled by Eric E. Wahlquist, for the ball held on Wednesday 13th October, 1937. The second ball to be held by the Victorian Cinema Industry Benevolent Fund, formed the previous year at the ball held at Melbourne Town Hall. Elaborate programme (text pages measure 32 x 51cms., outer wrappers or covers 34 x 55cms.), containing colour reproductions of posters for movies and sepia photographs of stars on rectos and a wide range of local advertisements and caricatures of personalities likely to be encountered at the ball. Order of events for the evening, proceeds directed to the Fund, office holders and committee members. Entry: 12/6, movie ball and pageant, prizes to the value of £100 awarded for male and female impersonations of movie stars as well as for movie sets and other tableaux; 26pp. Oblong folio. 47. PRINCE EDWARD THEATRE. The Beloved Rogue (c.1927-1928). Exhibitor’s campaign book for this late silent movie, a biopic of François Villon featuring John Barrymore as the 15th century French poet. Details of posters and other promotional merchandise available from the distributor, up to and including signed photographs of Barrymore, as well as more general marketing tips and copies of reviews and promotional articles from the United States; c.20pp. Printed envelope measuring 24.5 x 32cms., addressed to Mel G. Lawton [general manager of the Prince Edward], Prince Edward Theatre, Sydney without bothering with the 26-32 Castlereagh Street detail. 76. YOUNG AUSTRALIA LEAGUE. Typed letter, signed by J.J. [Jack] Simons, written from Antioch, [California] on the 22 January 1912. A generic thank you letter from the co-founder of the League for hospitality extended to members on a tour to America. Founded in 1905 as the Young Australia Football League with the aim of organising tours for Western Australian footballers to promote Australian Rules football. The league changed its name in 1910 and widened its range to include literature, music, performance, hiking and camping and then international tours to promote their version of nationalism under the banner of “Education by Travel” and with aim of becoming the largest boys’ club in the British Empire. Single foolscap sheet, folded. Written on League letterhead with extensive information – tours, office bearers, departments, branch divisions, individuals involved, the current 30,000 mile tour – down the left hand side of sheet.
