Wer setzt Bacula ein?

10

Bacula Terminology

• Job Bacula “Unit” E.g: backup, restore, console

• Client A computer to back up E.g: server, desktop, laptop

• Volume Storage elementary component E.g.:Tape or file on disk

• Pool To aggregate “same” kind of volumes E.g.: All volumes with retention of 2 weeks

11

Bacula Communications

• Getting more friendly to distributed environments SAN shared storage Modified communications directions More flexibility for backing up to different locations

12

Director (DIR)

• Features Conductor Job's launch Meta-data to Catalog Thousands clients

• Advantages : Network based Centralized management Auto-scheduling May be launched by:

• Schedulers• Scripts

Configuration is done by text editing and copy / paste or via BWeb Management Suite (Web based interface)

13

File daemon (FD)

• Features « Agent » Minimal configuration Send data to SD on backup Receive data from SD on

restore

• Advantages Easy to install Nearly no management May run scripts before / after

backup

• Must Be installed on each computer

to back up Have access to all files

14

Storage daemon (SD)

• Features Connected to devices

• Support Disks Libraries & Tapes VTLs

• Advantages Multiple devices on same

storage server Multiple storage servers Encryption between FD and SD

15

Consoles: BWeb Management Suite

• Web Interface• User / Group management• Media Management• Backup / Restore

management• Reporting

• Advantages No installation on client For all business sizes Multiple directors Graphical views Media localization LDAP / AD integration Configuration and deployment

16

Consoles: Bacula Administration Tool (BAT)

• Graphical User Interface• Backup and restore

management• Media management

• Advantages Multiple directors « Click and play » High security level

• Must Be installed on each Bacula

admin workstation

17

Catalog

• PostgreSQL All infrastructures

• MySQL SMB

• SQLite Tests only

• Contains meta-data• System « history »

What files When were they backed up Where are they stored

• Advantages Scalable Reliable Easy Reporting (BMS, Business

Object, Pentaho, etc.)

18

Bacula Enterprise Edition 6

Many features including: Job bandwidth limitation on client Safe pruning algorithm, does not prune any job needed to restore data

(affects auto prune and prune jobs). LZO compression QT4 tray monitor for Windows/Linux clients Restart failed jobs from failure point Stop & Resume Jobs Storage-side Deduplication REST API And more...

19

Plugins

• VSS Exchange (Incremental back up and restore at mailbox database level)

• Single-item restore in a way supported by MS MSSQL (Differential back up and restore at database level) @SYSTEMSTATE Active Directory 10 more Windows components

• Windows BMR Windows Crash recovery

• Linux BMR Linux Crash recovery

• NDMP (for NAS/SAN back up and restore) Filer to server mode

20

Plugins

• Delta Major space/time savings for backing up large files like Outlook PST,

Database datafile, VirtualBox/VmWare images using block level analysis Allows for incremental backups of these files Does not obviate need for putting data files in a settled state before

backup

• SAN Shared Storage SPC-3 based SAN tape locking Multiple storage daemons can share a single tape device or autoloader

over SAN Allows for LAN-free backup Potential use between datacenters for DR/offsite backups (if a shared

SAN is possible)

21

Plugins

• VMware Integration into VMware to allow backups/restores of Virtual machines

without extra scripting Full backup at raw level Incremental using VMware block tracking Recovery on new host Handles NBD/SAN disks Handles Sparse disks

• Oracle• PostgreSQL• Incremental Accelerator for NetApp

22

Future plans: To be released

• SD → SD copy / migration• KVM plugin• Global client-side deduplication• User activity auditing capabilities

23

Future plans: Under evaluation

• SD redesign for improvement• Archival features• Write simultaneously to multiple devices• Write simultaneously to multiple SD• Automatic switch to another device• Additional Modules (plugins or scripts)

Amazon S3 support Continuous Data Protection (CDP) Google Cloud Storage support VSS MS-SQL plugin improvement

• NDMP direct filer-to-tape

24

BWeb Management Suite

Main Configuration Window

Client Config

25

Bweb Management Suite: Wizard

26

ZFS support

• ACLs fully supported on Solaris• Lower-level attributes not specifically handled (FS configuration,

not file contents)• Could be retrieved, backed up and applied at restore time by

customized script

27

Incremental Accelerator for NetApp

28

Encrypting Data

• Client-side data encryption Requires key & certificate on client (security!) Backup admin needs not be able to decrypt backed up data Master key to decrypt if client key lost can be used Noticeable CPU load while de-/encrypting

• Transport TLS, using x509 infrastructure Authentication by certificate can be done

• Storage data encryption Out of scope for Bacula Encrypted file system, native LTO encryption

29

Training

• Current Course Offerings Bacula Advanced Course:

Admin I Bacula Expert Course: Admin II

• Classroom Training Regularly in Europe and the US

• Onsite Training Cost effective for larger

development teams Reduce travel and disruption

30

Kurz zusammengefasst

• Wachsendes Unternehmen in wachsendem Markt• Gute Referenzen in Unternehmen und MSPs • Zuverlässige, robuste Lösung mit vollem Funktionsumfang• Professioneller Support• Preismodell unabhängig von Datenvolumen und Anzahl

CPUs/Sockets• Open Source wichtiges Element in Corporate IT• Kein “vendor lock-in”• Schweizer Unternehmen
