Chemical Makeup of Stains

• Benzene = organic compound• Chromophore = color• Auxochrome = ionization properties

• Benzene + Chromophore = Chromogen– Chromogen is a colored compound only

• Auxochrome with Chromogen allows the dye to form salt compounds that adhere to cells.
