Backstage: what is it about?

Backstage is based on international film and music festivals. The students research the festival world and then use the target language creatively for a real purpose: they develop the language to promote, organise and star in their own festival, followed by a celebrity Awards ceremony, plus perform live at a local event.

speaking focus for year groups 5 to 9• Linked up with a local TV and film company who mentored

a Year 9 focus group and produced footage of the project.• Made the primary to middle school transition day a focus

day for the speaking project• Introduced a competition for the best speaking project – to

The ideas and activities

• Years 5 & 6 created a new drama based on an adaptation of “La Chenille qui fait les trous”.

• Year 7 worked on advertising campaigns based on imaginary products.

• Year 8 produced film trailers – they had to create storyboards and pitch their ideas to an audience. Year 9 language and media students filmed them.

• Year 8 also worked on celebrity fashion and created fashion shows – Year 9 language leaders assisted them with their project.

• Year 9 worked on media, film and festivals with a focus on being backstage at the festival: interviews with performers and

celebrities, reviews, advertising and promotion.

Embedding questions

Embed questions and “how to ask questions” into SOWGet into a routine - focus starter activities for first lesson in the week around questions

Use plenty of visuals (we used film and festival picture stimulus but ideas suitable for any topic)

•Use photos – centre questions around photo as in new GCSE•Find a photo to display – give a load of answers – get students to guess the questions•Put some photos / pictures on display – get students to think of suitable questions for the pictures•Display pictures and questions – get students to match the questions to the picture

They have to act – if they have the card “triste” they have to ask the question in a sad way – the rest of the class have to guess what the adjective is.

Guess the film star

• Greet student at the door and give them a card with the name of a film star on it. Tell them not to show their card to anyone. The card also lists the films the actor / actress has starred in and their nationality and age. The rest of the class have to ask questions in order to identify the film star.

With this activity students can research and prepare the cards.
